IMO, it's not that we need more trees, but that we need less land degradation. Planting more trees won't be enough to compensate for the destruction we cause, it's just an excuse to keep on with business as usual. Planting trees can even cause more harm than good if it's a monoculture or the wrong species. A different mindset is what is needed.

Thanks for the clear instructions. I live near Albuquerque. My neighbor's pinion pine gave me about eight nuts that I found today. I am going to follow your instructions. I have a 15 yr old pinion in my front yard...a male I think, as it just puts out pollin. If it takes ten years for the tree to mature and make nuts, I'm not sure If I will still be here to celebrate that, but maybe the local critters and someone else will benefit. They are lovely trees. I will have a small forest on my 1/4 acre lot if the seeds sprout and grow. Thank you again for your posts.

Thank you, Merrill. I found a green pinyon cone on the ground on a hike yesterday here in the mountains of the Mojave Desert in Southern California. The cone still had 4 fat seeds with no worm holes in them. I hope they are still viable. Now that you taught me how, I'll try to plant them and see what I get. Would just love to have a pinyon in my yard. GREAT food and medicine! Heavenly fragrance. They are wonderful trees! I think I love them as much as you seem to love your babies. :))

One hint of pine nut viability. Use the float test. If the nut sinks it is likely to be good. If it floats it is not any good.

Merrill, thanks for sharing your knowledge. I live in Albuquerque and own property near El Morro National Monument. The drought we had this year brought a pine beetle infestation to the area and killed off about half the forest over the summer (it will no doubt do more damage next year). I found your video because I want to try to reseed the forest (or at least the part of it that I own). The trees there have produced literal tons of pine nuts in the past. I plan to carry your traditions forward in doing my part to take care of the land. Thanks so much for taking the time to share what you know!

I bought my pine nuts at the grocery store a year ago now. Planted them, got them wet and put them in a cold frame (unheated greenhouse). The containers were frozen solid most of the winter. There were warmer days when the would thaw. The will germinate inside the house. It may take several months before the begin to germinate. Another ways is to put them in a zip lock bag with moist potting soil. Leave them on top of the fridge where it is a little warmer. Check them each week. When the radical immerges, but them in a container.

I get my pine nuts late in the fall. I plant a pound of nuts in three 1020 germination trays. The seeds are thickly planted. I have them in a cold frame the rest of the winter. They are frozen most of the time, but in the warmer days they may thaw during the day and freeze again at night. I have them covered so birds or squirrels won't eat them. I checked them yesterday and there is no germination yet. Also, I have germinated them in a heated greenhouse, but the germination is not as good. Thanks for asking.

Do you keep the trays/pots wet all the time or just let them "sit' in the medium with no added water???
@merrilllester4 жыл бұрын
If you live in a frost free area, you can keep them moist out side. If you live in an area with winter freezing, you can keep them the shade. The freezing and thawing will help break dormancy. Usually the rain and snow keeps the wet. If they are outside, you have to protect them from birds and squirrels. I kept mine in a heated greenhouse. I covered them with several inches of potting soil. Dig some up and check on the progress every week. When the root emerges, Plant them in a small pot, the root down, and with the top barely showing. This kind of long, but hope it helps.
@kellyposiviata1664 жыл бұрын
@@merrilllester Thank you for your reply! I live in Colorado, so definitely in an area of winter freezing.
