Hey everyone! In this video I'm going to go over why I chose my Green Cheek Conure and never will buy another again! You guys know I love my Yoshikens, but I decided to make this video to not only wish Happy Birthday to my beautiful GCC, but to also give you guys some insight as to what life with Yoshi is like.
Although Yoshi seems like a pretty awesome bird in all my videos (he truly is tho ;)) there are a few cons so to speak that people may find annoying. The last thing I would want to do is encourage everyone with the way Yoshi and I are in our videos, to go out and purchase a GCC (or any type of bird for that matter) without knowing the truth and all the work that goes in with taking care of him.
This video is describing my experiences so please also don't let this steer you away from GCCs either. This was meant to be informative and to let you guys know a little bit that happens with Yoshi off camera.
Yoshi is a fantastic bird but a lot of work goes in to developing the bond we have now. It took many months for him to warm up to me and trust me to even hold him. He can be somewhat nippy at times and especially with people he doesn't know.
Birds in general are also very VERY messy no matter what the size of the bird is. Although Yoshi is a relatively small bird, he is quite the messy boy!
Some things that helped me decide a bird was to sit down and take a look at my lifestyle. Different birds need different amounts of attention and care. Literally every single species is different!
I hope you guys enjoy the video and lets you know more about Yoshi and I :) If you have any questions whatsoever definitely ask in the comments. I will be more than happy to answer them the best I can :)
Hope you all have a fantastic week and don't forget to wish Yoshi a happy 1st birthday!!!!!

I know you are trying to educate others about the negatives and positives of a green cheek conure. But you seem to really not like how he looks more than anything. After all, you said you would get a pineapple conure next. They are green cheeks, just a different colour. So I'm not really sure what you are getting at really? Not trying to be rude or anything, but if you did research about green cheek conures you would have read how extremely messy they are and about the different mutations. Yoshi is gorgeous, Happy Birthday little one. X

Bruh you just complained about all the behaviors and traits of not ONLY GCC but literally almost every other freaking parrot in the pet trade. If you didn't want an unsocialized bird you should have gotten one that was hand reared. If you weren't prepared for how absolutely messy they were you were better off with a passerine or some such. You came off from this video sounding like someone who is subtly trying to vilify these sweet birds for no other reason than you weren't fully prepared for a rather intelligent parrot species in your life.

I appreciate you trying to educate everyone, but these seem like very general difficulties or negatives that can be applied to most birds. I've had the same experiences with my parakeets. They're messy, loud, hard to socialize, and moody just like your little buddy there. Birds are definitely great pets, but do require a certain type of person to keep them full time. :)

Hey, I wanna give you a small heads up as a long time bird papa who has a 3 year old green cheek. Yoshi may end up more nippy for a couple years, normally starting around 2. This is about when they hit puberty. It can last 2-3 years but it is temporary and, if you're patient, you'll get your sweet lil baby back at the end of it all. I can't help but find it a little odd how no one ever talks bout the birdie puberty issues especially considering that their puberty is the cause of many birds being rehomed for the first time. Maybe I should do a video on it. . .

Green Cheeked Conures are one of the nicest birds...they come in all mutations, so keep in mind the Pineapple is another mutation of the Green Cheeked. Also, ALL birds have their very own personality, and some of these little guys can learn to talk really well too. Do keep in mind, if you keep his wings not clipped, he can get out the door and that will be it. Also, be care as sometimes they can fly into a glass window. Good luck with him he looks wonderful. I’m just gonna flat out say it. You genuinely did not do enough research. And it honestly seems like you’re complaining about the “situation” you’ve gotten yourself into :/ no hate at all I just happen to stumble upon this video. How long did you research about green cheeks? And how long did you wait afterwards of researching about them to actually go and get one? I ask because birds are definitely animals that need a lot of thought and thinking going in before you even decide you want one. Avian vets are not cheap and birds in general aren’t cheap. And let me just tell ya green cheeks generally do bond to one person and one person only!! THEY ARE NOT FAMILY BIRDS!!! And I genuinely wish someone would’ve told you that before getting one! Sure there are some exceptions where the bird is still bonded to one person but is well socialized so it doesn’t mind other people. And I’m glad yosi gets along with your family. And the nippy part. Almost all birds can and will be nippy it’s their only defense mechanism so of course they’ll use it when needed. But they know if you’re bonded not to bite as hard, hence why he doesn’t break skin. In my eyes if you’re gonna get a bird you have to know and be okay with them biting you because that’s just what birds do. There are some exceptions but generally speaking all birds are nippy! And that is something you learn over time. I have had conures, budgies, cocktails, cockatoos, African greys, and a macaw. Each and everyone can and will be nippy from time to time. And you having kids makes it a lot harder for you to let your kids play with them. And I will use the word “play” loosely because green cheeks are not family birds and kids being kids can actually make the bird aggressive out of fear. I’m not sure what kind of bird or birds you’ve had before with your kids around but I would say budgies, quakers, and cocktails are your best bet with getting a family bird. pineapple conures are also green cheeks!!! They’re just different mutations! And of course not all green cheeks are the same!

