It doesn't happen that often but it's possible. People usually go to prom with their boyfriend/girlfriend or alone if they're single, at least in my country. Half of my classmates didn't have a date and I knew I wouldn't get invited because we don't tend to ask someone to prom just for the sake of it. I am a girl but asked a boy from another school and he agreed to be my date. We've been friends since Grade 1, so we had fun going together. He then told me that he remembers me asking him to go to prom with me some day when we were little. I have no memory of that conversation but it's very sweet.
