David, you should see the BEAMS swapped Corollas in south Africa. Soo much cleaner looking. 200 hp in N/a form in a light chassis ftw. Like you said, it's all about using what you got. You should do more videos on non supported commuters like this. Love it. The creativity here is great. Makes you think outside the box.

This Corolla is actually really popular amongst car enthusiasts in the Philippines. Most of their Corollas are packed with 4AGE's and are just utterly beautiful looking. It's like the Foxbody of the Philippines.

I'm looking for another 89 Corolla LE. Made the mistake of selling mine last year, dark grey with sunroof and all power options, tachometer, with the 4af engine. It even had chrome trim and factory mud flaps. It was in good shape with top engine rebuild, radiator, water pump, timing belt etc done at 120,000 miles. Exhaust rims and tires, paint job at 125,000. Sold it for $3000 with 136,000 miles. I purchased it in 2005 with 105,000 miles for $500. Can't help but wondering how much I could have done with it, especially looking at others like this one.

Dude, my parents used to have a 1989 Corolla from my birth year that my parents bought from new. It was a sweet little car which I wish we still had, but my sister used it as her first car and ended up starving the engine of oil and seized the engine, or cracked the block... one of those. I wish we still had that baby, I would love to be driving it today!

Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes! YAS! My first car was a 1995 Toyota Corolla DX (AE102) and I've recently decided to resurrect the ideas that I once had for that car. I don't have that exact car anymore, but I can buy a 102 for cheap! I wanna kinda go this route. Wheels, springs, seats (used Recaro SR3), wheel (used Nardi Gara), shifter, audio, intake, header, exhaust, and be done with it. Why? Because I loved that car. It's just a grannymobile to everyone else, which makes it that much cooler. Thank you so much, David, for sharing this.

My parents bought an AE101 corolla new in 1995. Its done 23 rainy UK winters, took me & my sister to school, college, work and has never needed any work on the engine, gearbox or electrics. I love the corolla and when people say why the love for the corolla, I simply say that anyone can love a supra, skyline, mustang or Lamborghini, but it takes a real car enthusiast to see potential where others can't. Yotagang for life.

This made my day! As a 90's Corolla owner myself. I have a 96' here. It was my first car and even though it's seen better days it has been and will continue being modified as I go. It's got a long history on the road. Mine has 245K miles on it and it's still going strong. Hopefully one day it will be completed how I want. Maybe it will get a chance to be reviewed too. Awesome video as always!

Yeah, I don't know how the trans can be any worse than this ae92, corolla's have been using similar cable shifted, hydraulically actuated clutch, C-series trans since the 80's. That c60 trans in the t sport compressor isn't any different then the c60 in the celica or matrix of similar years (besides maybe gear ratios). They aren't the smoothest transmissions known to mankind and I agree that all toyota cable shifted transmissions leave a bit to be desired but they're definitely far from the worst. Toyota's mcpherson strut suspension has always been on the soft side from the factory, with a squishy, squat-y, lean-y, ride. For the average commuter this suspension is perfect, for a person looking for a sporty ride they never run on toyota's stock suspension. Toyota has always had problems with the supercharged upgrades, from the 1mz to the 2uz. They seem to always have a problem with the fueling and timing. I believe they try to make sure the setup stays emission compliant and they sacrifice power and power delivery. Toyota ecu's are known to block/override any piggyback fuel controller, which is why you should replace it with standalone engine management.
@ryancooper6260
@ryancooper6260 6 жыл бұрын
n0ti5 huh. That is very good stuff to know. If i want to add forced induction to 1.6 cvt e170 i've to get a standalone ecu like elite ecu. It's a must anyhow but the stock ecu eould be a hassle to deal with, right? I'm planning to supercharge mine with compatible trd supercharger and solve the suspension system with d2 coilovers amd keep the stock brakes with ceramic brake pads. I'm just not sure that the cvt will br happy with it. Or should i get a project car like a 240z (if i could find one in my country) or a celica. I'm asking for your recommendations if you may.

Great review David! I'm a huge AE92 fan, and it was really cool to finally see you in one. Only thing is that the 4A-FE motor in that car is actually a dual cam. It uses a "slave cam" system. The timing belt wraps itself around only the exhaust cam, and under the valve cover the exhaust cam drives the intake came via scissor gears

fin harms I mean people have made 300 NA HP on a stroked 4AGE before. I know someone has done 1000hp (somehow) on a turbo 4A. Plenty of people have gone 200+ mph with the 3RZ from the Tacoma and the 3SGTE. The 2AZ can make up to 900hp in boosted form too. Just cause Honda has more aftermarket doesn't mean you can't make some impressive hp figures on Toyota engines. Besides, you being a Honda guy shouldn't explain why you like the worse sounding 4AGE
@finharms9439
@finharms9439 6 жыл бұрын
Daniel Lott yea they can make good power... but not easy... but key word... stroked.. thats a built motor, and the 3sg is a great engine, not taking anything away from a good toyota but at the end of the day if simplicity and ease of parts both oem and aftermarket Honda takes the cake my man, no doubt about it, that being said the 200+ mph thing that all has to with gearing highly doubt a stock tranny will get you there

My uncle had two Corollas, that gen, except it was an '88, and when that was totaled, the insurance replaced it with a '95 model. He drove from new, until the days before he passed away in 2010. Sadly, my aunt sold it, though I wanted to keep it, and replace the gas tank. 220,000 miles, and not a mechanical issue at all. That's a testament to good, quality craftsmanship.

I'm the same as him. My first car was a 1991 Corolla 4 door sedan (like his). Mine is white with red interior and it belonged to my mother. She bought it new on a dealer ship in '91 and I just love the car. I currently rebuilt the engine and she's running like new, still has the original interior seats. They aren't 86, but they are fun to drive and awesome.

This generation isn't the first time the Corolla got FWD. During the same time the Trueno/Levin were out there were FWD models of the Corolla, including the Corolla FX16 hatchback that was available with the 4AGE as well, which is pretty fun.

Ppl don't seem to understand that there was FWD Corollas in the E80 generation too lol everybody so stuck on a single model code within a whole generation of cars. E80 Corollas had FWD, RWD and may even had a AWD version. The Corolla was a very well rounded car at one point

I was searching through the comments section looking for this comment specifically!! I knew I wasn't crazy!! thanks for confirming what I thought. My Grandparents had 2 of these ae92 or whatever the nerds call them, but before that they had an older even more boxy one, my friend's father also had the very same old boxy corolla as well. I was 99% positive that it was also FWD.

@@Where2bub Nice, AE92s are pretty nice. They were basically the following gen Trueno/Levin, so they came with 4AGEs and they had optional pop-up headlights, they looked pretty slick too. I still wouldn't mind getting the older FX16, they're like Toyota's answer to the CR-X.

But had no power steering & every bump, swore I'd jump up or sideways an inch or two..... But was a fun car & ran great for having 200K on engine. Love this vid.....& would like a few more throwback cars like this. Cheers, A

But yeah, your correct, was....is I suppose considered '84 Fiero even though was built in '83.... When I got it, the rear driver's break line was held together with vise grips & electrical tape(and had no rotor either!)....didn't know at time cuz trusted the guy(family friend) & drove it 300 miles home like that. Found out when we're replacing breaks & tires etc....