Girl for one, take a chill pill lol my gcc loves my entire family, is very happy, and is absolutely not a problem whatsoever. As you may know, birds are re homed and neglected many times unfortunately because people jump into this commitment waaaay to soon. My goal, was to weigh out the possible pros and cons of having a gcc and my full experience in hopes to lower these chances of an unhappy bird. I see this little things from yoshi as just whatever. however, some people may see them as dealbreakers. thats why more people need to speak out about all the perks of a bird good and bad. youre reading into this and jumping to conclusions about my knowledge of birds way to quickly. my kids absolutely adore my birds and there are many bird videos on youtube with kids playing actually playing, with little birds. please pass your wisdom on to someone that is actually treating their birds poorly. As for the pineapple gcc comment, girl check my pinned comment. its a misunderstanding im totally aware that a pineapple is a gcc 😂

My little green cheek was a little ham but within one month I had him potty trained. You’re right about the flinging of the food but I stopped him from flinging his food by wiping his beek off with a tissue after he ate. He loved to play and sleep with his feet up. The first time I saw this I thought he was dead but that’s the way they sleep. I’m disabled so I was able to spend a lot of time with him but they are a one person bird he would try to poop on my wife if she got to close to me. They have a big personality. The longer you have him the more he will show you affection.

Loud is relative. Suns are loudER than green cheeks (they are different subspecies). Also - every bird has it's own personality and I can see these different personalities at abt 4 - 5 weeks. Some are more timid, some outgoing, some just want to explore and some cuddly. When you pick a bird you should handle and observe the birds. Take your time and ask questions. You think a gccs act bigger? Parrotlets are worse. They have Amazon personalities in a tiny parrotlet body.

If you think the GCC is messy, be glad you didn't get the Sun. They are bigger, and will tend to do the same exact things as your little Yohsi. One tip, don't feed Yoshi any raspberries if you don't want a huge mess that looks like a murder scene. Berries of any kind go EVERYWHERE. But the reason he does that with the grape is that he is sucking the juice out of it and not eating the flesh of it. Mine does the same with apples and grapes, I have a mess to clean up after he gets done with those. And to be honest, all birds are nippy to some extent. My Black Capped Conure is when we are playing, or he want's my attention, or just because. He doesn't bite hard, just enough to get attention. You mentioned their attitude. That is one thing I love about the smaller conures. They think they are just as awesome as the Macaws and Cockatoos and I love mine for that.

Rick Howell I have a black headed caique, I’m disabled and nearly blind. My husband helps me a lot, like cleaning up after raspberries! We grow soft fruit, raspberries, blueberries, strawberries ..... He says Teddy has the white window ledges covered in red juice, it’s purple sometimes with black currant juice or blackberry juice He can be a little nippy sometimes but otherwise very sociable, he destroys everything he can get his teeth into and pushes things off the bookcase and display cabinet! We put a few nuts into a small plastic water bottle which he loves hurling onto the floorboards! I’ve had birds sine I was ten and we feed the wildbirds too, it’s costing a lot of money too 😒😒😀😀😀😀😀

People say "Birds are messy" and - yes - they throw fruit pulp everywhere, so you have to be quick to clean it up before it dries and becomes near-impossible to clean. And yes - they throw seed hulls and pellets and poop all around their cage. Still - I find it much much easier than vacuuming a whole house along with the furniture to get rid of cat or dog hair. At least a bird's mess is contained to a single area. (LOVE this video BTW!!!)

