The warnings my teacher gave me and other classmates right before graduating. 1. Make sure you get insurance, because you will come across someone who will try to sue you. It won't be anything you do. These people are the type of people who will try to sue someone who saved their life by performing cpr on them that saved their life. This is why the good samaritan law was passed. 2. Some companies will try to take advantage of you. Overwork you. 3. Some companies will expect you to give massages to clients that are contradictory (clients that should not be giving a massage.. clients that a massage can even be fatal to), because they are only in it for the money. I've had this happen to me. Of course I denied giving the massage. My advice Don't become a MT if you are grossed out about touching other people's dead skin and sweat.. Some people need to to learn how to exfoliate. You will come across people who are so relax they might pass gas.. one minute they are snoring the next they pass gas, and as professional you pretend it's nothing and finish the massage. Lol. Funny but true.

If you are starting out and maybe can't afford insurance (I'm not sure what the rates are either, newbie here) is it realistic to have a waiver that they are getting a massage at their own risk you can both keep a copy of?

Pros: 1. Qualification is fairly fast to obtain (at least 9 months.). 2. Flexible shifts. 3. Involves movement rather than sedentary behaviour. 4. Work environments are versatile. Cons: 1. Be available when everyone else is available (working night shifts/ weekends/holidays). 2. Labour Intensive. 3. Benefits are most likely unavailable. 4. Salary is a personal responsibility (IF self employed) .

I recently graduated massage school and found being a male can be a con...initially. It’s a pandemic now and that hasn’t stopped me from looking for jobs. When I browse, some postings say “prefer females” and I feel discriminated against. Needless to say, I keep telling myself once I do find a place that accept me being a male therapist, I could get steady clientele over time.

I was scrolling through the comments and saw this. First,I'm sorry you have to experience that but don't let it discourage you! Have you thought about being independent? Start your own business with it. You've already completed the schooling which is the most important part. I hope that you do find something and prosper at it!!💕

I'm considering going into this field. I'm a bio major at a four year college, but I underestimated everything, to put it simply, and am not doing too well. My advisor advised me to attend a different school, two year program, but I don't meet the requirements to attend the program, so I'm thinking of halting school for the moment-if not forever- and going to a two year school where I can go into this field, or be a surgical tech, or optician, or a radiological assistant/tech, or some type of welder. It's quick schooling, less expensive, and the pay is usually generous for a one-two year degree. I considered doing it, but wanted to get out of the house, but since I'm planning on getting a car in the near future, maybe going back home for a year, while working and going to school won't be so bad. I can always come back and get my Bachelor's. I didn't want to. I wanted to get my four year degree in four years, but I know myself and I don't even know what I want to do yet. I'm already behind by a year and a half, so at least this way, I have some work under my belt and if I want to come back to school after a few years of working, I will. But if I'm satisfied and happy with what I'm doing, there may be no point in getting my Bachelor's in Biology. I still want to do it because I love science, I'm just not good at it and fail at everything science related. I need to look at the reality and make some changes. So, here I am, typing accidentally long paragraphs on youtube. I might go into this, I might not. But so far, it seems like a pretty decent career.

I'm in Massage therapy school now. Today was my first day. The job Market for the north-west suburbs of Chicago, it's about 45 minutes away from Chicago, the market is paying a lovely salary. Of course Chicago is a big city. Clinics are hiring, cosmetic clinics are hiring. Wages from 29 to 50an hour. The money is good but, my professor did say if I decide to be my own contractor I must get my own insurance though. I haven't checked out the benefits. I just been looking at jobs and salaries so far. I'm really excited. I do want to relocate somewhere in Los Angeles at some point. I do want to have my esthetician and cosmetology license along with the massage therapy. My goal is to have a spa/salon. I do want to start with an hour job, build my clientele. Save and work on my business on the side until I'm ready to be my own boss.

