I have had luck with D30 hubs by dousing them in penetrating oil and then banging a cold chisel on the side of the triangle mounting plate. it rotates inside the knuckle and then twists out. It is usually the same amount of fight, but the bearing is still good at the end. I have wrestled with more D30 hubs, knuckles, and axles than I care to remember. Another solid video for sure!!

Thank you! It's my fault for rushing the job... I should've used penetrating oil and waited... That being said... I worked the edges with a chisel and even used an extension as a punch to hit the broken bolt from behind... No dice. I hate hubs. Lol!

Use the hydraulic power from the power steering pump. Just did it yesterday on a northeast xj. Super easy. After hub bolts are removed. Thread on of the bolts part way in. Put a socket on the bolt head so it hits the axle housing when the wheel is turned. It one of the best tricks I have learned.

So i spent 90$ on a hub removal tool after i did the hub on the passengers side of my jeep, money well spent . The drivers side was much easier. These jeeps are not awful to work on but they require some brute force tools to do the job

2/3 LOL! Cool trick I learned when I brought my XJ to my buddies to swap the front end... once you get all the hbu bolts out thread em back in a bit and just whack the hub off from behind. Worked like a charm on my Northeast Dana 30's. Felt like a genuine fool after having spent so much time whacking (and like you said likely damaging) the hub. Maybe you can try it out on beach jeep. Thanks for breaking up the work day dan!

@@ProjectDanH Ha! Glad to hear. You got me thinking whether or not there's enough room to swing a hammer with all the linkage in place. As I'm sure you can attest now, it might even be worth knocking off a TRE temporarily. Was this axle on a Jeep?

This is how I ended up getting my NE XJ hub off. Turning the steering wheel left and right gives you plenty of room with a 2 pound hammer and I put my 12 pnt 13mm socket on the bolt to protect the bolt head. Put on new hub after cleaning up the knuckle opening and greasing it so it will come off easier when I replace the seals next year.

@@ProjectDanH Since Michigan sits on gigantic salt mines, this Jeep is gonna sit this winter out so I can pull the carpeting up and check the insides of the floorpans and rockers. The bottom is clean so I'd rather be safe first. Oh yeah, I was gonna mention this. The 2nd owner removed some of the front clip so he could pull the engine & trans out the front. The motor so far looks rebuilt but I'm waiting to hear from him if he did anything to the trans or transfer case. If not, I may just look for a used trans and rebuild it and tuck it into the garage. We'll see. Thanks again Dan for the video's & reply...

I did these years ago on my MJ which was less then 10 yrs old at the time, separated the hubs with a sharpened Stanley wonder bar and it didn't even damage the brake cover, fast forward to yesterday when I did the same job on a 20 yr old XJ, garage floor covered in rust and penetrating oil, and I needed a much bigger hammer and had to resharpen the wonder bar twice. The brake cover is almost the same shape as when I started...

I replaced the u-joints on both sides of my xj last summer and I ran into a similar problem with the hubs being stuck on. My afternoon project turned into a 4 day job because I had to wait for new hubs to come in the mail. Needless to say, A LOT of anti-seize was applied to any contact point on both of the new hubs so the next time I have to take them off it's nice and easy.

Hey man I got a little known secret for ya.next time instead of sledge hammering your hub for removal simply replace 2 of the 3 12 point bolts but only thread them in part way ,put a socket bit on one and with a regular size hammer begin hitting while alternating from one side to the other.this will save your hub and your money.

Still feeling em. Bought a new Joint and a hub. The hub is gross but no play. I was able to get the hub off fairly easily by screwing the fasteners back in a smidge and getting at them with the ball hammer. Really wasn’t bad getting the hub out. I never had that easy of a time actually. Now 2 of four clips out of the joint. I’ll be riding my bike to work tonight! 😂 Edit: we’ll it’s all done. Got the last clips finally. Took the high road and went to my welders shop and used his press to get the joint caps out. It made quick work without the hour of bashing I expected. Got it all back together and… while that’s a lot of piece of mind I’m still feeling some weirdness in the wheel at low speed turning.
