ProRes is here before Apple's update thanks to some sneaky work from the team over FiLMiC Pro. In this video, I've had some time to shoot and edit some sample footage and these are my thoughts. Does this feature really improve the quality of your iPhone footage?

Thanks for your feedback everyone! I've come to the conclusion the compression was a little too much on this video... I've gone ahead and re-uploaded some footage with a higher bitrate. So if you're keen to see the ProRes footage unedited by itself, you can find it here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mHK9mH1jabxja9E

Im not sure but your entire vid seems somewhat blurry to me. And I just watched others ProRes vids and they were excellent quality. And for reference I am watching 4K on my MacBook Pro 16 inch and my wifi is excellent.

Hmmm... interesting. I've just had a look in 4K and I think it might be the compression that's killing it. The brighter scenes seem good but the shadows are getting crushed for the darker scenes. I might see if I can put some on a Drive link for people to look at!

Yeah idk why either. The other KZbin videos don’t look bad at all but some of your shots look like it has a low bitrate. Maybe KZbin did some funny stuff with your upload.

@MattQuattro Nice video! Indeed, looks like KZbin encoding has been pretty aggressive, as I've seen other videos with ProRes samples and they were super clean and with basically no compression artifacts at all.

it looked worse then a point and shoot from 2005 ! .. something happened, maybe the uploaded file to KZbin was too big and it did something crazy with the compression.

Hello 👋 Do you know if editing on LumaFusion on iPhone 13 pro is a good idea with ProRes files?
@MattQuattro
@MattQuattro 2 жыл бұрын
I would say yes and no. LumaFusion is a great app and I’ve enjoyed the editing I’ve done so far. But keep in mind when you transfer ProRes footage, it will effectively duplicate it into its own storage. So if you shoot 50GB of footage, you’ll end up with 100GB of storage used on your phone when you start editing it in LumaFusion. But it works!

Something is up with your iPhone samples. Your actifacting is over the top. I have seen prores uploaded to YT and it was not artifacting at all in the same conditions. Something is off with how you rendered it, or possibly saved the files. If you saved to camera roll via filmic that could be the issue, not sure but I don't feel your footage represents the lot of what I have seen. Just an observation.
@MattQuattro
@MattQuattro 2 жыл бұрын
I don’t disagree with you Preston! I’ve transferred these files directly from FiLMiC but I think what it comes down to is using the ultra wide lens with a maxed out shutter in these bright daylight conditions. I’m currently getting in a variable ND filter and I want to see if this will make a difference.

What the are bitrate/filesize differences between 1080p and 2160p? Also I've never even heard of filmic pro 10bit mode, I'll have to look into that. I don't use filmic pro. I wonder if that would work on my current iPhone 8+. I thought it would just be one flavor of ProRes, I don't realize you could shoot proxy, HQ, etc. Is it the same ProRes as other cameras get or a specialized version for the iPhone? We need more technical details and comparisons between different versions/resolutions/framerates/bitrate per bitdepth,/etc.

@@MattQuattro footage looks nice... some people complain about the file size.... so do just like you would if you are shooting with a Blackmagic 6K Pro... you use a 1tb SSD for the footage.... I just tried this last night.... iphone 13pro max... use the USB adapter... plug in the Samsung T5 SSD card... After you shoot the footage you open the " file " app then from the pictures app you send the footage to the file app and it will load the footage to the T5 SSD.... now you just plug the T5 into your computer for Davinci editing... works perfectly.. also... you can shoot two different ProRes formats.... with the Iphone 13Pro it will shoot ProRes HDR and if you use the App called Filmic Pro you can shoot in just ProRes or 10bit Log.... the 10 bit log footage colors very well in Davinci.... the difference between the ProRes HDR and the Filmic Pro ProRes is easy to see... latter, good luck

Nah, as someone who uses about 18tb of phone footage a month, no need for a port. iCloud, Airdrop, third party photo app sharing over WiFi. We use iPhone 13 pro max to shoot student videos, not Prores but no need for lightning, plugs are dated, we send directly to a 20tb external drive at around 900mbps

@MattQuattro
@MattQuattro 2 жыл бұрын
The default camera app tends to shoot in HDR by default meaning it would be harder to clip those highlights. But my point was the dynamic range is limited, meaning if you want to expose some dark leaves against a bright sky, you have either over-expose the sky, or under-expose the leaves. Hope that helps!

@@MattQuattro if you’re going to compare this to,something costing thousands of dollars that does nothing other than take pictures and possibly video, then yes, the dynamic range is limited. But it’s actually not in most practical situations. Only when attempting to show dynamic range limitations.
