⚠️ WARNING: THEY DROP THE F-WORD EVERY FIVE LINES OF DIALOGUE, LOTS OF IMPRESSIVE JUMP SCARES THAT TOOK YEARS OFF OF MY LIFE
y'all this was the reset that i desperately NEEDED!!! (but also i think this movie gave me a new permanent forehead wrinkle lol)
HAPPY REACTOBER! 🎃 👻 👽 Throughout the month of October, I'll be culturing myself and taking on as many horror film reactions as I can! Welcome to our fifth installment, where we watched THE CABIN IN THE WOODS (2011) described as Horror-Comedy, and boy oh boy did I need to spice things up with some humor to revive our Reactober venture! I'm not cut out for this horror life y'all 😂 so in spite of the jump scares that took several years off of my life expectancy, this was MUCH needed!
Stay tuned for many more scares in store! 🖤 🧡

The joke near the start with the textbooks where Kurt asks "Who gave you these?" and Jules' response, are a parody of a famous 80s drug PSA. A father comes into his son's room with a box of weed and demands to know where he learned about drugs, and the kid blurts out "You! OK? I learned it from watching you!" The design of the cabin as well as "Deadites" and "Angry Molesting Tree" on the white board are references to The Evil Dead. The guy with saw blades in his head is the "Hell Lord", and both he and the round puzzle are references to Hellraiser. "Twins" on the white board is a reference to the twin girl ghosts in The Shining. And "Kevin" on the white board is probably a reference to a serial killer named Kevin the movie Sin City.

Love this movie and was waiting for reaction since the poll. I always liked the meta theory that old gods are the audience - filmmakers keep sacrificing characters and need to make a show of it for us, thus all the horror movie tropes - choice of characters and monsters, gruesome deaths, final girl, etc.

Great watch, great reaction! Indeed worth seeing!... Very smart flick... also a lover letter to horror mythos, archetypal characters and tropes... one hell of a feast to horror fans! On a different note "Scream" also takes advantage of toying and using those archetypes and pointing them to the audience for fun!... The "trolley problem," taken to an extreme. Consequentialism versus deontology, with the consequentialists having lost any human connection with those few being sacrificed to benefit the many... and at the end, Marty deciding enough is enough. Tons of horror movie references and Lovecraftian horrors, of course, with my personal favorite being the pseudo-Cenobite (ala "Hellraiser") with the sawblade protruding from is face. Good times... 😄👍

The reason they lost the "human connection" is because if they have the connection, they will never be able to do their job. So its a natural human way of coping about the nature of their work. If they have the human connection they will just go insane.

I literally watched this movie for the first time last night. I was also expecting the movie to play with the characters in a more nuanced way. When I saw the 1 way mirror, I got super excited because I was hoping to see some commentary on human psyche and what not, with the "Employees" testing them to see if they were worth keeping alive. It's a fun movie that I wish went a different route.

Fair assessment, and I felt the same way! I thought it was potentially going to explore their respective character tropes a bit more to comment on WHY the typical “final girl” survives, etc. hence why I thought they were originally placing bets on who would be the last one standing!

In general there are two movies people talk about as little as possible. Fight Club and The Cabin in the Woods. In both cases to avoid to tell any spoilers because the surprises towards the end makes them so brilliant. It's interesting how few have forgotten the bird hitting the force field when he tries to jump the chasm with the bike. The entire setup is a ritual and parts of the ritual are that they have to choose and that they have to suffer. Most importantly that the virgin dies last if she dies at all. It's not just the deaths or the blood that keeps the ancients down in the ground, it's the entire ritual. But it all began with the cabin in the woods in 'Evil Dead' and the tropes it birthed.

Way back when, I got to interview Drew Goddard for this film. He used to be a writer for Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel, and it showed a lot in this movie. I hope now that you've become more "well-versed" in horror, i.e. "Evil Dead," the references hit the mark for you. Essentially they give a canon explanation for every horror movie ever made, and I love that.

Fun fact: each of the victims did fit the needed archetypes, however, not the ones assigned by the Facility. By trying to force them into becoming something they weren't, they sabotaged the entire sacrifice. Dana Polk designated as "The Virgin" - in reality, would be the Whore Curt Vaughan, designated as "The Athlete" - actually the Fool Jules Louden, designated as "The Whore" - actually the Scholar Marty Mikalsk, designated as "The Fool" - actually the Virgin Holden McCrea, designated as "The Scholar" - actually the Athlete

This is such a great movie and one of the best meta commentary movies there is, even better than Scream IMO. There are several clues on rewatch about what's going on, like the hair dye and high level text books compared to their devolving personalities except Marty who acts like a regular non movie person stoner throughout the movie. 10/10 will always watch. After Halloween I would also recommend Last Action Hero if you haven't seen it. It's the action movie equivalent to this movie and that's all I'll say about it.

This movie is meta and a satire if you know what is the meaning behind the movie. Basically, the "ancient gods" are us, the audience and we are being satiated by the horror tropes which the movie broke. Chris hemsworth was a Jock but he is a scholar, The stoner guy was observant and smart, The blonde girl was portrayed as a whore but she is not and the final girl was supposed to be the virgin but she isn't.

But the ones in a confined setting like The Evil Dead. Though unless Ash was a virgin, I guess that one was a failed sacrifice.

I like to think of this story as a sort of companion piece to Aesop's Fables, and like any good fable it carries with it a powerful moral lesson to be carried down through the ages. The lesson here: "Do not worry, children, and do not fret over the little things. Do not let your hearts be burdened by the banality of effort. Slow down, breathe deep, and let the passage of time wash over you with the gentle wind and the rustling of autumn leaves. Smoke weed, children. Smoke weed - every day."

41:02 They already answered it. Other than the meta answer which is that this is a commentary on the horror movie industry where the audience are the "Ancient Ones" who will rise up and destroy the industry by not patronizing and watching the movies they put out. But it's also because in-lore they said that they have to suffer. They did. They suffered a lot by that point int he movie and it should have been sufficient to then continue with the sacrifice. I mean, what do you expect? Those monsters are implied to be the creations of the the Ancient Ones. The Ancient Ones are sadistic malevolent deities - like most gods in stories - if their creations are anything to go by. They don't just want them murdered. They want them to suffer before they die.

You should try watching 13 Ghosts. Similar to this one minus the Hunger games vibe to it. lol.

More horror movies in a cabin in the woods, sounds like your favorite so far Cat lol. If your wanted a very well made film with no gore but has extremely spooky music and great acting check out The Shining. Horror Comedies- - The Monster Squad -The Addams Family - Zombieland - American Werewolf In London

First time I saw this I remember thinking it was like a messed up Truman Show! Glad I'm not the only one who linked it. I just think it would have been cooler with a merman...

Literally!! There were so many callbacks to other films like Truman Show, Hunger Games, and it reminded me so much of the Squid Game series, too!

Also - go Eagles! First comfortable win in about 2 years. Giants really should have paid Barkley but I’m glad they didn’t!

FOR REAL so sad I couldn’t get the game out here on the west coast but I went into it with the most confidence I’ve had this season that we’d BETTER get a win!

@@CatherineLaSalle - the game was 6pm here so a great time to watch! When I watched Eagles games in San Fran, I still couldn’t get over the 10am start. Rare morning drinking!
