If you have'nt listened to the band Japan and specifically the two albums Gentlemen Take Polaroids and Tin Drum. I highly recommend you do. Richard Barbieri, David Sylvian with the help of Ruichi Sakamoto create /coax the most sublime sounds and tones from a Prophet-5. Especially listen to the song Ghosts.....ridiculously beautiful.

Nice first video man, and some nice tips.... I have a rev 3.3 (with the Rev -1 mod) and I've always appreciated the Sustain pedal for being able to do the EP trick you mentioned. My favorite sound trick is done by taking the the 2nd VCO and using it as an LFO to Poly Mod the PW of the first VCO with a triangle wave that tracks the keyboard to vary the PW for every note in a chord. Gives the sound an organic vibe and some real nice interplay chording. These are things that modern synths can do, but the P5 does them instinctively because of the voice architecture so it's great to take something from the P5 and apply it to a modern workstation, like routing the sustain pedal to the release time and not the sustain gives a way better EP effect. On most modern workstations, the sustain pedal is automatically mod routed to the sustaine level, so you have to max out the envelope delay time while pysically sustaining a chord, zero level the sustain (not always necessary but just in case I usually do it) and then mod-matrix route the sustain pedal to the envelope release time.
@synthshapes2 жыл бұрын
Oooh yes. Polymod must have been a game changer back in the day when it was first introduced! I think you're right though. I need to mess with using it on the pw more. I usually use it as freq or filter and often forget how cool pwm can sound (especially with key tracking) I'll need to give that a go. Thanks for the tip! Also super jelly of that rev 3.3 :)

I love that sound
@synthshapes2 жыл бұрын
Appreciate the love! I think the main difference is that the P6 doesn't have the ability to soften the noise modulation. What I mean is that on the p5/10 you can blend it with the actual lfo shape to make it nice and subtle. On the p6, you can't because to do noise modulation -- you have to set the lfo to random with a speed of 100% and it sounds "OK" but unfortunately I can't get it to sound organic really. It is much more aggressive imo.

Great question! I think they both do an excellent job at “cutting through the mix”. The P6 might even have an advantage with a few tricks it has up its sleeve like pan spread, fx, a dedicated sub osc, and a really nice analog distortion that I love for leads. Where the P10 outshines the 6 imo is just how soft you can get it, which says a lot because I think the P6 can get rather soft sounds easily. Maybe I’ll do a video soon explaining what I like about both and how they differ for me personally!

I made it myself. I have an entire bank that is dedicated to these sorts of patches. Maybe I can do some tutorials on them in the future! I do think the P10 is worth it over the 5 if you’re wanting to utilize patch stacking or split patches. Even still I feel like it’s only really worth it if you’re wanting to do a lot of two handed stuff or are approaching the prophet from a pianist perspective. If it’s strictly a studio synth and you are layering in the daw rather than writing on the instrument itself, the 5 itself is perfect!

I find useful To choose the LFO’s dependent/ determinant on the mark of exact drop of wave shape cycle to express the desired multiplication or phase modulation. at the end of the cycle… Pan Delay: Saw from a slow .06 ~ 1.00 ~ 1.83 Hz LFO Frequency phases I like can be at: 2.75; 3.75; (0.06 ~ 0.07 single wave cycle)on Tri can be useful for Pitch and Amp) Other Single Wave Cycles: Random: @ 0.12Hz Square: @ 0.04Hz ~ 0.06 Hz Pulse can inherently be utilized as a CV signal and thusly modulate (ie. LFO, Envelope) to perform different tasks. Try programming a Calliope! A cross between a bowed String; Organ; Flute; Piano in one Flute in Bass Register are great for ForceField or Tesla texture. Whenever I learn Of a new modulation matrix routing pertaining to a vintage or new synthesizer… All Saws or all Sines are great for ghostly patches…

I've been wanting to know, maybe you can tell me - I'm considering getting an expansion card for my Prophet-5 so it can use 10 voices like the P10. My question is... is the 5 voice / 10 voice / bi-timbral stuff something you can save per patch? Or are these global settings? So, for example, if I want preset 1 to just have 5 voices, and then preset 2 to have all 10 voices, and then preset 3 to be bi-timbral.. is that how it would save them? Or would it be like... only 5 voices or 10 voices as a global setting that applies to all patches? Because, personally, I find that a lot of patches are more 'right' with only 5 voices like the original.
@synthshapes2 жыл бұрын
Good question! So to answer it as clear as I can -- the 5/10 voice mode is unfortunately a global parameter. It will make the synth operate that way across all presets (including split/stacked presets which then only gives you 2 voices stacked with an awkward outlier, or an awkward split where one preset has 2 voices and the other has 3). There is sort of a "work around" for this where you can double up all the voices. This is called Poly Unison mode. and it basically takes 10 voices and doubles them across 5 playable notes at a time. This mode can be saved per patch allowing you to have that P5 limited voice stealing effect, but unfortunately in some cases, at the cost of the tone being thicker than you might want it.
@synthshapes2 жыл бұрын
Bi timbral patches work interestingly as well. These patches whether stacked or split, are indeed saved on a patch level. However, you have to be careful because they contain two patch layers and one of the layers must be saved as a regular patch in a different slot. Basically when you create a bi timbral patch, you are editing the primary layer ON that patch, but the sub layer would use an existing patch saved somewhere else. So if you create a stacked patch on preset 111, layer A will be whatever settings you want saved for 111, while for layer B -- you will select a different patch like 112. If you change any settings on 112, bi timbral patches that are using 112 as "layer B" (in this case, patch 111) will now have the new attributes that were just overwritten. Kinda confusing but it makes sense when you are using it. You can hit the preset button on a stacked or spit patch to view what preset you are hearing as that patch's "layer B" I like to organize my presets by having certain banks dedicated to bi timbral patches so that I don't accidentally screw them up, but it can still happen from time to time if you find yourself creating a lot of them. Hope this helps!