My turquoise gcc was nippy until about age 3. Now she is super sweet and only bites feet because they're evil! I have a pineapple gcc that is Yoshi's age and is still nippy. One of the reasons young greenies bite everything is to figure out what it is, kind of like the phase babies go through when they put everything in their mouths. As they get older they don't need to do that and the biting has more meaning. It usually comes with body language before a bite, so you can avoid it or train them to either temper the bite or not bite at all..

I have a GCC who was bonded with a lovebird for 8 years, then the lovebird died (has was relatively old). A few weeks later I bought another GCC for him. Total disaster - my bird, who's now more bonded to me than ever, wanted to kill the new bird (and I DO mean KILL). New bird went back to the shop within 24 hours.

Had a few birds including a pineapple green cheek conure. He was great. Really smart and really affectionate. Quiet. He would push himself into my cheek and neck for attention and loved being gently petted behind the neck and head. He'd flop onto his back and want to play/wrestle. Ended up learning to say several words, although it was a bit gravelly sounding. Only thing is you do have to clean up poopies often if you let them live freely in your home (keeping in a cage most of the time is cruel), and like all parrots they will love to chew on your furniture and other things.

I found that my sun conures would dump their pellets in their water bowl as a way to make them softer to eat. They would also eat them dry but it would seem like they were just crushing the pellets instead of eating them. So I decided to soak a small amount, about a tablespoon, of the pellets with water and they love it. It seems like they’re eating more, there is less mess in the water bowl and on the bottom of the cage. I also give them the option to eat dry pellets but they will always go to the wet food first. When they were young they both loved sucking the juices out of grapes. So as a way to introduce them to the wet pellets I put some apple juice or crushed grapes in there with them. Hope this helps!

My husbands GCC only took a day to get involved with everyone in the house . Bizzbee is not one bit shy , and we have to tell people to expect her to be on them while their in our home if she's out...…...she just loves people , all people . That being said she was hand raised in a small aviary , so I expect that is why . She is nippy if she doesn't get her own way or if she is angry with us . One trick we picked up is to blow in her face to stop the nipping , and it works most of the time .

I remember when I got to own my first Green Cheek Conure. I grew up owning cockatiels, and parakeets and never really had a strong connection like I did with my green cheek conure. I’d say they are a very curious birds and do bond with their owners. I’d say my bird was the opposite of quiet haha. Whenever I would turn off the lights to go to bed he would start to screeching for absolutely no reason. And he was quite potty trained too, he would indicate when he’d want to go to his cage and fly there and do his business so that was a plus. They like to be around their owners a lot of the time and if you’re eating something they want to eat from your plate too and will nip you to give them some. Also whenever I’d come home and he’d hear my voice or keys he’d screech so I could go see him. I’d say he was probably one of the best birds I’ve had. He also hated feet with a passion for some reason and will make his way down to the floor very sneaky like to bite them.

we have both a green cheek and a sun conure, and lemme tell ya. they are SO different. Suns are SO LOUD compared to GCCs. both can be nippy, but our GCC, Bailey's bites are.... not as hurting. she still breaks skin, compared to our Sun, Skittles, but i like her bites better lol. Bailey was given to our lps because she 'screams too loud', but her loudest screams aren't nearly as ear-hurting as Skittles'. she also didn't like me for about a year or more, then suddenly i can pet her without being bitten, and she likes to cuddle my hand.

I adore my Green Cheek but am glad you put this video out here - there are so many videos on KZbin of conures being cute and I worry about people adopting birds without understanding what living with a bird is like. My green cheek is loud, messy, nippy, and demands a minimum of four hours a day of direct attention. He is a wonderful companion and I adore him, but if you're not capable of dealing with those demands and issues, you should not get a bird.

Thank you for understanding where I coming from through all this. A lot of people hate me for these kind of videos but I really want to open people's eyes about birds. Yes like you, I love my birds to pieces and would never rehome them. However, they are a lot of work and some people aren't willing to deal with it all. To me that is ok to admit that but I want everyone to be aware of it before its too late and their family is unhappy or overwhelmed with this creature they don't know what to do with. Yes conures are funny, cute, and affectionate but those yt videos dont always show the behind the scenes on what it took to get the birdy to that point. Sorry for the rambling its just refreshing when I get to speak to someone that understands I'm not hating on birds I just want to help educate with my own experience. Thank you so much again!!!

