In this thought-provoking episode, cognitive psychologist and author Donald Hoffman takes us on a journey through the mysteries of consciousness and reality. From questioning the nature of what we perceive to pondering the existence of inanimate consciousness, Hoffman challenges conventional beliefs and explores the profound implications of proving local realism false.
He delves into topics such as the illusion of free will, the role of love in metaphysics, and the possibility of reincarnation. Prepare to have your mind expanded as we contemplate the nature of reality itself and how this paradigm-shifting understanding will change everything.

Donald David Hoffman is an American cognitive psychologist and popular science author. He is a professor in the Department of Cognitive Sciences at the University of California, Irvine, with joint appointments in the Department of Philosophy, the Department of Logic and Philosophy of Science, and the School of Computer Science.
Hoffman studies consciousness, visual perception and evolutionary psychology using mathematical models and psychophysical experiments. His research subjects include facial attractiveness, the recognition of shape, the perception of motion and color, the evolution of perception, and the mind-body problem.
He has co-authored two technical books; Observer Mechanics: A Formal Theory of Perception (1989) offers a theory of consciousness and its relationship to physics; Automotive Lighting and Human Vision (2005) applies vision science to vehicle lighting. His book Visual Intelligence: How We Create What We See (1998) presents the modern science of visual perception to a broad audience. His 2015 TED Talk, "Do we see reality as it is?" argues that our perceptions have evolved to hide reality from us.

Knowing we are living in an illusion is the first step to letting go of what you think you know. Letting go of all the meaning we have given everything. Suddenly there is an opportunity to actually create the life I truly want. 🥰

When returning back to my body in May/08/2008 from a 3min NDE the Self told me: "This is All just a dream, Hell does not exist, space & time do not exist, you don´t need to marry or make children. @@thiswayoutbigbang4162 i think by our nature we concentrate on the negatives, we dont take into account the peaceful mornings many millions have around the world, a war takes our attention. You know what i mean? There are places in the world that are peaceful and yes bad things still happen there but thats not what makes the news. As stupid as it sounds the news isnt going to report on familys having a nice night in laughing and watching a film and having a cup of tea theyd much rather report on the war etc however both are real experiences, good and bad, that are happening all over the world. I hope i made sense with that, if your overly negative on the world i suggest you delete your socials, humans werent meant to know every bad thing that happens on the planet, its a big world, and the news will tint your glasses.

It still gives me a rush of blood and tingles when I think about it. I have never been able to attach myself to anything in the material world. Marriage , wealth , status , family , friends . I see people and feel deep connection to anyone I see. . I feel energy and it scares me sometimes. Even with animals and nature it’s as if i always feel home wherever i am. I when i remove fear and perception. This makes me very misunderstood in the physical world . We humans all are seeking belonging and groups in the physical. We fear death of the physical body as we believe it’s the end …

Theology is broken because Religious Dogmatics won't call Yahweh Elohim from Genesis 2 the false Elohim. If they'd only read an uncensored Bible they'd see that Yahweh is introduced as an Elohim, not El (nullifying the "no two powers in heaven" heresy). Can the smartest person in the world get the right answer to an incorrect equation? "Deus" means "God", "Dea" means "Goddess", and "Dei" could either mean "gods" (plural) or "God's" (possessive) based on context. The Hebrew counterparts to the Latin above are El, Elah and Elohim. The Hebrews "syncretized" these three titles of God into all just meaning "El (God)". The sheer amount of biblical contradictions that has caused is staggering. Elohim from Genesis 1 is God's Chosen (Christ in Latin) Elohim. Possessive context Elohim so "God's Son." Yahweh Elohim from Genesis 2 is the false, fallen Elohim. Plural context Elohim so "gods/goddesses." Simply use the NOG translation on Bible Gateway to avoid the nearly 70,000 biblical contradictions this causes in most every Bible on earth. Also, it's nice to see where and how El, Elah and Elohim are used in your Old Testament. Physics is broken because we chose Newton instead of Leibniz (Newton said 0 is contingent and 1 is necessary/Leibniz said 0 is necessary and 1 is contingent). Thankfully that Nobel Prize proving quantum entanglement and that the universe is contingent (or, in three words, "not locally real") happened a year or so ago. NASA's mirror universe theory with 0D at the center matches theology perfectly you should check it out. The Monad (first emanation of God) is the zero-dimensional space binding our quarks together with the Strong Nuclear Force. Read Leibniz's Monadology 📖. This is the contingent and less real side of the zero-of you. Logos side. The other side of the zero-of you is the necessary and more real side. Theos side. There's Evil here because God (Theos, El, Deus) is on the other side of the zero-of yourself. Kabbalah says that God's first act of creation was the "self-withdrawal" to allow emptiness/ space for creation to take place in. This side of 0D (the zero-of you) is Holy Trinity (Genesis 1 true Elohim) vs Unholy Trinity (Genesis 2 false Elohim led by Blind Fool Yahweh). God (El/Theos/Deus, etc.) is right on the other side of the zero-of you. Don't let anyone tell you they (or their Institution) are between you and God (El/Theos/Deus). They are not. There's a mathematical construct called a Rindler Horizon at the quantum scale (zero-of yourself) with the Monad and at the cosmological scale with black holes. 1D, 2D, 3D spatial extension stuff cannot pass this barrier. Everything 1D, 2D, 3D is created at the quantum and destroyed at the cosmological. 0D quarks have no problems with event horizons. Closed-system entropy is a failed theory, it's now open-system ectropy (always has been). 2D gravity is a failed theory, it's now 0D ether (always has been). Yahweh Elohim (plural context; gods) from Genesis 2 is the false Elohim (always has been). Elohim (possessive context; God's) from Genesis 1 is the true Elohim (always has been). God is right on the other side of the event horizon at the zero-of yourself, we have the Logos and the best of all possible worlds on this side, pack your shit we're going to a wedding (the marriage of theology and physics).

