I grew up in Albany but I left for more exciting places as soon as I could. When I go back to visit family it feels like waiting around to die. I do like Calapooia Brewing Company, a nice brew pub down by the river.

Paper mills create all kinds of heinous pollution that can take years to mitigate. I would not be surprised if what you were smelling by the river is from the lingering residual. Here in Stockton, the old paper mill was in the same area as the sewer treatment plant. It was hard to tell where one ended and the other began.

You might be right. I haven't noticed the stink for a number of years now. The International Paper Plant by Millersburg (north of Albany and next to I-5) was the source of the horrendous smell of rotten eggs. You could tell you were near Millersburg just from the smell. The odor was caused by hydrogen sulfide, which is similar to the worst possible nose-wrenching fart. Albany used to be known as the outhouse of the Mid-Willamette Valley. Depending on wind direction, the noxious fumes could drift over North Albany. But now, there's no apparent stink anywhere along I-5, or in Albany since the plant was closed over a decade ago and finally demolished.

Affordability depends...North side of the River can jump up quick. Downtown Albany within the historic district has a strange named zoning called Hackleman Monteith which is the Cities own made up zone allowing conversion for older homes to multi family and in house business uses.

We moved here because OSU is so close and it’s cheaper to live here. I’d say the best thing about Albany is the historic homes and it’s honestly pretty safe. You are close to I-5 so you can get anywhere in the valley quick and we honestly have most of the stores you need or want. Also downtown is super cute.

I always visit my family there. as I grew up I always thought this town as a dead place but perfect for those who want a calm living and don’t really leave your home much which also perfectly describes my family lol.

Albany doesn’t have to be the right place for everyone, just the right place for people who move there. Sounds like your family does enjoy it which is great. Have you been back recently?

@ for more reference I’m from the Bay Area so I’m used to quite a different style of living but I just recently visited this Christmas, took advantage of the pricing and zero sales tax you guys have. We visited a couple cities like Salem and Corvallis all had their different vibes your state is truly beautiful.

Best thing in Albany is the pho . My child lives there and all the food sucks but Ba’s pho.

So true the food is super bad coming from the Bay Area I felt super spoiled but Rigoberto’s was a good spot that was open 24 hours and was a decent meal
