@@martinrayner6466 I don't think it was because of Charlie's answer to that question. I think it was his answer when David asked him how far he would go to find answers. That's when David decided to dip his finger in the drink. There's a detached, machine-like logic to it. David is not about holding a grudge, he is indifferent to human life. He is purely driven by his scientific curiosity. IMHO.

Part of Vickers's issues was also David; she was Weyland's daughter, but she felt replaced by David, who was basically Weyland's ideal version of his offspring. Thus, the rivalry Vickers forces upon David at certain points in the film, as she was trying to assert her dominance as the "true child" of Weyland, as well as prove herself superior to the android. Also, Weyland wasn't motivated by curiosity, it was greed and pride; he wanted to prolong his own life as he felt himself worthy of immortality. He would rather gamble on a chance to become a god than accept his mortality and allow his daughter to succeed him.

Thank you for the reaction!!! There is a version of this script where the Engineer speaks to David that the Engineers were cast out of a world called "Paradise" which is a reference to Lucifer's exile from Heaven in the John Milton's Paradise Lost. Even the beginning of the film is a reference to the Messianic sacrifice; a being is sent from above and sacrifices himself and his blood mixes with the water to create new life (Humans). In many religious texts blood is used as a substitution for water, and water is used as a substitution for blood. Additionally, many Messianic characters refer to themselves and their blood as the Water of Life. So through sacrifice, new life is created. This whole movie intertwines religious themes SO FREAKING WELL.

Absolutely! In of itself, both are really well done. Great production value, loads of action. Much like with Prometheus, fans of Aliens didn't like that it was a more cerebral movie idea, rather than action, bug hunt, or similarly, what happened story wise at the beginning of Alien 3. They're all superb movies, with Aliens, in the end, being the most different thematically.

Alien 3 just needlessly undoes Ripley's legacy for a cheap shock Nothing about it is elevated. The director has since distanced himself from the film, confessing the studio subverted his vision for it. I don't think his vision was that worthwhile in the first place, focusing on all the wrong things. It's not that it's particularly horrible: it's that, at best, it's an ordinary, bubble-gum sci-fi/horror. Personally, I somewhat enjoy those if I'm bored and it's streaming somewhere for free. At worst, though, it sets the franchise on the wrong trajectory from inferior visions of the saga and is arguably even a bit misogynistic in its failure to realize Ripley as a character. It's definitely nothing special. But reasonable minds can differ. NOTE: I took care not to mention any actual spoilers in this.

He was like the sacrifice to seed humanity. That “alien navigator” is the same giant navigator you see in the alien ship in “Alien”. You get to see the back story in this prequel. When the trailers came out for this movie I had no idea it was tied to the alien franchise until I saw the navigator scene. Being a fan I was blown away by the surprise and delighted. Shaw is going to where they come from bc she wants revenge.

@@CatherineLaSalle I like how this one started out as a kind of archaeological mystery in space. Some of the gruesome scenes reminded me of the melting faces in Indiana Jones haha

Ive always thought all of the alien movies are worth a watch with a movie series theres always gonna be 1 or 2 that are the least of the lot. Prometheus was an expansion of the story lore wise and i think its a good addition

I honestly feel like this premise could stand alone as its own franchise, not tethered to ALIEN at all!

Honestly, I never understood this movie. Like, I appreciate when a movie treats its viewers as intelligent and doesn't hold their hands and spoonfeed them all the answers. But I feel like there was some important information that got left out... like, why did the guy at the beginning melt himself? (We'll overlook how you can't get a human by just dumping a bunch of DNA or cells on the ground.) And why was David's entire motivation apparently to infect people with mutated aliens? What even was that black oil stuff and how did it all get there? Where did that original monster tentacle thing that apparently grew out of the ground come from? And how did the wild series of tentacle-monster-related events that took place in the movie _just happen_ to create what is, I assume, the first xenomorph? I guess a sense of inscrutable mystery was what Ridley and the writers were going for. But while things being unexplained is totally realistic, it doesn't make for a satisfactory narrative. Watching Prometheus is like listening to a small child tell a story that he's making up on the spot; things just happen, none of it makes much sense, and it kinda goes nowhere. The caesarean scene was amazing, though. Body horror meets medical horror meets squicky monster horror. A+++

I definitely agree with a lot of your points here! I feel like they scratched the surface with a lot of very interesting topics but then never explored them, and I just felt confused afterwards at times. I honestly would’ve liked to see them tackle this premise and the characters in a stand-alone story that wasn’t tethered to the Alien franchise, I feel like it operates perfectly fine on its own without having to be connected to that

I saw the original Alien when it came to the theatres. PEOPLE that say only Aliens the sequel is worth watching are full of sh*t & have no appreciation of cinema. Everything has to move fast & have lots of special effects. ALIEN was directed by Ridley Scott as well as this one. I like them all but the original & Prometheus are my favorite's.

"Sweet lord this is made in 2012? But the graphics. Here I am talking as if 2012 was from the freaking middle ages. But I feel like as far as technology has come. This freaking look better than somoe things made today." *cough*superhero movies*cough* Lets be honest, I think that's what most of us are thinking about when it comes to effects that are still looking fake like people are standing in front of a video game. Unless it's the Flash. That flat out looks like they took the CGI from the movie Polar Express.

