Here is the top 10 beginner parrots parakeets conures and other birds I recommend! Pros and cons, prices, and some more general information for beginner parrot owners to get you started in your research for the right parrot that fits your lifestyle! Keep in mind, these are simply my recommendations and I'm sure many others have different species they recommend. Thats why I ask all of you here on the birb squad to help beginner parrot owners out with zero judgement! Remember, we were all beginners once so lets help as many people as possible with their potential parrots!
Also note, that just because I list these top 10 parrots for beginners, doesn't mean each and every one of them is right for you. This video is set as a guide and parrots that are generally easier for beginners to handle. Find the one from this list (or others mentioned in the comments) that you are interested in and sounds like a good fit for your lifestyle. Then begin your extensive research for more info on the species! Who knows, you may find your forever companion parrot thats right for the both of you :)
Anyway, I hope you birbs enjoy this super long video! Grab you and your birb a snack, relax, and lets talk about beginner parrots!
Thank you all again on the birb squad for being so supportive and kind to others. In such a toxic world that live in, its nice to be a part of a community where we all can learn and laugh together with as little judgment as possible.

I really want one, but I think my asthma and allergies may be an issue. I am allergic for litterally everything. Including my dog, but I only had to take pills first few months for him, after that my immune system got used to him? Just specifically him not other dogs lol. I think I may spend some time in a rescue or smth to try and see how allergic I will be for them.

Green Winged Macaws and Mealy Amazons are known as gentle giants as well, but Amazons go through a very nippy bluffing period and Macaws have larger beaks. You can’t guarantee that your bird will never bite you. No matter how much they love you you could catch them on a bad day or they could bite you when spooked. A macaw bite could definitely send you to the ER whether it’s a gentle giant or not.

I got a yellow sided green cheek about 7 months ago. I love him! I take him with me whenever I can . He has his own little fan club at the nursing home my Mom is in. He starts hopping up and down as soon as we hit the driveway . As for talking, at home he never stops, but if he is out of the house he refuses to utter a word. He's 1 year old now and has about twenty words in his vocabulary .The first word he said was "okay", Then one day when I got home from work I said "Hi buddy, horw are you and he said "Okay, I want Nutraberry." clear as a bell. You could have knocked me over with a feather! Mostly he just yells "I'm a pretty bird " at the top of his lungs ! '

My first bird was a Blue and Gold Mccaw named Grover. My Gradma was living with us and bought him from a local pet shop, and then passed away about 6 month later and we were stuck with him. Grover is an absolutely wonderful bird and we will love him forever. He is about 10 years old now and we got him at 6 months ish. Since they can live between 50 to 100 years, he might just out live 2 or 3 generations of my family though. Pros: super friendly, never stops talking, says the funiest things with the funniest inflection and the funiest timings, mimics every animal sound on the TV perfectly, lifespan comparible to a human.... Con: Screeches like a pteradactyl, there are peanut shells in every corner of the house, scream for attention if he knows someone is awake and not in the room with him, a perpetual 2yo in the house for the rest of our lives, lifespan comparible to a human, screeches all through the phone call so I can't hear anything.... Quotes: Grover-"Grover want something..." Mom-"That wasn't very specific. What does Grover want?" Grover-"Grover want a peanut." The Roof Repair Guy-"Do you have a pteradactyl in there or something?" Two month leading up to Holloween: Mom-"Trick-or-treat...Trick-or-treat..." Grover-"....peanut?" On Holloween: all the kids- "Trick-or treat" Grover-"...(silence)" Day after Holloween- Grover- "Trick-or-treat...Trick-or-treat...Trick-or-treat...Trick-or-treat..." Now I am living on my own and just got a Parakeet that absolutely hates me. I miss my Blue and Gold BFF.

Parrots should NEVER have peanuts in the shell. There is something called an aflotoxin and we’re affected by them too but birds are small and delicate. It will kill them. All my peanuts are deshelled and roasted to kill that fungus. I know its not as fun to have them deshelled but it could save your birds life!!! Same for wild birds. Never give them shelled peanuts because little babies can choke on them and die.

