Many of us dream of one day owning a really large reef aquarium. Whilst I definitely think it’s worth it there are some serious downsides that comes with having a large system.

I can't imagine this conversation, "Hon, I'm thinking of buying a $10,000 reef tank."

You just talked me into getting a 180 gallon instead of a 150 gallon the your right width makes a huge difference with scaping my 75 gallon is the same width as a 150 and that gives you only 18 inches to work with

That’s awesome. Yeah, it makes such a difference in terms of options for scaping. Happy to hear that I influenced you in making a good call :)

You have in my opinion the #1 nicest tank all over social media (fish set/coral layout). Too bad and can't "copy-paste" in real life 🤣

Thanks! Yeah, that’s on the list of planned videos. Short answer: it’s awesome and I wouldn’t run a tank without it

I have always saved a little doing sectional lighting and having a SPS zone so I have an Kessill A500X and a LPS zone 2 Quanta pros etc, I have a 180G and its still a pain to work on it has small access holes from the Acrylic base and overly aggressive clownfish that bite your knuckles and twist and go back to the same bite over and over.

That’s definitely an option in terms of lighting! Even a 180 can be a challenge depending on layout. If I ever were to go bigger I’d definitely have the tank as a room decider to have access from all sides.

@@viking_reefing I did it as a kid 20 years ago with metal halide and CFLs also on a 75G. But the 180 is a peninsula in my living room so its a room divider for the hall way. I put the canopy on it for light spill but cut the back and top out for access and heat and have the lights hanging from a board suspended from the ceiling. But yes a 180 was huge to me then after a year it doesnt look as big.

Big tanks are the best but are extremely expensive. I agree with your argumentation's 😉.

Indeed they are but if you can spring it well worth the investment :)

Im having a hard time understanding this “things happen slower in a large body of water”. Everyone says it but i don’t understand how it can be true. With the exception of temperature fluctuations, it must all be down to bio load. The more things you have to add in comparison with the water volume, the faster things can change. A wall to wall sps 1000l tank will have things happen faster in terms of chemistry than a 100l tank with a single stick

It depends. A large water volume has the potential to soak up a lot of nutrients, pollutants and the like before the levels reach anything critical. Same thing as if you happen to overdose alk for example, the situation will be critical in a small tank almost instantly but it will take a lot to really throw of a 2000L tank
