I agree completely. It especially annoys me when they are just blue, red and white over and over. Unfortunately, I think the reason why most governments go for extremely simple designs is because 1) They are looking for something anyone could imitate easily and 2) It is cheaper to make simple flags, especially if you are a large and influential nation that needs to make a lot of flags.

I wonder how the 2015 New Zealand flag proposal would look if the black were to be replaced by blue. One thing I like about it is that it reflects the British heritage with a homage to the Union Jack and the Maori heritage with the design of the scrolls in that homage. That is a very positive aspect to this banner. It also maintains the Southern Cross that is associated with both Australia and New Zealand.

Hungary, as far as I know, had a period (as part of Austria-Hungary), when they also put a coat of arms with angels on their tricolor.