Some females can be bossy and nippy and some get into feather plucking. I think the males are a better bet but each bird is a product of its own personality and experiences with people on top of tendencies of the species. Good luck with your future bird! I was thinking of getting a male but it is not necessary. Male birds tend to be easier to bond with for female owners, plus there beak looks like candy corn! I think what is most important in getting a bird is smarts for me, I prefer birds that will take to training fast and are motivated. trouble makers are fine just need to bird proof my room first! Nipping can be worked on and I am ok with getting a few bites in the beginning. Just need a good companion animal and so far they seem best to fit my current life style.

Okay at the end of the vid when you said the reason you wouldn’t get another gcc, even though Yoshi is great and fits your lifestyle, is exactly how I feel. My almost 21 year old gcc just passed and of course I want to get another bird. Part of me keeps saying, just get another gcc bc the last one was so perfect, but at the same time, I want a different experience. And considering my own age ideally this next bird will be my last (I’m a one bird woman). When I got my gcc in 1997 I had never even heard of a green cheek conure (and I thought I knew birds!). But I will always recommend them now to people who are looking for their first bird. They’re just fantastic. (Oh and when you talked about how Yoshi juices his fruit! Looool Kiwi did that too, I’d be like, just eat the damn thing. There’d be little brown apple bits everywhere, they were like boogers. 21 years of apple boogers everywhere.)

I have a 4 yr old pineapple cinnamon conure, he can be bite and draw blood if he wants too. He have a very soft side to him and playful as well. He has been socialised with meeting new people all the time and outside free as well but his wings are clipped. He can be startled and try to fly away, so that's why. I help out people with their birds, if they want it. Some do and need to learn about their bird. Was told a bird was impossible to work with and in 4 hrs I had him outside and sleeping in my hand. It is one of the sweetest parrots I have met and so gentle. Just wants to give love and cuddles. My bird looks like the devil beside the other one. I clipped the wings to help control him at first and gain trust from him. After that, it was easier to clean him up, clip his nails and give him some fresh food. Then the work begins. It takes time for the rest of it. Mine is a natural pain but can surprise people at times, goes everywhere if he can and if he has his way, he would sleep with me. Not a good idea if you move around at night. They go quiet if they are being crushed, why I don't know but mine will not move or bite or any way call out to say they are being crushed, mine, even slowly, just takes it. Not to worry he is fine and I only made the start and never put any real pressure on him. Strange, he will bite scream at a finger poking him or many other stupid things people try with the birds. If anyone knows why they allow to be crushed, without a fighting back or crying out. Since they will bite and scream for other reasons. That's the reason you don't let your bird sleep with you, they can be crushed and you'll not know until you wake up and wonder where the bird is. It has happened in the past with some bird owners. They will bond to you to that point of wanting to be with you always. Mine rides on my motorcycle with me and holds on tight and if I go to fast he will just go inside my jacket and wait until I slow down. It is just training and he grow up hearing the motorcycle starting all the time and outside, seeing it start and then being on my bike and start it and so on. Small but important steps and you can have a great time and relationship with your parrot. They have lots of love to give, just let them. They love to be around people and take it all in and windows can be very much fun for them as well.

@@VictoriaRyann our cockatiel is a rescue, and it is so hand shy that it bites anything and everything. It has been such a long road to try and tame it. We had the 2 parakeets, but the in-laws cleaned the oven near it without knowing the consequences. I'm hoping to get back to a bird that enjoys its hooman time again. We may have to give this cockatiel up, since we feel there is no hope for it.

Me and my friend went to the pet store together and we saw a little green cheek, and he was just the sweetest thing!!! I've never heard of this in birds, but he was LICKING our fingers, not biting, not nipping, but licking. Ive never had birds but I saw him and fell in love. My friend had a couple birds before and loved them, so I was talking to my mom and researching about getting one.

