My husband and I visited from So. Cal. for 3 months last fall (family in town). We were amazed at the kindness and welcome we received. Being from California, we are used to people NOT welcoming us! Even the day before Thanksgiving in a busy grocery store, we had both patrons and employees go OUT OF THEIR WAY to help us find what we needed. Our minds were own. We were sold on the people. The weather is the biggest deterrent for us presently.

We had great high-end fancy department stores here when I was a kid. Stillman's was comparable to Carson Pirie Scott. L.S. Ayres was comparable to Marshall Fields. Lots of smaller high-end shops were downtown. And then there was Murphy's, a 5 & 10 that had everything. The best place ever. All are long gone. There was also a jazz club somewhere on Calhoun Street near the Rialto Theatre. Used to go to movies at the Rialto and hear jazz coming from the club when we were going home. Couldn't wait to grow up and go there, but the building has long been torn down. Miss that too.

Wow. I'll have to write down some of this b/c many people have told me so much information about the history of Fort Wayne and I want to make a video about some of the historical stuff. Like the Nickel Plate and Pennsylvania railroad. Many of our viewers moved away from Fort Wayne sometime ago and are curious about what the city looks like now.

@@LivingInFortWayne I'm fast approaching 60 and was very impressionable as a kid. My family's hangouts were downtown and East Pontiac Street when there were lots of businesses like Rogers Market, the library, a 5 & 10, and a hardware store my dad loved to go into. You'd never know what was there seeing the vacant lots now. I also hung out at the Diary Queen on Oxford, across from Ward School. That building is still there. Those were amazingly fun days. If I remember right, my mom and dad rode the Nickel Plate and Pennsylvania railroad to Chicago to see the White Sox while they were dating. I'll be happy to answer questions anybody has.

@@LivingInFortWayne Fall in New York is so beautiful. Decide ahead of your trip what you want to do and see. New York is a super dynamic city. There is so much to do and see. If you dont have a plan, you may be overwhelmed. Since this will be your 1st time in the city, it's a good idea to hotel and tour in Manhattan. The Hilton Hotel or the Sheraton Hotel in midtown is a really good choice in a really great location. Its near Radio City, NBC Studios (the Today Show), Rockefeller Center, St, Patrick's Cathedral, Saks Fifth Avenue, Central Park, the Plaza Hotel, Times Square is within walking distance. I would not recommend you venture to the other boroughs (Brooklyn, Bronx, etc.) unless you are with someone you trust and who knows NYC very well bc they are very big and it can it can be very confusing. NYC is primarily a walking city. However, the train (the subway) is a very convenient way to get around. If you want to take the subway, I recommend you pick up a subway map from a train station or a store that sells New York souvenirs. If you lose your way in the subway system, ask a subway staff member or cop for directions and information. I can talk all day about my adopted city I'm so excited for you. You will not be diappointed!!

Fort Wayne seems like the kind of place where you’re use to things in life just being ok or good enough to not complain about lol. Or maybe there are complaints but not enough to cause a scene (passive aggressive Karen for example). The size of the city seems great and continues to grow. Which is why I’m really surprised that an investment hasn’t been made to enrich the food, shopping and entertainment scene. I’m sure the venue along the river is nice but the downtown area in general looks like a huge opportunity. It could be what Chicago’s West Loop/Fulton River District is today. Or create an identity and build upon it as a theme for the downtown area. While it’s literally in the middle of nowhere, FW should really pride itself by being a great destination to the next great destination.
@LivingInFortWayne
@LivingInFortWayne 2 жыл бұрын
We are surprised too! “See a need, fill a need” right? There are so many things investors and businesses can bring here and watch that business grow rapidly. The new Bradley hotel, for example, is one of the few “ High end” service/brand/products. Reminds of “The Graduate” in Nashville www.graduatehotels.com/nashville/

We had some Walmarts open 24 hours - no problem - until everyone lost their collective minds over covid. I guess you could catch covid in a mom and pop store or a Walmart that stayed open after 10 or 11. Ergo, all the mom and pop stores went out of business because they couldn't open at all for over a year and Walmart started to close early because those covid germs knew better than to come in during regular working hours. And for some unknown reason, Walmart ceased to have anymore 24 hour stores - ever. It's a pain for 2nd shift workers.

