Prop shaft and rudder post installation

In this video I finish making the rubbing strakes, install the new cutlass and rudder post bearings, install the rudder post and begin to install the prop shaft.

Just a thought. If you have to leave something undone, just tie a piece of fluorescent plastic tape to it. Easy to see and a good reminder.

Saw a good trick on a sailing channel: On a shaft seal arrangement such as your rudder seal, one can "queue up" a couple of spare seals on the shaft, ready to go. If the seal leaks you gouge it out, cut it off the shaft, and simply slip the next one home. Potentially saves heaps of dismantling and reassembly.

As an experiment, i gave the prop on my sailboat a layer of LANOLIN this year as protection against growth and barnacles. Time will tell if it works!

If you know anyone with some old CO2 fire extinguishers that are needing a service / recharge - use them to "spray" the prop shaft to cool it down rapidly and without mess or the hassle of handling dry ice and getting it to stay in location.

Use an air chisel with a bolt and socket on the end to move that prop shaft in, Works great for bearings and ujoints as well....