Victoria, Yoshi is beautiful! I wish Yoshi a very Happy birthday. Conures are small, and very intelligent parrots! I've had lots of birds and parrots. I've a Green-Cheeked Cinnamon Conure. I bought her when she was three months old, and January 5th this year she turned five. Although I had no intentions of buying a Conure, I ended up with one! I went with my Orange-Winged Amazon's traveling cage, to buy another Cockatiel. The one I had died, just the day before, and my Amazon was alone and sad, so I wanted another companion for him. I visited the pet shop and saw few people admiring a Conure in its cage. As I joined them, she left everyone who were admiring her, and came over to the side where I was standing at, and kept looking at me. Everyone saw that and said, she had chosen me, and I should take her; don't look at any other birds; it's better when a bird chose you, instead of you choosing them. One of the worker's came and asked if I wanted to hold her, and took her out. As soon as she was out, she jumped right onto my arm. Everyone stood watching in amazement, while she stroked my hair, and face; she was so loving! They all said "please, please take her, don't break her sweet, little heart, she loves you", and that's how I ended up with a GGC; SHE CHOSE ME!!! They're amazing little parrots!! My Amazon and her are inseparable; kissing and preening each other. I reside in a high-rise apartment building with a 10'×5'×8' balcony. I wired it, so that they cannot fly outside, but can fly in the balcony and play. I made a 4' play-gym myself, and kept it on the balcony with lots of toys, so they can play, and returned to their cages whenever they wish. I bought the both of them with their wings trimmed, and I let them grow out, and have never trimmed them again. I want them to fly about and exercise their wings and legs; God gave them wings to fly, and I don't want to EVER take away that privilege from them! I've grown up caring for many birds, since I was eight years old, and I love them! Victoria, if you should Google "Conures", and read about them, also join a few sites; you'd know, so much about them, but your own little sweetheart will teach you a lot. The best lesson learnt is through experience! Good luck and be happy.

I have to say, I love my sun conure. He is featured in training videos on my channel, if you guys want to see one. I need to really do a vid on how to minimize the noise they produce (and yes, you can train these birds to be less noisy, but not completely noiseless). Mango, my conure, gets told to use his "inside birdie voice" and receives a reward for complying. I also don't reward him for screaming for me when I am out of the room. Little things like that can go a long way. I still wouldn't recommend suns as starter birds, apartment birds or birds you want to house with smaller birds, but they are great if they are good fit for your family/living situation. I do applaud Victoria for talking about "the right fit" when it comes to selecting a pet.

I'm very glad your bird hasn't broken your skin when biting, but I guarantee that conures are capable of breaking the skin. Once my conure was grumpy with me while I was talking to her up close, and she bit my nose. I was startled in turn, and pulled my hand away. She couldn't let go in time, and instead of dropping down, she tried to hang on to my nose. Bleeding ensued. It was a painful mess, and I was upset at her for several days. Today, I'm pretty sure it was an accident on her part, but it gave me an idea of what she can do. I'm convinced they're capable of biting much harder than they normally do, but only do so when they are truly frightened or startled. And pinch wounds can be quite painful even before the skin is broken, so there's that.

zu phlos I bought two sun conures last week, with lots of research obviously! They can be loud, but only ever scream when there are people in the room and they want to be let out of their cage. They also scream when they are seperated to try and find each other. I just take them out of their cage when I first wake them up and then from noon to when they sleep. I love them so much!

Hey birbsquad! We are almost to the 1 year anniversary of this video and I have a few things I wanted to say.... First of all, I wanted to thank all of you who took the time to watch this. I know it rubbed many of you the wrong way and this video alone caused an uproar in the bird community. I have entered this community in a completely different approach than most with the choice of titles and my beliefs that do not align with many of you.I still stand by and strongly believe there needs to be change in the parrot world. I appreciate the constructive criticism full heartedly however I do not tolerate bullying. Although yes this content I create is for you, video creators are not the world's punching bag. With that being said, I thank all of you. Thank you for making me realize this is the path I want to take in life. I am so grateful that I have the privilege to spend every day of my life doing what I love. Helping others with parrots as well as raising my own. I have loved animals in general my whole life and now that my 'job' is making content on parrots while connecting with others that are as passionate as I am... Means everything to me. So thank you thank you thank you for those that have provided me with constructive criticism, stood by my side, and believed in me. I can't express just how thankful and grateful I am for everything that has happened to my channel this year. I am the luckiest girl in the world to have this platform so thank you ☺️ I can't wait to see what our future holds for us as the #birbsquad !!! Thank you again ❤️