Coming from TN I don’t really consider TX having a huge music scene either…. There’s nothing like downtown or Nashville or Beale Street in Memphis… and living out west the fashion is regular just a bunch of chucks and vans being worn… you rarely catch ppl in designer out here and when you do they stand out… so again this “big city” mess is overrated in my opinion

Memphis is where I resided. Tbh I think smaller cities like Fort Wayne are the way they are by design. It comes off as a family oriented city and that’s thee attraction. It’s not a city that advertises to the youth. It’s a place where big city people move to so they can finally breath and relax here in Phoenix traffic is ridiculous and everyone’s entitled and snobby ESPECIALLY in Scottsdale! lol Nashville is becoming overcrowded because of Californians moving there, all the once was lowkey outskirt areas (Murfreesboro, Mt Juliet) have exposure now and are overpriced compared to what it use to be. I agree with the time zone and not necessary any more and I want it to stop. It was ww2 issue and now it means nothing. Yes the grass grows fast here. I agree with all your dislikes and I grew up here and things are same not changing except bigger potholes, corn fields and churches everywhere

Ummm...apparently you moved here AFTER COVID. Walmart, Kroger and Meijer were all 24 hours before COVID. Us poor lowly Hoosiers miss our 24 hour shopping.

I’m scoping out every comment that mentions restaurants, you also need to try Tacos Arandas El Amish. They have mostly just tacos but definitely very authentic compared to most of the so-so places around the city

Is Fort Wayne a major flood zone?
@LivingInFortWayne
@LivingInFortWayne 2 жыл бұрын
It’s uncommon in FW but, FEMA publishes flood maps and you can look up the area where your property is located. If you are near a stream (ex. The Saint Mary’s River)you will see an "outline" around that stream that maps the flood zones. Here is a link to the FEMA map site. You can enter an address and see the map and any amendments. msc.fema.gov/portal

Upon further research, we’ve been in COVID protocol for so long, there were some more 24/7 retail stores but we’re kind of still operating like peak COVID. Some of the Walgreens, for example, were 24/7

@@peterandrews1335 we’re big Foodies and we still like to have “adult fun” but responsible like home by 9pm. I compare everything to Texas and they have places like Green light social greenlightsocial.com/gls-austin/ Kung Fu Saloon, lostinaustin.org/listing/kung-fu-saloon/ Voodoo doughnuts www.voodoodoughnut.com/ Hopdoddy www.hopdoddy.com/ Torchy’s Taco torchystacos.com/locations/ Franki is from Lubbock and they have stuff like LBK Brewery www.thebrewerylbk.com/ and I think FW has that kind of potential. It’s about the same size as Lubbock TX. One day we’re going to open something like those here…God willing

If you want all of those things Fort Wayne lacks, then move to NYC! I live in NYC and we have all of those things and it's a dump!!!! 1. Everything is overpriced 2. The haves are gentrifying and pushing out the have nits. 3. Because we so much DIVERSITY, there's even more racism and isolation once these groups form their own communities. 4. Hate to break it to but I rather listen to Steve Perry than Cardi B, who I have to listen to 24/7. 5. As far as wishing you had 24 hour stores. We have that as well and because of this crime has gone through the roof!! Fort Wayne Indiana sounds like a wonderful place. I hope they continue to keep it that way! P. S. If you want ghetto and hood, then move on up to NYC, the bronx has all of those things you can't find in FW Indiana.

Ok… so in the intro you showed The circle in Indy. 🫣 I’m skeptical on everything you say. Have you really lived here? Where do you think you were moving to? Northern Indiana is not Texas. I think all your complaints are because you came from a bigger town to maybe a smaller. And your last complaints. Welcome to a small town.