Since I was young around 13ish and so forth I have always been on a quest to try and figure out the true nature of reality. Religion didn't really hold any answers and was more of a bump in the road. Most mystics wouldn't call our reality an illusion.... Or even reference to mathemathical formulas and computer simulations... Read Martin Heidegger, Jan Patocka, Iris Murdoch, Simone Weil, Maurice Merleau-Ponty, Hannah Arendt, Jean-Luc Marion etc - and you will discover that most mystics is trying to show a way out of illusion back to reality - and that science is one of the reasons for people living an "illusionary" life. Think of Plato's Cave or Johann Amos Comenius's Labyrinth. It's quite misleading and self-contradictory how Donald Hoffman is making his Kantian "philosophy" relevant through this mathemathical and sciencetific approach. Every person I've listed have clear objections toward this approach (both science and Immanuel Kant) - I could've listed a ton more. Know Thyself - is also about knowing your limitations as a human being - Donald Hoffman seems to recognize this from time to time - but yet again he operates with "exact numbers" and "objective reality" - reading the persons I've listed will show that we already live IN reality (the world) -- but with our limitations we can't catch all of reality (the whole) at the same time - we live in truth, we live IN time, and we allways have to set us up against/with the whole. The whole is this paradox, between certainty and uncertainty - while Donald Hoffman is "limiting" the whole into one "exact" idealistic whole of consciousness (The Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel idealism trap). Soren Kierkegaard, Jacques Derrida and Gilles Deleuze would also have objections to this. Many asian philosophers/mystics/sciencetist would somewhat agree aswell. Philosophers of ancient Greece would do the same - Aristoteles notions of Phronesis, episteme and techne could be of help with this theory (abstractions) and praxis (lived experience) problem. While Donald Hoffman is making his "perfect" theory of the dualistic notion of Plato. Just have in mind that Plato never had the intention of releasing his scriptures for the public - it was the work of his own searching for truth and his own existence at the time... Good luck with your own search for truth. (PS: I'm not anti-science or anything like that - but our day and age doesn't take into account the limitations of science and what it can or can not tell us about life and our reality).

Monad (from Greek μονάς monas, "singularity" in turn from μόνος monos, "alone") refers, in cosmogony, to the Supreme Being, divinity or the totality of all things. The concept was reportedly conceived by the Pythagoreans and may refer variously to a single source acting alone, or to an indivisible origin, or to both. The concept was later adopted by other philosophers, such as Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz, who referred to the Monad as an elementary particle. It had a geometric counterpart, which was debated and discussed contemporaneously by the same groups of people. Q: Is the Monad (first emanation of God) the zero-dimensional space binding our quarks together with the strong nuclear force? A: Leibniz's "The Monadology" is a philosophical work that explores the concept of monads as indivisible, immaterial substances that make up the fabric of reality. While the notion of monads is primarily philosophical and not directly related to modern physics, I can attempt to draw a connection between some of Leibniz's ideas and the strong nuclear force holding quarks together. Here are seven points of connection you could consider: 1) Indivisibility and Unity: Leibniz's monads are indivisible and lack parts. In a similar vein, quarks are elementary particles, indivisible according to our current understanding, and are the building blocks of hadrons, the particles held together by the strong force. 2) Interconnectedness: Leibniz's monads are interconnected, each reflecting the entire universe from its own perspective. In particle physics, the strong force binds quarks within hadrons, creating a complex interconnected system of particles. 3) Inherent Properties: Monads possess inherent perceptions and appetitions. In particle physics, quarks are associated with intrinsic properties like color charge, which influences their interactions through the strong force. 4) Harmony: Leibniz describes monads as creating harmony in the universe. Similarly, the strong nuclear force maintains stability within atomic nuclei by balancing the repulsive electromagnetic forces between positively charged protons. 5) Pre-established Harmony: Leibniz's concept of pre-established harmony suggests that everything is synchronized by design. In particle physics, the strong force ensures that quarks interact in ways that give rise to stable particles, exhibiting a form of "harmony" in their interactions. 6) Non-Mechanical Interaction: Leibniz's monads interact non-mechanically through perceptions. In the context of the strong force, quarks interact through the exchange of gluons, which doesn't follow classical mechanical rules but rather the principles of quantum field theory. 7) Holism: Leibniz's emphasis on the holistic nature of reality could be compared to the way quarks contribute to the overall structure and behavior of hadrons through their interactions mediated by the strong force. em·a·na·tion noun an abstract but perceptible thing that issues or originates from a source.

