Everytime I need to replace something on my 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee 6L 4.0, I like watching videos first to learn something and to get myself into the right frame of mind for the job at hand. Today, I’m going to replace the thermostat and lower rad hose after it overheated a few days as the wife was driving home from work and luckily it happen in the drive thru at Jack in the Box and was able to park it right away. Got a check engine light over a week ago that the engine was running too cold, which is laughable here in Hawaii. Wife shot a quick video on her iPhone showing me that the water was boiling inside the reserve bottle. I’m thinking the thermostat was stuck in the open position, which is almost the same as not having one at all. Replaced the water pump about 6 months ago, so I am hoping its just a slight leak in the lower rad hose, if not, will need to replace the water pump again. Great video on the thermostat replacement, especially using the box wrench as a guide for the lower bolt. Wish me luck!

Aloha Dan, well, I still haven’t done the thermostat yet and discovered a few new details. The overheating problem is being caused by a number of factors. First, I discovered that my three year old radiator has a small leak at the bottom corner and the electric fan doesn’t come on, which probably lead to the small leak of the radiator in the first place. Plus the intake hose for the heater coils has a bit of swelling where it clamps to the thermostat housing but can fix that easy by trimming off one inch and reconnecting the hose when I replace the thermostat. Even though I did my best to flush the engine and radiator six months ago when I replace the water pump, I did not flush out the heater core because we never use the heater here in Hawaii, lol! So I will test the electric fan and the fuses to see what the issue is there. Worst case scenario, I’ll need to replace the radiator with my stimulus check I just got last week, what get timing, lol!

I bought a 2000 XJ with a 4.0, and the previous owner used a shop that doubled down on coolant stop leak. Just replace the leaking parts, freeze plugs in my case. Needless to say I had a job ahead of me. Used a chemical flush, but first blasted water through my system about 3 times (brown water each time). It's a good idea to flush your heater core both directions to remove any blockage. After the chemical flush, I flushed with water 3 times (brown water again). Refilled with coolant and it's still green a year later. The reason it was being sold was it didn't heat up for the winter. I know the irony

Just a thought for you on your 70/30 mix for the coolant to handle more extreme temperatures - yes it may handle colder temperatures a little better with a 70/30 mix but 60/40 is plenty unless you are going saab's 30 degree weather. I believe there's even a short what shows full viscosity as well as coolant ratios for extreme colds. I would never go more than 60 40 in my opinion though as water actually runs cooler than antifreeze. It gets around 0 degrees where I live sometimes a few degrees colder and I usually do about a 55-45 mix water to coolant possibly even 6040 because like I said water runs cooler than antifreeze. You just need enough antifreeze that it will not expand in your block and cause some serious problems. so go ahead and spend a dollar extra and buy Pennzoil instead of store-brand and you got the proper thermostat so you're good to go. This is how we used to have our race cars run as cool as possible as well as our trail trucks, which were used during hunting season when it gets damn cold. Just someone from the other side of the tracks brother. Now I got done with the entire process, at the end running the vehicle with the heater on, added coolant as necessary about 10 minutes in and my radiator just erupts like a volcano coolant everywhere. lost about half my Reservoir, who knows how much out of my radiator. Was keeping an eye on the temperature from the dash. it held a steady just a little above the middle on the cold n hot. on the temperature looked about right, read little under 200 right about what’s the thermostat is 195 ish.... why the hell did this happen? somebody please help..
@ProjectDanH3 жыл бұрын
perhaps you have air trapped in the system. You must park on an incline engine up. don't cap it yet. fill the radiator and reservoir cold then start the jeep. when it heats up the thermostat will open letting coolant in. At this point you will need to add coolant. you can squeeze and massage the upper and lower rad hose to try and work out any bubble. Keep filling until she wont drink anymore, then cap it up and shut her down. That should do the trick.
@maniacalmonster22933 жыл бұрын
@@ProjectDanH Thank you for the response but the problem was just that...... The thermostat. I replaced the thermostat along with the process and the new thermostat was a newer make and model did not have the pressurised little hole in it. finally narrowed it down to it had to be that, so I just reinstalled the original thermostat that was in it before that had the hole, problem solved. Now I’m fighting and even worse problem... my shifting is ridiculously rough and late.. Might be just a tad bit low on transmission fluid but I’m about to find that out but I doubt that is the only reason and will fix it back to a smooth shifts. Why wouldn’t you just take the fan guard off to get the second bolt when changing the thermostat?
@ProjectDanH3 жыл бұрын
Because I didn't want to remove the radiator.

16 or 18 lb cap, mine says 18 ?
@ProjectDanH4 жыл бұрын
the 4.0 system should be 16 lbs

Finally found someone who asked the same question! I have a 4.0 98 ZJ and all I can find is 18 psi rad caps. When I search online for the 16 psi it always says it's not compatible with my ZJ. I'm not leaking coolant anywhere but it tends to show overheating then cools down. I believe this is the problem because it doesn't stay at 210, but a tick over from 210
@infinitybandofkent Жыл бұрын
I went with a 16 lb rad cap now 3 years later I'm going with a 180 degree thermostat instead of of 190 because I run at 210 too
@knowledge5106_ Жыл бұрын
@@infinitybandofkent you don’t like your Jeep running at 210? I couldn’t find a regular 16 psi rad cap. Just had to pick up a Mr Gasket 16 rad cap from Oreillys that was $42.86 including tax with military discount.

Surprised that you don't have the skid plate package. I had to remove the front skid plate on my '96 Orvis 4.0 to get to the lower hose and petcock so I could change my water pump.

Yes, unfortunately I don't have one. If I lift this or take it off-road I'll eventually try to find one.
