The rules were evolved to make it more flashy, like banning leg grabbing.

@@AussieAnnihilation I thought they banned leg grabbing cause wrestlers were coming in and just taking everyone down? I heard that from my BJJ coach but never found out if that was true.

@@brax300 well with both being Olympic sports judo needed to differentiate itself from wrestling which was there first, literally the first Olympic sport. It was seen to be boring as people would stand bent over with their legs as far back as possible to prevent leg grabs, which also makes it fairly hard to throw people. Most white belts do this in the beginning as a natural response to being terrified of being thrown. So it's partly also to develop the bravery to fight and be offensive in a match. But I'm also sure many wrestlers would have made a successful transition to judo with leg grabs.