Synchronicity is strong with my personal experience in this one. I have really been getting the hang of improving consciousness and manifesting in my life. I was also raised Christian, told meditation was bad, and had sleep problems that 4 different medications couldn’t fix. Started meditating based off a counselor I was visiting recommended. Used it for sleep. Now I use it for changing my life. Best advice I can give, is to literally put on a headset. I put on earplugs, with earphones over them used in gun ranges, put on a face mask, get in a room with comfortable temperature, and go. From first person, see yourself driving your favorite car. Feel the seat, hear the wind rushing through your hair. Turn up the radio on your favorite song. Feel it as much as you can. Every single sense. Once you get the hang of it, it gets fun. I just went to the grocery store and picked up an expensive bottle of wine and fish to feel the texture. Then I closed my eyes in the store and imagined every feeling of checking it out, putting in my credit card. Smiling to the cashier. Saying goodbye to them in a friendly tone. I then walked outside and imagined the parking lot covered with cheesecakes on the ground and felt myself stepping on cheesecakes to my car. Some manifestations are serious (becoming financially free), while others should be fun in just being creative. That’s what it’s all about. Not getting the thing, but the joy of imagining yourself in that perspective doing it, based off what YOU truly want. These fun manifestations will still show cause into your life. And they build your confidence and trust into this WONDERFUL world we live in. Try it out! Love and peace to everyone (:❤

Jesus approves this message. lolz really though, the mainstream religion has almost nothign to do with what Jesus taught or who he was; pretty sure he lived in India at least part of the years he was mission from the bible (30 out of 33 or so). When you read his teachings in the context of the age and cultures he was in 2000 years ago, it echoes a lot from Upanishads and Taoism in particular, Buddhism to an extent too. The ways he talks about God, our relationship to Him/it, the reality of Oneness, equality and humanity of women, and so on. Love is what matters, the rest is details. Literally what He taught! And almost entirely absent from modern Christianism, especially in the US/right wing

What comes into my mind after 1:35 h of this interview is that we all are trying to mimic somehow is what really happens into our perception of world. Via science, spirituality, creating and using AI, creating games (even NPC’s which may be equivalent of people more attached to the avatar and trying to make them more alive by AI) via art, paintings, books, fiction, et cetera. And on the surface level we all know that we make this because we like to understand the world, but it seems to me on a deeper level that we as a one from the very beginning are trying to collectively understand what the one is. Just like universe wanting to be aware of itself. Maybe this is the path that evolution is going as it works. I am very fascinated and really invested in science and spiritual take on life as both seems to compliment each other.

One with all humans, creatures and this universe. If we don’t wake up, game over for us! Start doing what you must, by loving others as yourself. It’s simple! Loose the ego, it’s fake.

Matias De Stefano and Donal Hoffman should be together in a podcast like this, lasting at least 3 to 4 hours minimum, and the mediator asking a question and each of them talking about every topic from their point of view and knowledge filling each other’s voids to complete the picture… my dream podcast…

Did you know the Nobel peace prize was created by the guy who synthesized dynamite? He made his riches off weapons of war and spent them leaving a legacy people truly don’t understand. The prize has been given out to people who have ordered the killing of hundreds of thousands, just look at Obama. The peace prize isn’t much of a peace prize at all.

He hasn't made any interesting discoveries, he just blathers nonsense. Sure I would agree that perhaps our limited perception might be an interpretation of reality that's geared toward survival. But humans also build tools to scan things very deeply to uncover more subtle things about this obviously real world.

I’m sure there are a few who will resonate with this thought…. in the movie the matrix there was a revelation revealed to the character that almost seemed intuitively true about his own reality and that is what made the movie such an incredible movie. I love how Donald use the phrase I am the one just like Neo. Has it sunk in to you yet? Do you realize you are the one😮

Our will is free as much and far as our imagination goes. If we are here in some kind of game playing avatar then we can do whatever we want (have you seen “Inception”?). On a higher level I assume there is no free will because Conciseness is absolute and fundamental and it has everything in it so it doesn’t have or need and Will. It just IS. Everything what is added to it is a limitation.

