Holy hockey puck! John K Samson of the Weakerthans is a former member of Propagandhi from way, way back. I am amazed you found this band. This band has been together forever. IIRC the Magnificent 7s covered their "Today's Empires, Tomorrow's Ashes". This band started in Portage la Prairie back in the 1980s. PlP is about 50 miles west of Winnipeg to give you an idea of how obscure that location is.

Been listening to these guys since the mid 90's. Their first album "How to Clean Everything" is a punk-rock classic and later they diversified their sound and "Today's Empires, Tomorrow's Ashes" is a good example of that.

I've been a fan of Propagandhi since the 90's. Supporting Caste and Failed States are my favorite albums by them. Thier lineup has changed over the decades, as has thier sound. Todd joined on bass, and they got more metal, the Beaver joined, and they got more prog. They are an awesome group. Jord the Nord is a beast on the drums. Check out more, if you dare.

He is actually still playing a single bass pedal at the end! (According to video of song anyway) they are very tight live as well

Love that you found them: this entire record is phenomenal (and their back catalog is even better). See 'em live if you ever get the chance.

That was a rather jolly little outing we had there. Plenty of yummy cucumber sandwiches, a few scotch eggs, and lashings of lemonade all round!

Not a bad track, shame about the crappy digital guitar tone but hell, it's 2024 and there's a lot of that about.

Yeah, the lyrical references are a commentary on far right-wing politics. Kandahar refers to the Afghan war, and Ayn Rand was the anarchist darling of the reactionary right.

@@linusfotograf not really, though some libertarians have adopted her (while ignoring her darker side). She was an Objectivist - her own philosophy which pushed an amoral, aetheism-based and anarchistic view of government much like similar movements which were current in the lead-up to the Russian Revolutions of the early 20th century (she, of course, was Russian). While she presented a milder public face, she brooked no divergence from her doctrines within the Objectivist movement and pushed out anyone who dared question her tenets (including former lovers). Basically, Objectivism envisioned a Darwinian, dog-eat-dog form of utopian "capitalism" and social development, unencumbered by government oversight or regulation - which indeed is why her books hold great appeal to many on the far-right and some Libertarians who argue that "government is the problem" regardless of the past history of this country, as well as that of other nations where breakdowns of governments have not produced general prosperity or welfare for ordinary citizens.
