I LOVE how you demonstrate the whole process, from start (cutting) to 8 days later (roots) to the planting and then the new growing plants! Thank you! I'm off to propagate some coleus now!

I came across this video today, 4 years after it was created but I am glad I did. I was surprised the cuttings rooted after a few days in water. Other videos I saw showed the cuttings placed in soil. Your method is much easier. Nice video. Thank you

WOW that's fast! I've started some from seed and I'm amazed at how fast they rooted. I'm used to waiting months before I see roots. And I always forget about videos I'm in the middle of because something always comes up and I forget. 🤦♀️😆

Nice video. Thanks Khang! What are the basics on coleus? How much water and sun do coleus need?
@KhangStarr6 жыл бұрын
I'm not too sure about different variety of Coleus, but mine can take direct sun in Texas. They do best in moist soil that is soft. Too heavy clay don't work too well for them, their roots need to move freely in order to grow fast.
@doodahgurlie5 жыл бұрын
I can't even keep all the varieties of coleus I purchased this year alive, never mind propagating them! LOL! You have a really green thumb compared to me, for sure, as half the plants I purchased have died this year - this includes all kinds of flowering plants! That's because I watched another channel where I saw the feeding of the plants and I overfed my plants. Live and learn, I guess. I hope to get more coleus as they are beautiful and try again. I love the ones with the smaller leaves you have in this video.

1. I have noticed that I can prop colies, with "pinchings", right into moist (NOT wet!) soil pots, cover with clear plastic, keep in indirect sunlight, they will root in "no time",,, and 2. my experience with several colie varieties, is that they do not "sucker" from the roots....is that normative?

Do you know how long Coleus cutting can grow in water, before necessary to plant in soil? I've seen pics of Coleus cuttings in a clear glass vase kept inside with very long roots. Like the look. But imagine water by itself would not give Coleus much needed nutrients ?. I'm wanting to take cutting from my outdoor Coleus to over winter inside to later take clippings and have many Coleus plants outdoors when it warms up again. (zone 8a). Thank you for your video.
@KhangStarr6 жыл бұрын
I actually have a few Coleus in plain water for over 4 weeks now and they are still alive. If you want to keep them alive in water longer, you must clean out the container when you see sign of algae. Also, you can give them a little liquid plant food to help them along.

I've watched a few videos on propagating coleus. I've seen them just stuck right into the potting soil without being rooted. Does anyone know if that works? I was surprised because I didn't think it would.
@101candlelight64 жыл бұрын
It certainly does, I do it all the time, just snip and place in soil, no need for rooting hormone.

@@KhangStarr Thanks for the reply. I have only recently got into growing chillies as my job takes away many hours to enjoy this hobby. I live in London and my main problem is consistent weather! I love all varieties of chillies but not all are ideal to grow outside. I only get about 3-4 hours sunlight in the afternoon during the summer but rain is a constant interruption as Well as temperatures below 20 degrees...should I consider a greenhouse for hotter chillies as my chocolate habanero and ghost and reaper are just not fruiting? Thanks.
