Pros and Cons of Living in Hillsborough North Carolina!

My great grandfather was Mack Rigsbee, a moonshiner, the owner of the Rigsbee rock house in Hillsborough NC. It's a historical landmark. There used to be a hidden path from the garage to the pool. FYI. Secret info I know. My uncle Wallace told me.

Hi Corey! Thanks for watching. There is a large riverwalk along the Neuse River that starts in Wake Forest/North Raleigh and goes into Clayton. Wake Forest is much more built-up than Hillsborough though.

Chain Box Stores? Really? Sooooo NOT worth discussing when the topic is H'boro. But with that said, for the record, Hillsborough has two - with the area's best Walmart, and the area's least-busy Home Depot. Since I prefer Lowe's, I usually shoot over to the Chapel Hill Lowe's - which is ranked as one of the very best Lowe's in all of NC (& of course Lowe's is HQ'ed in NC, so it's the chain's priority state), as well as only a 10-minute drive from H'boro. Beyond that, a 25-30 mile radius of box stores from H'boro has you adding scads of them, as you're picking up the one's in Chapel Hill, Durham, Mebane, Burlington, & Pittsboro. More than you can shake a stick at, without them clogging up your town with traffic & congested parking lots that are both eyesores and headaches. Also, as you alluded to, "the small town feel" was one of your "Pros", so listing it again as a "con", is a bit ridiculous. And for the record, H'boro DOES have a number of cool bars & restaurants downtown, so the downtown nightlife scene is actually one of it's "pros" & NOT a "con". And despite the fact that H'boro is a relatively "small town", it actually serves up a pretty nice amount of commercial offerings for a town its size. Certainly one of the "pros" for this town is that it still retains some locally-owned small businesses that not only serve the area, but rival some of the best offerings in the state. For example, H'boro has its very own SKI SHOP! Never mind that you're still a few hours from the slopes or that snow skiing is a seasonal sport, C&R Sports is a KICK ASS ski shop! Of course, being that it exists a substantial distance from the nearest ski slopes & that skiing is a seasonal sport, C&R is also a sporting goods store focusing on several outdoor sports. But really, how cool is it for a town the size of H'boro, situated where it is... to STILL HAVE ITS OWN SKI SHOP? Answer... it's VERY COOL! So, what are Hillsborough's CONS? Every town has its cons, & for sure H'boro has some big ones. 1) it's an EXPENSIVE town/area in which to live. Property is expensive. Goods & services are pricey in this area, and your taxes are amongst the highest in the state. 2) the elected officials & the political scene in general are pretty much a joke. And, NOT in the "Mayberry" kind of way, where Andy can be your sheriff 6 days a week & is licensed to marry you on the 7th day. No. going hand in hand with the first two is the fact, that 3) traffic sucks and that 4) planning for its future is & has always been on the weak side. And, it's beyond just being unable to figure the basic stuff out... like the fact that the town is growing faster than it's prepared for. To really put a bow on it, it's more of a kind of "Hey, instead of dealing with our actual problems, let's just order up a few more dozen rainbow flags (at 5 times the cost) & stick them up all over town, & then bury our heads when redneck groups like the KKK come from neighboring rural areas to march in our town" kind of stupidity.