I have been considering going to massage school for several years now, and just as I was getting closer to pull the trigger, and as my best friend went to school and is now completed his program and doing fairly well for himself. I actually ended up fracturing my proximal phalanx of my pinky finger and it healed with a malunion. I had to get several x-rays and CT scans and I feel like my hand has a lot more information and arthritis already setting in. However there is a part of me that thinks maybe Doing that massage therapy program could actually be better for my hand in someway. Because I am getting more exercise for it. I’ve always enjoyed learning about natural alternative remedies through herbalism as well as essential oils. I know they have different techniques where you can limit the use of your hands and also use other parts of your body like your elbows or even bamboo etc. i’m not sure I have such a good opportunity to go to school in Texas because it’s so close to where I’m at. Plus it’s a very affordable program. I just don’t know if I’m ready to commit to that yet. I would look at doing massage more like a side hustle part-time on the evenings and weekends around a full or part-time job at hopefully offers benefits

Graduated last year and have an opportunity out of state! Of course since we are in the middle of a pandemic I did think twice about having another source of income just in case they shut down massage in that state. So I got certified as a phlebotomist just in case for backup. However, I am so excited! Since the pandemic happened it slowed down the process of graduating and preparing to go work as well. But I appreciate this video, makes me even more excited to go work now and finally do what I’m so passionate about 🙏🙂

Think you could have prepared a bit more for this, but overall this was good in comparison to some other 'Massage Pro & Con' clips. Glad you mentioned the feast or famine thing. If you work for yourself in this profession, you only make income when you have clients; no clients means no income. Also when you work for yourself, there are no benefits; no paid sick time nor vacation time, no retirement plan, no collecting time and a half for overtime nor holidays. You only generate income when you get clients. Additionally, LMTs get solicited from time to time for more than a 'massage,' and you need to figure out how to deal with that; do you turn them away, refer them to someone that you know of that does that kind of stuff, or when you're in a famine stage do you chance it 'cause you need the income? This can be a very rewarding profession, but it's not for everybody.

I am currently in a massage therapy program and I have to say, that hour absolutely flys by for me. I always feel like it's not enough time to address most people's whole body effectively. It can be exhausting. And it can be painful. But proper body mechanics minimize it. And more often than not, I'm energized by giving massage. People genuinely appreciate and need the work you are doing. It's very fulfilling.

I’m 20 and I have no clue what to do for a career path but massage therapy has always been interesting to me. I’m just worried about a steady income but it seems like you can make a decent living off of this career!

I’m interested in the field but few like it’s a female dominated career

It certainly is and I had my doubts about being a male massage therapist, I still have been considering going back but unfortunately I fractured a couple bones in my left hand as I was coaching Wrestling about a year ago and I’m really not sure how long I could last. However I think there are a lot more men in the field and I think a lot of women actually prefer men. My body just finished his school he is 34 years old like me, and he already has like 15 client scheduling every week with him.

Thats is definitely one con as well and I’m a male. I would say she should find a company that will protect her if anything should happen. There are businesses that might get upset if she would report such a thing. Also finding a position that specialize in couples massage it helps that another therapist is in the room with you.

@@akm960 Have you ever had women make sexual advances? I am in mail considering doing massage therapy and I am very concerned about the potential. I am 34 years old so I am a lot older than most I have a professional courtesy however you just never know

@@DanielGennaro To be very honest women(in my experience) are a lot less likely to make those kinds of advancements and if they do its very subtle. As long as you stay professional and set clear boundaries you should be fine. Another about female clients is that some do not prefer to have a male massage therapist(don’t take it personally its just how it is). I was 29 when I got my massage license and first massage job. It was the best decision I’ve ever made.

@@akm960 that is so good to hear my friend. I have been looking into it for several years and I am pretty heartbroken because about two years ago I fractured the proximal phalanx of my pinky finger. I do have good mobility with it, but the joint healed with a slight malunion. So I don’t know, I am mostly doubting myself and whether it will give me more arthritis and inflammation in the long run. Definitely bothers me a little bit but it is not completely debilitating. The school I was looking at starts up next month and I have such a good opportunity to go there because I live so close to it, I just don’t know if I’m ready to pull the trigger yet. I definitely want to combine it with all kinds of other healing therapies if I did such as naturopath a herbalism, Reiki energy healing as well as maybe facial rejuvenation treatments because I like that kind of anti-aging therapies

@@DanielGennaro If i was you I would probably speak to a doctor about you concerns with your pinky. I will say thats one finger we hardly use to massage with plus there is other massage techniques that don’t require your hands that u can utilize.

If you're not attractive, DO NOT waste $20,000! It has nothing to do with how good you are at it, or how good you did in massage school.

Mmmm I think there is a grain of truth to that but not entirely. I think the majority of people do not care what you look like they just want a good massage

You should do a video. I totally believe this and have heard this from other massage therapist.

I could definitely see why you’d say that. People generally would want an “attractive” person touching on them in the manner that MT have to
