James Galway is top class. He is always a pleasure to listen to and makes everything appear easy to play even when the piece is challenging! This piece is a piece of cake for him to play. There is no sign of any struggle whatsoever. He is probably the finest flautist along with the late Jean Pierre Rampal. Amaaazing!!!

My Favorite Flute sonata is the Poulenc, then Martinu, .......but is creeping into my soul.......the more I listen to it.....I think it has the most potential for virtuosity and interpretation. You gotta love how Galway attacks the lower register........BRAVO

@blueraspberry100 They are audio frequencies in Hz used when tuning instruments. For example, A440 is the A above middle C and vibrates 440 times per second. A442=442 vibrations/second and so forth. In the US, A440 is considered standard tuning, but other places in the world use different standards.

This piece is so wicked difficult: he never gives the flute a chance to catch its breath!

I think the whole sonata sounds better on flute, since it was written for flute then transcribed for violin, but the 4th movement I also think sounds the best!

@4znhatred This is what happens when a composer writes for an instrument he doesn't play! My violinist used to complain about Beethoven's sonatas that were accessible, but awkward, always citing Mozart, who was equally comfortable with the violin as he was with the piano. Prokofiev worked with Rostropovitch writing for the cello but I don't think he had a specific flautist in mind for performing and consulting.

1. Nagahara doesn't have 24k; 20k is their purest gold. 2. Nagahara's 20k doesn't look so yellow, a characteristic associated with 10k yellow gold or 24k gold. He doesn't own 10k gold flutes, so it must be 24k. 3. I know 20k gold doesn't look like this because I tried one in Boston. 4. The crown rather looks like Muramatsu's as opposed to Nagahara's. 5. He owns a 24k Muramatsu. 6. However, having tried both, I must say I love the Nagahara. 7. Sorry for sounding so blunt :)

This is my favorite movement of the whole piece! I will say, his interpretation of this movement is not my favorite. He took it too fast and his tone is too bright. I mean, this is a triumphant end to the piece but this piece always calls for more tone colors to be used. Overall, it was still a good performance! :)

he is so great! LOVE HIS LOW NOTES!!! He could have been knighted for his low notes alone!!! lol most pro flutes now a days are being set tuned to A442, but I think he is tuning higher than that, he is pretty consistent, but higher than A440 or 442. Anybody know anything about his tuning style? maybe it's 442 and his vibrato just makes it seem higher.

Ok ..yes I agree I dont like Sir Galways aproach ,or technique but also realise a lot of people do. As a teacher I find it irritating that my pupils could relate to this, however his wife is trully amazing with her technique and feel for the music and doesnt go at 90 mph with every piece. My opinion sorry!!
@fotofavoloso2676 жыл бұрын
I agree with your well tempered critique. Sometimes Galway does take many liberties with the tempo...and the jazz player in me likes that he often strays from traditional interpretations. If I want less flare and more conventional interpretations I listen to Pahud. Still I love how FAT Galway's lower register is.

unenjoyable, as usual from Galway.... Tempo is wrong, tone is ugly, intonation is not flowless. Vibrato is truly horrifying. passages are botched. Style not good. Dynamics simply not exists.