I think most of their on location filming was in Iceland? But I'm not sure on that? Prometheus is an alright film - some BIG canon contradictions when put into context with the original ALIEN films, some issues with certain character development and arcs; basically, many of them made and even died from mistakes that you would not expect real scientists to risk - Holloway, and the biologist and geologist are case and point. And a few other things that don't make sense in a science and tech points - ie the med pod not recognizing female anatomy, when you have female crew members on board. The few creature designs and effects we got were very good! I liked the Deacon's final surprise emergence at the end! When Elizabeth had her "C-Section, for a 'MAN'", I really felt the urge to day, "Congratulations, it's a squid!" 🤣🤣🤣🤣 I really, really wish that the Engineers were a little less humanoid, and really embraced much more of something rather "Alien" compared to us in biology, technology and their actual appearance, like the original Space Jockey! They really could/should have embraced much more of the "other worldly", "cosmic horror", and "the unknown" themes originally present with the long fossilized Space Jockey in the concept of the Engineers, but by making them muscled out humanoids near genetically identical to humans really took a LOT of that away from them.

Very interesting points about the design choices for the Engineers, Jared!! I do agree with you - it could have been interesting to see a version of them that was SOOOO completely different from humanity as we know it - would’ve made for a very neat shock/discovery when they learned about them being our ancestors

@@CatherineLaSalle I've seen a LOT of various concept illustrations and paintings over the years of various artists' interpretations of a living Space Jockey. Some were kind of "boring", some were more interesting, and some were very, very eerie and creepy to look at! And something I had speculated at about a potential plot point for Prometheus (before the film premiered), was "what if" the Space Jockey/Engineer race had long gone extinct for some unknown reason? And what if the "goo" in the pods were left behind to potentially infect other lifeforms with something analogous to a biomechanical retrovirus? That would then breakdown the host's physical body over time and mutate it into a new/reincarnated (very "alien"/nonhumanoid looking) Space Jockey, with the working knowledge of their race's history and technology, who would then try to infect other worlds/species to resurrect the Space Jockey race! At least that's what I had speculated, until seeing the film when it premiered. I would have been pretty excited for a plot like that! And it would have been something new, horrifying and "alien" for the saga!

Also I have a love hate relationship with the horror genre. The hate part is that I feel too much films of the horror genre are just cheap shock value movies. Most of which are either just a contest between how much blood and severed body parts they can throw at the screen (see Terrifier as a good example) or is just some writer/director getting his perverted fantasies onscreen. The love part however is that I love the horror science fiction and horror parody subgenres though. The horror science fiction tends to actually have more creativity to it that I can enjoy. While the horror parody, especially the more recent ones, actually takes a generally good stories and just put a horror twist on it.

Very good point - I am not the biggest horror fan in general BUT I feel like I can get behind Sci-Fi horror because it adds an interesting story element at least, not just all gore / scares 😂 makes it more palatable for me, although this one STILL made me queasy

@@CatherineLaSalle Got to say, I love that you liked my post about switching to the Predator films after this movie until you can get a hold of Alien Romulus and glad you're doing that cause I see your Predator reaction! Also once you've gone past Terminator 1, John Carpenter's The Thing is often a pretty good science fiction horror too. Also crazy I just watch Alien Romulus, Totally Killer (horror parody of Back to the Future) and The Final Girls (Last Action Hero meets Friday the 13th parody) all this week for the first time and it's been a good week because all 3 films been great in their own way. If you want to take a slight break from the nightmare fuel movies, jump to fun horror movies, then jump back to nightmare fuel movies, I can give you some recommendations of fun horror movies.

If you're preparing yourself for Alien Romulus, I say you just have to watch Alien, Aliens 2, then this movie to understand Alien Romulus. Alien Romulus finally feels like the true sequel the Alien Franchise has been waiting for and the two main actors, Cailee Spaeny and the guy who plays Andy, are great. Don't want to say more, but felt like the movie deserves a sequel with them. Also if you're planning to watch more horror movies, I say after this one, no need for anymore Alien movies until you can get a hold of Alien Romulus unless you're really invested in the movies now. Instead I say jump over to the Predator franchise and watch the first two movies. The 3rd one with Adrien Brody isn't bad either, but might feel a bit like a rehash. Also if you haven't, watch the first Terminator movie if you're looking for more horror centric movies.

Australian CGI teams are among the best in the world; also had cooperation with WETA, some British teams, and an LA one. The sheer stupidity of most characters kind of undermined any sense of tension for me. Although, Elizabeth Shaw was usually sensible enough in danger that it felt real with her; also, David is a fascinatingly sad entity, since he grows to despise his creators, thus meaning he hates himself; I think his initial motivation is purely curiosity, and despite his heinous actions, he didn't act with malice until he becomes full-blown misanthropic at the end. David is also an inverse of the Engineer that hates its kind's creations. In Covenant, the idiocy becomes even worse, so you basically have to watch it like a black comedy. Anyway, this is never mentioned in the films, but according to an interview with Ridley Scott, there are two factions of Engineers, one - like the Mr. 8 pack at the start - who focus on creation, and the other - like the one fought by Shaw - are the military faction focused on destruction. Apparently, Jesus Christ was an Engineer, and because humans killed him that is why the military faction of the Engineers so desperately wanted to exterminate humanity. The Engineer at the end also displayed particular anger at David because a synthetic life was an abomination to them.
