Also your tank still has velvet. If you add any new fish they will just get velvet and die
@andycx27 күн бұрын
You can't manage velvet mate. You never quarantined your fish and you paid the price it's that simple. Not qt'ing and treating every fish before they go into your tank in a system like yours is madness.
@viking_reefing6 күн бұрын
Well, I obviously did for some time as nothing wet had been added for a good while. However, it’s not a long term solution I completely agree. Peroxide can wipe it out on a long enough time frame. I’ve seen it first hand with friends and in one instance it was verified by dna analysis. All fish were quarantined for the past two years.

How many Mg/Hour do you set of the input? Also, do you run ozone only at night time? Thanks
@viking_reefing5 күн бұрын
It’s set to full blast. 200mg/h but it’s controlled by my Profilux based on the pro reading. It runs regardless of time if my pro drops below the set point.

@@viking_reefing I absolutely agree with you! I face the same problem as you. My ozone machine is switched on and off by Apex. My ORP has never been able to increase to target (380-400). Because the ORP will decrease every time you change the water, and it will take time to increase. I found that the ORP of my fish tank did not increase from 3am to 8pm, even though I had opened it at 200Mg/H. Also I found that when I run ozone it has a negative impact on my skimmer operation (BRS also mentioned this). So now I will only run ozone from 8pm-3am. I'm looking for a way around it. Anyway, thank you 's reply.
@viking_reefing5 күн бұрын
@@forsongonly2909 huh. My orp stays relatively steady at 370-390. That’s with automatic water changes throughout the day. I also don’t see any effect on the skimmer…perhaps it might be improved somewhat. However, I do see major differences in baseline orp if you keep detritus out of the tank or not. If I slack on removal the ozone generator has to work a lot more.

Viking Reefing, sorry for your loss bro, i hope u read this one, ive had 2 velvet experience before. And peroxide beat it. The one thing you did not mention is that, when you dosed peroxide, did u tape off all the dosing tubes with black tape? My experience was i dosed peroxide every 3 hours and from the bottle all the way to the last portion of the dosing tube. It was all taped with black electrical tape. Cause peroxide effectivity is gone when light hits it. Hope this help.

Thanks bud! Yeah, I came across that in my research. Luckily where the doser sits it’s basically dark 24/7 so I don’t think that light would be an issue. Also, I tend to use RO tubing for my dosing lines and that should shield it from what little light there is :)

I’m so sorry you experienced so many losses. I’m preparing for my new tank build and one area I have yet to decide is whether or not I should run a UV sterilizer. I was wondering if you had been running a higher flow to control algae or if you were running a low rate to help limit parasites/fish disease? Your tank is always so pristine. I will be setting up a QT and treating all my new fish before I put them in the tank. I’d like the uv to help eliminate the ugly new tank algae’s so I would run it at the appropriate flow. I also see merit in reducing the rate to help keep the fish healthy. Do you like doing one or possibly both and what’s your plan of attack going forward with the uv? Do you think it’s sized big enough? Thanks for sharing. You’re way too good at what you do! You’ll be back thriving very soon. Thanks for sharing all of these realities. The voltage issue is a scary one. I’d hate to put my hand in one day for the very last time due to a faulty chord. I’ve heard of a horror story or two related to heaters in the sump electrocuting the owner. Lets hope this was a very rare occurrence. I have 6 Jebao powerheads and a Jebao return pump for my new build. I hope they all serve me well. I tried to be efficient with them and allotted my budget moreso for the lights, the skimmer, the roller mat, the rock, and the tank, stand, and sump are all going to be spectacular. I’ll have to keep you posted when I get it going, hopefully in another month or so.
@viking_reefing21 күн бұрын
I had it running for parasites with a relatively low flow of about 1800L/h. My unit is 110w which is in truth a bit undersized. 180w would be ideal. I’ve wanted to hook up another 110w unit but I can’t figure out a good way to do the plumbing currently. If I were you I would definitely get a UV and size it correctly. 99% of reefers vastly undersize their units.

Sorry for your loss. The Velvet is still dormant in your tank, and waiting for the next opportunity. If i were you, i would remove all the fish and treat them. Leave the tank fishless for 76-80 days. Imagine to fill the system up with fish again, and the Velvet came back.
@DJDDstrich22 күн бұрын
This is absolutely critical. His tank is still in its death spiral, and it's only going to take another stress event to cause another wipe out. :( The fish need to go into copper treatment, and the tank needs to be fishless.
@viking_reefing21 күн бұрын
There’s some decent enough evidence that prolonged h2o dosing can rid a tank of velvet. I will continue the regime and confirm with a aquabiomics test. A friend of mine went down the same route and after a few months there was no genetic traces of velvet left to be found :)
@DJDDstrich21 күн бұрын
@@viking_reefing The problem is that what you've said is highly anecdotal. Whilst peroxide dosing is useful, there is a high likelihood that you aren't dosing enough to get it everywhere or if you are you're effectively killing your tank in other ways (as you've well seen with some of your corals). Its also a stressor itself, so you may cause even more problems on top. You also can't just run DNA tests for its presence - One of the key lifecycles of Velvet for example is that it can fall to the sandbed. And of course can exist on the fish themselves. Taking DNA tests of water is really pointless. The only real fact is this: To know and be sure you've removed velvet you must take the copper quarantine + fishless tank approach. Anything else is guesswork - And hey you might be fine, like your friend! But if in 2 months when the next stress event occurs and you lose another 50% of your fish, you'll know why.
@giannisk.91621 күн бұрын
@@DJDDstrichDNA tests of water aren’t “pointless.” Organisms release traces of DNA all the time. If you were to go swimming in a pond for a few hours they would find your DNA in that pond.
@DJDDstrich21 күн бұрын
@@giannisk.916 I understand the point you're trying to make. But on the specific topic of "is there definitely no velvet in my system?" there just isn't a test you can do to answer it with high confidence.
