Hey Bill. Thanks for spending the time to make a clear cut video on how VS and Git hub interact. You made it sooo much easier than every other video. For my purposes right now as a student this video was spot on. I've been wanting to use this feature to put my uni projects onto GitHub so I can share on my intern applications. I see it of great benefit operating this way as many employers value applicants that have git and GitHub experience and they can view the interactions you've had with repositories in GitHub(at least I think that is the case) anyhow I appreciated your guide to Visual Studio and GitHub very much.

Thanks for the response. I’m thinking about building a course around best practices to implement ADO for both business users (product owners, shared services), and for developers. Not sure how I would deliver it.. paid or free on KZbin. If such an online training course was available, is it something you/your company would find useful and would you be willing to pay for it? Just doing a little market research, so not trying to sell you anything :)

@@bill-raymond I'm not sure we would for ADO since we've been using it in some form for a few years now, but we definitely keep an eye out for useful videos on things we're working on or are interested in for future use. (A lot of the guys on my team have been checking out Udemy courses lately.) To be 100% honest, most of the ADO control belongs to a whole other team that we have little say so with. @bill-raymond4 жыл бұрын
Hmmm.. that is odd. When you enable Git, you are doing so for the entire repo (Visual Studio project). Since you are seeing the gitattributes and gitgnore files, that suggests you are probably in the folder view. Try switching to the solution view and see if that helps? Solution Explorer->Switch Views icon (next to the home icon). Let me know if you are still having troubles.

Using VS2019. When I right click on a modified file I don't get the menu you get 14:47. You have "Undo, Commit, View History, Compare, Blame". I get just a "git" option and then I have to drill down into it to get "Undo, View History, Compare, Blame". First I don't like that I have to drill down and then "Commit" is missing from my list even though the file has changed and has red check. How do I get your menu options at top level and the "Commit" option?

Microsoft is changing the user interface, so it is almost time for a new video. They are going to finish rolling out the new features some time in the very near future. In the meantime, you should be able to use the team explorer and use the commit option.

@@bill-raymond Commit option from there is terrible. First you can't commit an individual file. It's all or nothing. Then they force you to add a label. If this is the state of git in VS, I'm sticking with VSS 2005 a while longer until they sort this out.

You can use the command line and it is annoying. I think the big new changes will be out very soon as they are in public beta.

@@bill-raymond Looked over the log for new changes. There is nothing there about adding single file commits. Even the check out button for individual files is missing. It's all about making merging easier when working with teams. I think this product doesn't cater to single developer use, where none of these new features matter yet the simple things are overly complicated. There is no muti-repo search or any of the other useful features Visual Source Safe had. Do you know of any other source control product that caters to local single dev use? I ask because the last VS update broke VSS integration and they won't fix it because that program is end of life.

Make sure you are up to date with the latest version of Visual Studio 2019. Type "ctrl+q" on your keyboard to go to the search bar. Type "New git user experience" and press enter. Enable that new experience. If you do not see it, go to the View menu and select the "View->Git Changes" menu item. Now, you will see all the files you have modified. Press the "+" sign next to the file or files you want to commit. That will stage the files. Then, type your commit message and select the "Commit staged" button. That is the new workflow and it is pretty easy and straightforward and I think what you are looking for. As for other products that offer Git flows, I am very (very) happy with Visual Studio Code. You can look up my video here that shows how to use it and it carries a lot less weight that Visual Studio 2019. As for a different source control system, I cannot recommend one because VSS was the last I used and I hardly used it :-). I am an individual developer working on little side projects and love using Git, so I can say for sure that as an independent developer, it works great for me. Sorry you are experiencing issues but do know that this is sort of THE source control system right now, so you might want to think about how a git workflow can work for you rather than the other way around. I do not say that in a way that should come off snarky, but just realistic. I had a hard time at first, but now that I understand it better and use it on the daily, I feel pretty comfortable.

Does one still need to install GIT apart from the process at 0:25?
@bill-raymond4 жыл бұрын
That is a good question. I’m pretty sure I started this VM without git installed previously so I don’t think so. If you can’t get it to work, then I suggest you do install it but I don’t *think * it’s necessary.

Thanks for an excellent tutorial on the use of Git and GitHub. Liked and subscribed to help the YT algorithm. Will check out the latest video referred to in another comment as VS 2019 has been updated.

Yes, the latest videos will be important because a lot has changed. Not necessarily with Git and GitHub, but the user interface.
