As a German I really don't understand why you were so shocked by it being pronounced as Ksidnaf. Ks is just the normal way of pronouncing the "x" in my language. I never understood why english still uses the "x" in writing when they pronounce it exactly like a "z" anyway... lol

I understand you. Even in Spanish, the "x" letter is called "equis", and it has this KS sound. Maybe he didn't think about this KS sound because it's the first letter of the word, there is not a vowel before the "x". In portuguese the "x" has many pronunciations, but if we say: "this sounds like an X", then it sounds like "sch", in "Schumacher".

In Xhosa (a surviving language in South Africa with a pretty decent amount of speakers), your name would most likely be pronounced as ['ǁʰid.naf], with the [ǁʰ] being a click done by closing your mouth and letting the sides of your tongue touch the teeth until you make a click sound.

hey xidnaf, I was wondering why we have uppercase and lowercase alphabets, i mean, that is essentially two alphabets for the exact same sounds. sure they overlap (discounting size), but still it seems really inefficient as compared to korean or something. I know the greeks had upper & lowercase too, but where did THEY get it from? Thanks! P.S. is there a word to complete this analogy [uppercase is to lowercase as capital (letter) is to _____________]

@@somespeciesofpenguin I guess people wanted to feel important so they invented capital letter, which they put at the beginning if their names. For real though, it propably has to do with esthetics. Our alphabet just looks kinda ugly and they propably needed to make it look at least a little bit better when in use.
@kevincsellak296
@kevincsellak296 4 жыл бұрын
If I’d have to guess from the Latin etymology of “capital,” along with the extent to which I know typefont terminology, I’d say, “uppercase is to lowercase as capital is to body.” Of course, body often refers to the text not part of title, subtitle, and header, but I can imagine that distinction started with the Drop Cap vs other text.
@Wow-uk2on
@Wow-uk2on 3 жыл бұрын
ok I know this comment is kinda old but I can contribute! first, the original names for the letter cases is "Majuscule" (capital) and "Minuscule" (lowercase) so uppercase is to lowercase as capital is to minuscule would be my guess. secondly, originally most languages that have majuscule and minuscule were written entirely in majuscule (so always having caps-lock on LIKE THIS) but when people were writing things quickly it was way more efficient to write with smaller, rounder letters than large, blocky, angled letters, so words and sentences started to be written with the start in majuscule and ending in minuscule (like “THE QUick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog") and over time majuscule was used less as it's way faster to write minuscule, especially for monks who had to copy massive manuscripts by hand And without going too in-depth to the history of it (because that would take too long) the rules for capitalisation in English formed to be A) the first letter of the first word of a sentence, B) proper nouns (names, places, days of the week, deities, etc), C) a title when in a name (Mr Smith, Doctor Knowles, Archbishop Greene, etc,) but not by itself (mr, doctor, archbishop, etc), D) proper adjectives, adjectives that come from proper nouns (American, Victorian, etc), E) first person pronoun "I" (and all contractions- I'm, I've, I'll, etc), F) the beginning of a new line in poetry or song lyrics, G) acronyms and initialisms (ATM, HIV, PNG, etc), H) emphasis ("I am VERY hungry today"), I) aesthetically or stylistically for titles, subtitles, headings, brands, performance/pen names, etc. There's probably a few other rules that I forgot but that's about it for the most part The terms "uppercase/lowercase" come from the invention of the printing press, where two sets of letter stamps were made, one for majuscule and one for minuscule, to keep them separate and organised in the drawers they used (called "type cases") the majuscule letters were stored above the minuscule letters, as minuscule were used more often. The majuscule letters were stored in the _upper_ part of the case, hence _upper-case_ and minuscule were stored below, in the _lower_ case, hence _lower-case_ hope this helps! sorry it's so long lmao I tried to condense it as much as I could

Hey, my comment made it into the video! I should've said before that the /d/ is closer to [ɗ] because in my dialect when a voiced stop is alone in the syllable coda, it goes implosive, or as I used to say before I learned enough about linguistics to explain what was going on, they get swallowed. It gets realised rather weirdly halfway between the original stop and its nasal counterpart, so I think it's the beginning of a new sound shift in which syllable final voiced stops get turned into their corresponding nasal sounds. As for the voiceless stops in that case, syllable final /t/ is already realised as [ʔ], and the other voiceless stops are quickly barrelling in that direction.

Lojban can't be like Esperanto cause Lojban isn't like Esperanto. Esperanto is one of the most grammatically sloppy languages in the world, whereas Lojban is probably the most grammatically precise. People are lazy when it comes to speech. In other words, Lojban has no native speakers because it takes like a lifetime to become "fluent".
@craigdaniel5624
@craigdaniel5624 8 жыл бұрын
Also, Esperanto aspires to being an international language (but was developed as one for Europe and thus has European features rather than neutral ones), whereas Lojban mostly doesn't try (but has people who wish it would), but does strive for cultural neutrality (and thus distinctly isn't European-like).

Hi Xidnaf! Great videos, very educational and entertaining!:) May I ask - have you ever happened to be called 'autistic'? (or have you gotten that diagnosis?) I used to think a lot about this condition for myself for many years, but eventually I let go of it and now I'm just 'me' and that's it (no labels needed). However, you do portay some autistic traits in your mega cool videos, so I was just wondering what your response would be. You seem like a very, very, very cool dude - wish you had been my friend in high school!:) Bya! Sha

+Sha Vuklía Hi, I'm glad you like my videos! When I was really young I was diagnosed with "borderline asperger syndrome," which as I understand it is now part of the "autism spectrum." Thing is, the reasons they diagnosed me with that at all when I was young have gotten WAY better as I've gotten older, so I have no idea if I'd still be on the spectrum at all anymore. So yeah, because of that uncertainty I don't generally apply the term to myself.

+Sha Vuklía hi, can I ask you what would those autistic traits be exactly? I'm really curious, because I haven't really noticed any (or didn't realize they could be considered autistic) in Xidnaf's videos.

Anna Grimm I think the wikipedia page on "asperger syndrome" sums it up well: "significant difficulties in social interaction and nonverbal communication, alongside restricted and repetitive patterns of behavior and interests." Most of the time I really didn't like playing with other kids, and I really really liked routine and when it was broken I didn't cope well. All of which is sort of still true, but to a much lesser extent :P

yeah, I know what asperger is, I just didn't notice any signs of it in your videos, so that's why I was asking Sha Vuklía what gave them that idea, that's all ;p

+Anna Grimm Alright then, because you're asking: 1) he is very analytical (his videos - at least, his wording - are made with mathematical precision) and he has a great eye for detail (which is basically one and the same thing, but whatver) 2) he doesn't show emotions while talking (except for 'excitement', but no vague-ish emotions in the background), 3) his videos are very asexual (yea, this might sound weird, but most people include some form of sexual element in their 'work' or whatever, though this absolutely doesn't have to be explicit. If you don't get this point, never mind.) And well, that's it. Don't worry, I don't mean anything in a bad way. I used to be Asperg-ish too, but I learned (*am learning) the social games [most] people play in their lives.

When I first saw it, I pronounced it as [ɕinaɸu] probably from exposure to Japanese. The first and last vowels are kinda devoiced and I don't know why I left out the d. It sounds a little like "shnaf".

I found your channel too late to vote, but did you have any commenters suggest pronouncing the "X" as /d͡z/ like in Albanian? Years ago when I had time to make conlangs for fun, I had this orthographic convention in one. And yes, I meant to put in // instead of []. I don't want to appear pushy.
