Pronking Pronghorn

We've got a new animal joining the WolfQuest gang: pronghorn!
Pronghorn, sometimes called American antelope (though they’re not actually antelope) are fairly common animals in the northern range of Yellowstone. We’ve seen them many times in our trips there. But for WolfQuest, they’ve been lower priority for one simple reason: wolves don't eat them very much. Why not? Because they're very hard to catch! Pronghorns evolved in the very different world of the Pleistocene, when they had to outrun much faster predators, like the American Cheetah. Those predators went extinct long ago - but the pronghorn keeps on going, sprinting as fast at 55 mph (90 km/h).
But we’ve finally gotten to it, and this week’s devblog gives you a first look at our pronghorn. Created by a new artist on our team, Lise from Sweden, these pronghorn will be found in the Lamer Valley and lower-elevation grasslands. Like mule deer and elk, pronghorns form herds of different sizes and compositions over the course of a year. In the winter, they head to lower elevations and you won't find many around in the game map - which isn’t much of a problem, since wolves don't generally bother hunting adults. It's the fawns that are a more tempting target, both as newborns hiding in the grass, and later in the summer when they are ambulatory - not easy
to catch, but possible.
Other interesting things about pronghorn:
* They are distantly related to deer, and much more closely related to giraffes and okapi.
* Bucks have a pronged horn, while does have just a little stubby horn, if any at all. Generally, animals with horns keep them year-round, but pronghorns shed their horns each winter and then grow it back in the spring.
* The fastest land animal in the western hemisphere, pronghorns can sprint 55 mph (90 km/h) for half a mile (800m), and they can run 42 mph (68 km/h) for a mile (1.5km), and can sustain 35 mph (56 km/h)) for four miles (6.5km). In contrast wolves (and elk) usually run about 35 mph (56 km/h), with somewhat faster sprints for short durations.
* When detecting danger, pronghorns raise the hair on their rumps, making it a larger white area that alerts the herd of the threat.
Pronghorns will be in the next game update, but that won’t be for awhile. We have much still to do on them, along with many other things currently in-progress. But it won’t be too long before you too, can watch that white rump recede into the distance as it flees from your wolf.

A bit of a correction: Pronghorns don't actually drop their horns; they shed the keratinized sheath every year and then regrow the sheath over their boney horn core. Both males and females shed their horn sheaths, and let me tell you, their horn cores are bloody and look pretty weird when newly shed! It's more obvious in the bucks, as their horn cores tend to be bigger than the does, and in both sexes the horn core is cone-shaped and lacks prongs. When I was working as a wildlife tech in Utah I was lucky enough to find a shed horn sheath! Being keratin and not bone, like antlers, the sheaths decompose pretty quickly, and the sheath I found was rough and frayed. There are also rare individuals who grow four horns. In bucks, this manifests itself as a small, female-looking horn bump in front and a typically pronged horn set just behind it. In does, they're two sets of small horn bumps. Fun fact: there's fossil evidence of four-horned and even six-horned pronghorn species in North America during the Pleistocene!

Like a preservationist, a documenter or even a park ranger I just think it would be so cool, but at the same time I REALLY wanna e a scientist.. it such a hard decision of what I really want to be and what would be best for me

@@Maiasaur Wildlife tech work in the US and Canada is largely seasonal work -- it's really hard to make a living doing it, mostly because it's hard to find year-round work. There's a lot of moving around, most jobs last 3-4 months, it can be hard finding winter work, it's generally low paying, and when a job has housing, they usually don't allow pets. However, it's great for getting experience! I was able to use my accumulated experience to get into a Masters of Science biology program. Once I have my MSc, I'm more likely to be able to get more permanent work, though I would still be, at best, a junior scientist. If I were to get my PhD, then I'd be more likely to get a wildlife biologist job with the government, private company, or (least likely option) a non-profit. There are ways to be a field biologist!

I found out about wolfquest because my local newspaper had an article on it for some reason and my grandpa saved the article because he thought I'd like it. I really, really did. It was a big part of my childhood and now it gets to be apart of my adulthood too, hard to believe it actually got the funds to do a complete rework

pronghorn!! i love these guys, it's like looking straight into the past. it's interesting, because you can look at fossils of other pleistocene antelope and kind of see how they would've looked, as many of them have those same pronged horns as their present day counterparts.

Ahh, this is SO exciting -- I love seeing the ecosystem of our Wolfquest version of Yellowstone expand and grow like this. This is amazing! The pronghorn is an animal I have always wanted to see bouncing in the Lamar Valley, even when I couldn't explore down there back in 2.7! I was wondering, because pronghorn shed their horns, will the player be able to find old horns laying on the ground?? Maybe you could turn it into an achievement! "Who left this behind?" Would be a good title for when you find a horn on the ground!

Pronghorns are really cool and I didn't expect them to be added. They are really fast, and they have a horn that the outer layer shed every year. Although I h ope big horn sheep are still coming eventually. Either way keep up the amazing work guys.

Unrelated, but I'd love to see different kinds of illness for different reasons with the pups. Example, pups are more likely to get sick if they're under 30% hunger, and if a pup has wondered away it's more likely to pick up like a tick or a paradise away from the den. Maybe after a pup has survived an illness, and during, they eat less and have a faster lowering wakefulness due to lack of energy. Maybe this could be in the accurate game, I think it would be a cool concept and add a lot for fun challenges! And some illness may be contagious! Saying this as I'm raising 7 pups on challenging difficulty, and would love love LOVE more illness diversity; however it may be hard to accomplish, I'm not sure.