I have a sun conure and she is the loudest bird I've ever heard. I grew up with an angry old Amazon that was in our family over 90 years. The Amazon was loud but nothing compared to a sun conure. The sun conures also tend to be jealous too. My bird screams extra loud anytime my daughter is in the room, bc she wants my full attention! This was a great and informative video. Just wanted to add my personal experience with a Sun Conure so anyone considering one will know certain types of those birds are a bit louder and more aggressive than others. I love my bird and will never re-home her, but many who buy sun conures don't realize how loud their little butts can be and they end up re-homed pretty quickly (which is no fun for a poor Lil bird). Thank you for the videos! Blessings 🖤

I think the only other species I would look at outside of a Pionus would be a Caped Parrot because I love independence and personality!

Awesome video! For starters, love how you give a lot of love to the budgies/parakeets/cockatiels. I've seen so many videos where people do not give the respect these little guys deserve. Just cause they're small doesn't mean they don't need lots of attention and love, and also time.outside their cage. I also love how you mention so many birds I've never really heard of, especially the pionus and Bourke parakeet. They're beautiful! And now I'm gonna keep an eye out for one when I get my first bird! Thank you so much!

Steetyeets I have one. He’s 20 years old. He used to be kinda loud but honestly if you get him out the cage and play with him enough he’ll respect you. Just be careful of how much you give him as far as treats or petting or rubbing him. I found that sometimes if I rubbed mine or gave he treats frequently. He would make noise wanting more. But they are GREAT birds. Not nearly as Loud as other birds honestly. Hope this helped!

I actually know a breeder of brown heads own one and handled lots of them, their personalities vary wildly from super sweet, skittish, attack bird, bipolar (like my Coco) same story for most poicephalus I'd say, red bellies, Senegal's, ruppels, Meyers, jardines, brown heads. Experience with all of those pois listed, some you can win over with calm kind perseverance, some will never like you.

I have a lovebird and he’s the sweetest and the most loving thing you can imagine. Very very affectionate and cuddly - they’re basically babies with tiny wings. They can be territorial but all birds have very different personalities and not all lovebirds are aggressive or feisty whatsoever - it’s REALLY just a matter of how much attention you give them and how much effort you put into bonding with them. They’re one of the most loyal parrot species and they bond quickly with their human parent and definitely bond for life :) also make excellent family pets - my family loves him to pieces and so do I - couldn’t recommend them more. He’s always watching me and knows the second I leave the room and will start calling me - cutest little birds with big personalities :)

One more thing, Hyacinth Macaws are truly beautiful and I handled one in a bird store in San Diego. Loved it to pieces. Im 5'9" and was very thin back then so my wrists were small. Theyre really too big for your shoulder. the one i handled was very gentle, but didnt want to let me go. Im an experienced parrot handler but really wasnt prepared for the size and stubbornness of this hyacinth. I would get him back on his perch and before i could blink, his beak was around my wrist, completely. Step up on my left hand, then lets go of my wrist. This went on for several minutes. I was pretty embarrassed and im not comfortable disciplining a 5k bird thats not mine, if its even possible. I had to call for help because i needed to go. Just the size of them is impressive.

My true love is the Bourke's parakeet! I have two of them and they are the sweetest, most darling things. I don't recommend them for anyone who wants to snuggle with a bird because they don't like being touched, but they show their love in other ways. My boy is really friendly and can even talk a little bit (though his voice is nowhere near as clear as most parrots!). My female is more standoffish and doesn't like to step up but both of them love to hang around or even on me. They are kind of like cats in that respect; you have to let them decide they want to come to you, but when they do they will show you so much love! :D

I spent many childhood years with companion birds. Budgies to start with. When I was 13, my father gifted a cockatiel to my mother, but the bird took a dislike to her and bonded to me out of the blue. I've been pining for the companionship of a bird again. A pair of gorgeous rose breasted cockatoo brothers almost conned me into bringing them home by being so cute and sweet. I started researching and concluded I don't have the space to properly accommodate them not to mention they can get crazy loud for apartment life. Now, thanks to your video, I have a few other birds to look into. Barred parakeets have also caught my attention for being rather quiet little birds as well as something that is cute and funny. Also, from what I understand they are a little hardier than some which could be good in the Swedish climate.

