I have a 2016 Mini S Countryman All4. Getting Engine Malfunction…Engine Operating at reduced output. Getting P1338 code. Starts take longer now. Definitely feel hesitation in acceleration. Not sure if it’s my imagination but there a certain odor inside the cabin when I put the heat on. This Engine Malfunction alert comes on and off. As per a lot of forums and KZbin, wastegate/sensor likely issue. Is it OK to operate the vehicle until repair can be made? I’ve already replaced the coils/plugs, air filter, and mass air flow sensors as many said to replace these before digging deeper into more expensive repairs. The MAF was definitely not working, so that was easily replaced. Would greatly appreciate any advice. Thank you.

FYI..... The starting point is to have 150.5 mm (+/-2mn) from the back of the mounting plate (the side facing the rod and nuts) for the vacuum actuator to the right side of the thingy that the two nuts sandwich. Another way to describe what I'm saying is the point on the left side of the nut that's between the thingy and the vacuum actuator. It's the point where that nut touches the thingy connected to the waste gate linkage.

I've got 110k miles on my R55. It has a very worn wastegate pivot. Should I just replace the wastegate and will I get more miles out of my turbo or should I just replace the turbo to avoid another problem?

got the JMTC 40mm turbo, and after 8 months the wastegate is actuator is shot. Crazy amount of rattle.

What if your replacing the waste gate flapper?... stock setting is 6" from the inside of the wastegate actuator mounting plate, to the inside of the waste gate flapper arm, give or take +3mm/-3mm. That will give you OEM starting point.

I get the code and feel like a back pressure When I push it hard especially past 4000 RPM be the issue that my actuator is not adjusted correctly and I’m over boosting too much

Great thread, someone on one of the forums said you can add 2lbs of boost by adjusting the actuator arm in slightly? But you are saying it only adjusts when the boost hits?

Is this a vacuum operated wastegate? If so, why? Most wastegates I'm aware of are held shut with a the actuator spring and use boost pressure to push them open. Seems quite counterproductive to use vacuum, as you don't have any under boost conditions.

It means you have a problem that needs to be looked at as soon as you can. It could be something very simple like a new battery, or it could be something bad and it will fail soon. The sooner you get it looked at the better. You would have a stored code there even if it goes away so definitely see what codes are stored.