Thank you so much for the amazing video! I didn’t grow up with birds but suddenly became fascinated with parrots last year. I saw an adorable green cheek conure in my favorite pet store today, and he was hanging upside down by one leg (kinda like a bat). I really wanted to bring him/her home! I found your video very informative, and I really want to bring one home one day! I especially appreciate that you pointed out that no birds are perfect. They’re quite the opposite actually, but that’s what makes them so special. I fully support you in the making of this video. Love ya! 🧡

we have two conures, i have one and my mom has another. mine is super lovey and cuddles and sleeps on me and loves being held and is a sweetheart. then you have my moms...that conure is bitey, not super friendly, super loud. it's so weird the different personalities that they can have :) i've noticed they are both super messy but most birds are and the cage i got for mine really helps with that mess since it has a skirt around the bottom to catch the seed :) they are for sure one person birds, they bond with one person and that's all they seem to love. my bird pepe loves me and my moms bird bobby loves my dad. lol they are unique and fun to have but i agree, they are a bird people need to look up and research and know how much work will go into them to have them.

Teach the bird that biting hard means playtime is over. When he bites hard say OW loudly and put him in the cage. Since being with you is his favorite thing he is strongly motivated to avoid cage time. Also if mine starts biting to hard i can often get him to stop by saying "ow ow, ow, easy, be gentle" when he does back off I reward him. It's a slow process but It's been successful - mostly. He hardly ever earns cage time anymore.

I was working full time away from home during the 1st 3 yrs I had him & it only took 3 weeks for him to bond with me. He is now 7 ( also hormonal 🤬) but would definitely consider another one (yeah, I'm bat-shit crazy). I could totally relate to so much of your video. Especially when he's angry...thinks he's 6 ft tall & bullet proof 😂 Thanx so much again!

They're also a Pain in the Ass! I LOVE my Green Cheek so don't get me wrong BUT He's Very Needy, Always has to have my attention, Definitely Nippy, Bossy, Messy, Can be Loud & Bratty. I also have a Budgie now and I Truly Enjoy the budgie more so. In hindsight knowing what I know now...I would not have gotten a Grn Chk...my exp has been that he's a lot of work, time and energy like I have a child...except this child will never grow up. I wanted a more interactive bird which is why I chose a conure and read up about them a lot thinking they'd be a good fit for me and as far as needing attention I was ready to give my bird that and was excited to! But the level of attention that my GCC needs superceeds what I could ever imagine that many times he's just a pain in the ass! Again I Do Love him and I would never give him up or abandon him I am responsible and I made myself a promise that any bird I adopted it was for the lifetime of that bird BC I know how strongly birds bond with their owners and how devasted, hurt & confused they end up when an owner rehomes or leaves them. .and I can never do that to him or any animal. BUT if I could turn back the clock- I would! BTW if you're ever considering a "Budgie"...my exp with mine has been Great! My little guy is delightful, playful, very affectionate, enjoys my companionship yet can also be independent, very sweet, Extremely Intelligent, and has the ability to learn a lot of words and phrases. He can be loud at times but not more so that an Grn Chk. He needs my attention as *all birds do* but he's also pretty balanced and gives me my space and enjoys his own space as well. I would never have thought to get a budgie as my primary bird BC I thought they were just little chirping birds and not much to them...I can honestly say that I have never ever underestimated any animal as much as a budgie before.... I'm going to eventually get him another budgie friend so he can have a bird companion as he seems to be more in need of another bird whereas my Grn Chk just wants Me. But my Budgie is the perfect little bird...my Grn Chk is also a good bird but just a pain in the ass lol!

I hope to create a pet community where we can all turn to one another to share our questions and concerns without the fear of being made fun of or accused of being bad pet owners. We are all here in the first place because we love our animals. So let's stand together and help one another out. Also, standing up against the dweebs that abuse and neglect animals. Together we can make a difference and I hope we can all work on this together. Thanks again everyone.
