This is rental car 121 and today I'm driving the 2019 Nissan Rogue SL with AWD and ProPilot Assist. I've done a full review of the vehicle, if you want to watch that go here:
• 2019 Nissan Rogue SL A...
MORE ABOUT THIS CAR:
+ Year: 2019
+ Make: Nissan
+ Model: Rogue
+ Trim: SL
+ Extra: AWD (top trim level - pretty rare for me)
+ TypE: Five passenger crossover SUV that retails for around:
+ MSRP: $33,785
+ Transmission: Xtronic CVT® (Continuously Variable + Transmission) with Sport Mode Shifter
+ Horsepower: 170 at 6,000 rpms
+ MPG City: 25
+ MPG Highway: 32
+ MPG Combined: 27
+ Fuel Tank Capacity: 14.5 gallons
+ Cost for a full tank: $2.58/gallon x 14.5 = $37.41
MORE ABOUT PROPILOT:
The system has two basic functions. First, when cruise control is set, the Rogue will adapts its speed to match the vehicle in front of you. This includes bringing the vehicle to a full stop if needed (something Toyota's adaptive cruise control cannot do).
It's actually a bit nerve racking to try out of the firsts time. I definitely kept my foot hovered over the break ready to "take over" at any time.
One thing I did notice, is that you can't depend on the car to stop in all situations. For example, the system can only sense other vehicles that are about 25 to 50 meters in front of you. So, when your approaching a car stopped at a red light, ProPilot won't start to slow the vehicle down until you get about 25 meters away. And that's not enough distance if you're travelling at 45 mph or more. Because remember, the system does NOT sense speed limit signs or traffic lights. It only sees the cars directly in front of you.
It does work really well, however, in moderate traffic, when you're following vehicles relatively closely. In those situations, the car will slow and stop for you perfectly, and it's pretty fun to have the car stop for you, because you don't even need to touch the break pedal while your stopped.
You do, however, have to hit the accelerator to get the car going again. At least, I think that's how it worked. I realize after I had returned the car that I had the Auto Hold feature also turned on. That feature allows you to take your foot off the break once you bring the vehicle to a complete stop. It's a great feature...but uhh, sorry I wasn't smart enough to turn it off while I was testing how ProPilot works.
The second feature is steering assist. When this is activated the car will sense the lines on the road and keep you in the center of you lane. It'll even go around gentle curves for you. It's not perfect though. For example, this has a curb on the right side of the road an no yellow or white line and the system didn't until I got back on a road with lines on both sides of the lane. The lines also have to be pretty crisp. Older roads with dirty or faded lines gave the system a bit of trouble too.
Also, you have to keep a hand on the steering wheel at all times. And not just resting you hand on the wheel, you have to give the car a little feedback, moving the steering wheel kinda gently as you drive. Otherwise, with a few seconds, a warning will pop up in the gauge cluster, and a few seconds after that the car will start beeping at you. And if you ignore THAT, well then the car will start brake checking you. I'm guessing to help wake you up if you've fallen asleep. And then AFTER THAT, the car will emit a siren type noise, turn on the hazards, and slowly bring the car to a stop in the middle of the road. It's actually quite impressive to watch. Let me show you again from start to finish.
So, all in all, this is a pretty fun system to play with. It's not perfect, but it does give you a nice taste of what's to come. Because I have a feeling that sooner than we all think, our cars are going to be driving themselves.
Anyway, that's it for now. Thank you so much for watching and I hope you join me next time when I rent and review my 122 rental car. I'll see you then.

Another awesome video and good real-world commentary about these semi-autonomous systems. Just came out of a new '19 Camry with only 900 miles from Hertz.... 😎👍

Thank you for doing this. I bought a car just like this one. The Steering Assist is nice unless you are on a very curvy road at 45mph or above, in which case the Steering Assist cannot sense and adjust your trajectory quickly enough. In these cases your car will cross the line to about half the width of the car, and then suddenly jerk itself back into your lane. That is really unsettling! Steering Assist is good only for long stretches of well-marked straight or nearly straight road. It's nice to have then, and in that case Steering Assist along with the automatic braking system will usually safeguard you if you are distracted for just a few seconds.

I can’t wait to try out a system similar to the Pro Pilot Assist. And you’re right about other cars doing things differently. Some with your hands off the wheel will just disengage with little warning but don’t slow the car down and others I believe Tesla will bring you safely over to the shoulder and GM cars too and call OnStar for help.

It also does not make up for wet conditions, where you would maintain your distance a bit more than in dry conditions.

My Audi also has ACC with stop and go functionality and I found out that it will automatically follow the car in front of it after a stop when the time the car itself is stopped doesn't exceed three seconds. If the car is stopped for a longer time I have to "reengage" the Stop&Go Feature by either hitting Resume on the cruise control stalk or tipping the gas pedal. I think this is pretty much the same in all cars equipped with this technology so just try that in the next rental.

Pretty cool tech! My ‘09 Rogue SL is a bit less advanced, the most I have is headlights that can lower the beam, and Bluetooth phone connection, if you can even call that tech. Radio screen is Orange pixel LCD. In 2009!

Clever as it is, this is only a "stage one" attempt at the autonomous car. unfortunately, until the day comes when all cars drive themselves, we still have to share the roads with "human" drivers which will always lead to accidents. Great video though, I'm getting the 2020 Qashqai 1.3L T160 Tekna with DCT automatic (or rouge as it's called in some parts of the world) with pro pilot so this is very informative, thanks!

That warning system reminds me of Demolition Man for some reason.

I wish my 2019 Altima SL would stop further behind stopped vehicles ahead. Also I would like for it to track a little further away from the center line (left line). I have to fight with it when it steers my car too close to the center line. In the future the intelligent driver assistance will work much better but now they do OK sometimes, not great. It would be a bad mistake to count on it but it might work when you need it, but it might not. It is far from perfect.

Just stick a 32-oz Gatorade in the lower right-hand portion of the wheel it thinks that you are actually driving and have weight on it it will remain semi-autonomous permanently

When you mentioned disappearing white lane dividers, I thought about how are these self driving cars gonna be able to handle it? And what about in heavy rain, or snow when the white lines are not visible?

All stop & go adaptive cruise controls disengage after a few seconds of inaction; usually 3 seconds. After that time you have to re-engage the cruise each time.

You can actually press Rev+ button to start from the stop, instead of hitting the gas pedal. On cruise control.
