As a cancer survivor, on non-stop treatment for the last 16 years, I am on my 3rd port. At first, I hated my port because I associated it with getting sick after chemo and so each time anyone came even close to it I would get nauseated. It even reached the point where I had to be hypnotized before accessing the port. Now after all these years it has become a blessing. Mine is also very close to the surface (I joke that it's my Frankenstein bolt) and you can even see the line travel up and over my collar bone. It shows with most shirts I wear, but I "wear it" with pride 😉. I just wish they would last longer than 5-6 years before failing, but perhaps it has something to do with the toxicity of the drugs that go through it, rather than antibiotics. God Bless

I may have to port soon, we shall see in a week or so! I have to have infusions at the hospital regularly and we were really struggling to get a vein that would work. I have been ready to port for a while, it would be better than spending 30 minutes almost every time trying to get a vein for an IV. My veins suck :(

My dogs always got crazy after a bath. McKenzie (who was just recently put down) loved baths and would be totally crazy after one. Daisy will only get into the tub if I ask her too. But then afterwards will be very excited. I used to think all dogs did that until my roommates and I got a dog. This dog, named Max, just chills in the tub, and then when he's done he just lays on his towel on the floor.

your first video with accessing your port actually provided some comfort for me, because I just had mine put in January 25. my port will be accessed for the first time tomorrow. which I'm nervous about... I had a port put in do to me having polycystic disease. which mine isn't polycystic ovarian or kidney. I have polycystic disease which is a mutated strain thanks to the mayo clinic

Thank you for your videos about your port care! I found your channel through them when we were trying to decide whether or not to get a port placed. At the time, I had to go in for infusions multiple times a week for POTS, and I had at least one vein blow every time. My port surgery went very well! I think my nurses were more excited about it than I was. I was sore for a bit but it was a breeze compared to my other surgeries. Since then, I've learned to access it all by myself with very few problems. I can administer my fluids at home. It has been the best decision I've made for my health. I do still get kind of squeamish when I think about how the tubing coming from my chest goes to my heart. But I can impress my nursing student friends with it. That's the life with a needle in your chest, I guess. :)

I'm on my third port! My first one lasted 5 years (on my left upper front) but that got fused so can no longer have one on my left side as my artery is blocked by the tubing, my second was on my right (just under my arm pit) and that lasted for 3 years the tubing fractured where it comes up over the collar bone, and my third one I had in October and it is my left upper front and have so far not had any problems! I hope this one lasts a while! Fingers crossed!

I have had my port for 12 years and love it! The only issue with mine is that because I was 11 when it was placed, I have a baby port. It can move when accessing. It usually gets one poke. Last December, I was in the hospital and needed it to be reaccessed after 7 days. The PICC nurse had already left for the day so a charge nurse tried... and tried... and tried... and failed to get it placed. I ended up bruised and sore and caused infiltration by flushing when it wasn't in. The PICC nurse got in in the next day. Unfortunately, I needed an IV because I had antibiotics due overnight. Other than that, my port is great! I go in the hospital about 3 times a year, so it works great for me.

I do the same thing! All things medical interest me as well, so I fall down the medical KZbin rabbit hole all the time! I used to be a medical assistant and was considering going back to school to become a nurse (though I was actually taking a couple classes for fun to improve my acting and musical theater performance skills and was hoping to get into community theatre since singing/acting has always been a huge passion of mine and, as a child, I had dreams of Broadway) before my health spiraled downhill and I became unable to work or even go to school about 5 years ago. People think I'm weird though because my absolute FAVORITE thing to do as an MA was to draw blood and I was really good at it too! Patients that were hard sticks ALWAYS requested me. But, since I'm not able to do any of that anymore, I turn to KZbin to watch educational videos about medical stuff. At the very least, it helps expand knowledge so that I can discuss things with my doctors at a more in depth level.

I love having a port it was one of the best decisions i ever made. Its been over 20 years now and am on my 2nd one. My first lasted over 10yrs. It was being used for iv antiobiotics almost every month, and the problem i got was the skin over the port in the left side of my chest started to die, my nurses had noted the skin going black, and my poor nurse got a shock when she removed the needle the skin had eroded so much that it tore and as the needle came out the port came with it ! My nurse went white and all i was thinking was oh great this is gonna mean a hospital stay ! I was at home at the time so my nurse drove me with her back to the hospital. The port was removed the next morning and had a central line put in temporarily to complete the IVs i needed. I went home with the central line and was admitted to specialist hospital about a week later to get a new port this one is in the right side of my chest and have had no problems with this one so far in 10yrs. Having IVs and blood draws is so much easier for me with a port.