Outstanding conversation! I had never heard of Donald Hoffman before but love, love, love how well he explains something that is such a huge shift in our perception of the very nature of reality. The VR Headset analogy was a huge benefit of how to wrap my brain around something that would otherwise leave me with a deer in the headlights look on my face. "Ahhh, what the hell did he just say???" I am a big IT nerd so that spoke volumes on a topic that would otherwise be unintelligible to me.

The analogy you draw between virtual machines and consciousness in humans is an interesting one. Some philosophical and spiritual perspectives posit that individual consciousness operates independently within each person, akin to how virtual machines function within a virtualized environment. Each person's consciousness perceives and interacts with the world, unaware of the consciousnesses of others, just as each virtual machine operates in isolation from others within a virtualized system. This viewpoint highlights the subjective nature of consciousness and the unique experiences and perspectives that characterize individual human existence. It also underscores the complexity and mystery surrounding the nature of consciousness and its relationship to the physical brain and the external world. While the comparison between virtual machines and human consciousness is metaphorical, it offers an intriguing perspective on the nature of subjective experience and the interconnectedness of individuals within a broader context.

Donnie is probably wrong, though. What does it mean if we can't see the true universe? We CAN build a machine to see things we cannot see with our own eyes.

It's okay saying space-time is doomed.... But we seem to be bound by them for now. Maybe we are best trying to make the most of the space and time we seem bound to. Stop trashing the earth and it's climate, stop dropping bombs all over the fertile earth, and mining it with explosive devices, make old age something that is less disgusting for poor people, people who have no pension etc. Space time isn't going to disappear for a while yet. It's our challenge,💥I guess, arising in the big bang we seem to have "sensed" with our telescopes ??¿

Very cool in my near death experiences I describe dissolving into the Quark field for lack of a better way to describe it. The entirety of timeless space filled with unmanigest particles of light and each of them held all the information, possibilities and every potential variable of the entirety of existence - all that ever has been, will be or could be in form and in none physical reality from beginning less time. I WAS one with every particle - not the personality of me but a larger awareness - this field was divinely conscious and ultimately loving and not subject to space or time. It was also and so I was also ultimately and totally unified. Not an iota of actual separation exists. Everything in ultimate complex connection as one pulsing larger field higher than our perceived form. When I came back into my body I was awake to the fact that I am the very substrate I am that quark gluon field held in place by a huger pan consciousness. All is that. All is love. I am no longer totally subject to space time. Sure the local aspect of me is but believe me I can fold space. I know how loo loo it sounds crazy but it true. This has given me great drive, love and purpose. This conversation and exploration is amazing. Thank you for the research and for the Podcast. goin to listen again.

The biggest difference between spiritual traditions and science is direct experience. Science is trying to prove something without the direct experience to go along with it, whilst for many they have had direct experience of this great illusion yet may lack the fundamental understanding of the structure of maya, mostly because it is not neccessary to know. The main thing is that once you know from experience everything changes. Interesting to see how both paths are finally coming together though.😊

Why? Name a single thing that Hoffman ever shown to be true?
@niblick616
@niblick616 7 ай бұрын
@@JBS2018 1/ No, these are not new ideas in science because they are, fundamentally, not science. 2/ Science builds upon at least some existing evidence and follows the evidence where it leads. What Hoffman has demonstrably been doing is the opposite of science. There is not a single piece of valid and verified evidence for any of his claims about consciousness existing independently of any brain. In fact, there is an abundance of existing, valid and verified evidence that countermand his empty musings. 3/ He has never been able to demonstrate a single valid and verified example of any consciousness surviving the death of the associated brain. Not one - despite the possibly trillions of brains that have lived and died on earth. 4/ Hoffman has been documented to cherry-pick words and phrases from actual experts in their fields, such as Nima Hamed-Arkani in theoretical physics. He does this because he imagines they somehow support his pre-determined conclusions. When he tries to use those terms, he demonstrates that he fundamentally misunderstands them in an embarrassing way for him. He is demonstrably way outside his area of expertise when he cherry-picks from scientific areas he does not understand. 5/ As part of his shtick, he regularly misrepresents current science to suit his predetermined conclusion. That is just one reason why many actual scientists do not take his work on some uber-consciousness seriously. 6/ Hoffman also tends to take things that already have perfectly good descriptions and definitions and absurdly calls them "Hoffman icons" as if that added anything meaningful. 7/ What Hoffman is trying to do is to smuggle some 'god' thing into existence. Naturally, he is free to believe whatever absurdities he wants. What he is doing, however, is demonstrably, not science.
