I've been watching all your videos since they started! I was afraid they wouldn't continue, but thank you for coming back, all of them are really good. I am not an English native speaker, that's why they're really helpful!

Great video! Very helpful. Could you help me with the word 'landmark'. Do we have the same rule? Cheers
@bbclearningenglish4 жыл бұрын
Yes, absolutely. The 'd' sound is often dropped in 'landmark', especially if the speaker is talking quickly. 😃

Hi, Tim. How are you? Does this 'ND' phenomenon only happen in British spoken English?
@anhtran61137 жыл бұрын
I can't find anywhere a thorough explanation on the /d/ elision, but Tim speaks with a London accent only. The assimilation of /t/ before /p/ (which is explained by Tim in another video) only happens in some dialects.

I realize that many end sounds were disappeared or changed entirely in many sentences. Is it fine if I pronounce that way in IETLS speaking test?
@bbclearningenglish8 жыл бұрын
Hi Vinh. Thank you for your enquiry. Unfortunately it’s not a simple matter to explain the pronunciation of connected speech in words! There are many factors to consider when listening to a native speaker including their meaning, mood and the circumstances. However, you are right in saying that many times the endings of words can disappear in many sentences. If this issomething that you have noticed and can emulate, I am sure that it will benefit you. IELTS speaking is largely concerned with the successful communication of meaning , this includes clarity of speech. Whether or not you choose to emulate what you have observed, make sure that you are clear in your speech. It is more important to be understood than to sound like a native speaker! If you want to learn more about pronunciation, check this out: kzbin.info/aero/PLcetZ6gSk96-ayXj5thbTpbh2vHWpP08o. We hope this is helpful.

Pronounce 'handbag' as 'han-bag' - forget the 'd'! Hope that helps.

Hi Tim! why "d" is silent in "wednesday"?
@bbclearningenglish8 жыл бұрын
Hi Hamid. It’s very difficult to pronounce a /d/ sound immediately followed by a /n/ sound in English, so the /d/ is lost. The letter ‘d’ is there because in Old English, the word for ‘Wednesday’ meant ‘Woden’s Day’. ‘Woden’ is the Old English name for the Norse God Odin.