I really appreciate your time and advice on this subject. I will be doing more research to help me decide on the right bird to adopt as a first time bird owner. I love the majority of animals/pets, because of physical issues I'm not sure if I should get another dog now that my little one has passed. And I don't want to deprive the dog of proper exercise and excitement of the outdoors because of my physical limits and home changes from house w/backyard to an apartment. So I can no longer just open the door and let the dog out on their own for as long as they like, so of all indoor pets I have yet to own and experience a bird, looking forward to the companionship. Thanks for the info/video, your birds are beautiful.

I agree about the pionus 100%! I've had my maximilian pionus parrot since February 1997. She'll be 25 years old in May. She is very lowkey and not easily excitable. She likes to play Simon Says with switching up different whistles where I have to repeat what she whistles. She only does this when I'm out of her visibility. She is independent. She makes natural 'jungle' calls. She loves showers. Pionus are not wild crazy playful. They don't like being on their backs like some parrots. They don't hand upside down from their cage. My pionus, Syd, is very deliberate when she plays with her toys. It is mostly chewing up wood to toothpicks. She loves 'foot toys' she can hold and chew. Pionus aren't really known for the ability to talk. They may learn a few words. Pionus parrots are prone to obesity. I feed my birds (I have a cockatiel too) a pelleted diet with nutriberries for treats. They get occasional people food. Syd has a great appetite. Syd doesn't chew on furniture or destructive to non-bird things. They have tremendous body language to make up for their words. All I have to do is point to her cage and she will go inside. All I have to do when I get mad is to give her the 'evil eyes'. This will trigger her to puff up like a blowfish to make herself bigger. She loves head scratches ut really doesn't like a lot of hands on contact. She is highly territorial of her cage. I have to wrap my hand with a 'birdie towel' to take her off the cage. She will bite. If she is away from her cage, it is never an issue to pick her up. She loves playing with toilet paper rolls. I unravel them so she won't get her head stuck in it. Birds have died that way. I would say the best parrot to 'graduate' to after budgies and cockatiels IS a pionus unless you have little kids. High-energy kids are a stressor since they are really laid back.

I definitely agree w some of her points, I own a budgie (three yrs old) and a cockatiel (10 months old) and am planning on adopting a green cheek this fall. One thing she didn't manage to point out is how moody cockatiels can be, especially when they are younger. I have been told they grow out of it, and I hope that's accurate, as my cockatiel is definitely a very grumpy lil guy sometimes. He definitely has his days where he's better, but in comparison to my budgie, Brockie, he's pretty moody most of the time. Brockie on the other hand is super social, altogether a crazy lil bird and I love him to death. He's for sure a lot more comfortable than the tiel, Axel, which makes sense as he's been here longer than Axel. When Brockie was a baby he was definitely very timid and shy, but at ab age 2 he started to become very social and loud and crazy. Mainly Axel likes to chew on things, my chairs, my window sills, my doors, etc. he's still a growing boy and I pray he gets more comfortable, especially what with the new green cheek coming in just a few short months. Anyways, love your birds, they are so precious, you've done very well with them!

You're great! I'm so happy I found you! I miss my baby greencheek. He died Feb 25th. Pretty close to his 8th bday. I thought he was going to be my first and only parrot since they typically live 20/25-35 years. But I'm really enjoying you and Yoshi. And I'm thinking I'm getting ready to go look for a new green cheek. Do you happen to know anything about them and how they fit in w this whole covid19 thing? I'm not ready just yet but it seems like the virus isn't dying out so quickly. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

If you're wanting a good companion bird and don't mind noise, Sun Conures make wonderful companions. From my experience, they're not as nippy as GCCs and tend to be a one-person kind of bird bonding strongly with one person. That being said, they're so wonderful to have in your life and the noise is so worth having the bond.

A really good larger bird is the Alexandrine parrot -- super loving with proper care, much less moody than the IRN. Linnies are also amazing first time birds. Birds to not get if you have zero experience: Cockatoos, Amazons, Macaws. Not for their personalities, but because they are such emotional creatures and people buy them on the spot without thinking or researching HOW MUCH WORK they take.
