I’ve successfully air layered Olive trees for bonsai. You need to cut a strip of bark off about an inch, down to the wood. Have a defined edge at the top cut, spray water on the cut and the bark just above the top edge. I use rooting hormone powder, applied with a paint brush to stick to the wet edge and wood. Then wrap in damp sphagnum moss, not soaking. You can then put the pod over that, or just wrap in thick clear plastic wrap and use wire at top and bottom of wrapped ball to keep it secure. You can leave it like that, or cut out bottom of a plastic plant pot and slice open one side, and simply wrap that around the ball to keep out the light. (Essentially works like the pod in keeping the sunlight out to stimulate the roots to take off) works like a charm.

I love that. Sounds perfect. I totally think the step of adding the moss is brilliant... great medium for allowing those delicate new roots.

I would love to try and grow an olive tree in a greenhouse some day! I’m in Montana, so a heated greenhouse would be crucial. We usually see -35° or more a few weeks in the winter. I think I’d be cool to try growing some citrus trees as well. I work on a large organic farm. We had a nursery house and high tunnel. Last winter I helped put up 6 more greenhouses. They have propane heat, and the sides and vent/ fans turn on and adjust through an electronic system with a thermostat. I’m reading through the Bible front to back, currently in 1 Samuel, but was appreciating how great olives are! I never used to like them as a kid, especially black olives, but within the last couple years have craved and really enjoyed green and Kalamata olives. Still not a huge fan of black olives as they taste quite metallicy to me, but I don’t mind them

I've had luck propagating fig trees during the grow season. We didn't use the pods, but a cut water bottle.

YES! I'm going to make more figs this year. The Chicago hardy in the rain garden already has swollen leaf buds! The Olympian ones are leafing out! I didn't even wrap this year. These are fantastically cold hardy.
