Propaganda - Purveyor Of Pleasure (Official Video) [feat. Thunder Bae]
Düsseldorf-based Propaganda are one of the most influential synth-pop bands of the 1980s and enjoyed international success well into the 90s. In 2024, they are picking up on their early work, developing their influential sound and allowing it to culminate in contemporary electronic pop music. For their new P-Maschinerie Michael Mertens and Ralf Dörper have recruited Düsseldorf-based singer Thunder Bae. With the new single Purveyor of Pleasure, the band is now sending a first sign of life to their fanbase.

Reaching the old Propaganda level is a hell of a task, and it is definitely weird to see them without Claudia and Suzanne, but this is way good enough to put it on repeat. Thanks for coming back!

Really nice - great to see you guys still making great music! I love the way this track sounds modern yet has the traditional Propaganda sound with its undulating sequenced synth arpegiator - which is the classic sound that made "Heaven Give Me Words" so good too - Please can we have a proper release your 2000s tracks again "No return" etc and "Duel 2000" at some point ?

Its seems to me that Claudia Brücken, Susanne Freytag and Stephen Lipson are more going for the spirit of the original Propaganda (calling themselves "xPropaganda" for not owning the name) whereas Michael Mertens and Ralf Dörper seem to want to continue the more soft-ish pop-ish airy sounds of the second album which was the follow up after the rupture with ZTT and Claudia --- sounding nothing like Propaganda although I heard that it was quite successful in some countries too. After such a long time, the two "branches" are living on - isn't it exciting.

Hmmm..... I'm not sure what to think. I'm in no way a critic or judging. To be fair, it is a wonderfully arranged track, and the creators had a vision for it that became what it is. The vocals are gorgeous, She is a very talented singer, but.... is she the right fit here? I'm thrilled beyond reason to hear new material from Ralf and Michael though! More please!

Not for me, this, I'm afraid. Indeed it proves what I thought all along. Mertens and Dorper have an entirely different musical voice which has little to do with what I love about the original Propaganda ie. the wonderful sound sculpturing of Stephen Lipson, both as engineer and musician, along with the voices and attitudes of Claudia and Suzanne. Fortunately the three aforementioned released their own 'new' album which has all the heart and soul I would expect a 21st Century Propaganda to have.

Michael Mertens, this has the glimmerings of something great. But we need you to dig deeper into any remaining idealistic complex adolescent psyche you have and pull out something new from your dreams. Something brave and grandiose. Something uncynical and passionate. I know you are still capable of it. I saw that sensitive music man interviewed on my screen, whilst his bandmates were lightly taking the piss behind him (I'm sure it was a joke, which as we know is all based on reality). I hope you dreamed on. I heard those early 2010 b/w tracks put on KZbin including "Beast Within" and I was the one who organised them into a playlist which you then deleted! But they were great they just needed more time to mature. Bring those musical ideas back into your mind, repeat and elaborate like a stuck child does, until they are brilliant. You have it.

The song is written for Claudia's voice. It is not fair to this young lady. After 30+ years of hearing her voice, this song could fill churches. It's beautiful. But not the right singer and unfair to put this piece before her. It demands more range and volume.

The vocals seem to be performed in the "cursive singing/indie girl voice" style. Propaganda deserves a unique or virtuoso vocalist, not someone imitating the unfortunate style of others.

xPropaganda did a way better job to make a connection between the past and to transfer it into the future. At least for the vocals of Claudia and Susanne, they're irreplaceable.

What is this? I would never think of Propaganda with this boring uninspired music. Where is the creativity of the unique sound Propaganda once had? The vocals are too soft und sweet and don't stand out. It's like another warm up of what they released with the second album and as we all know... It didn't do well on the charts and confused the fans.
