I do agree he's not a psychopath, as entertaining as he is, his state of mind isn't really realistic. The moments with the dead mother, when he says "I love you" to Dee, when he's happy for Mac for getting out of the closet and most importantly with his biological son proves that he's capable to have feelings and connect emotionally with other human being.
