Loved this!! I lived in Danang just before the pandemic. Just got back - the owner of my apartment where all my stuff was stranded for almost two years, kept everything in perfect condition and would never accept any money from me to cover storage costs. I even got a free month on the apartment when I came back - this is just one reason of many of why I love Vietnam in general and Danang in particular. But I hesitate to mention it because well, er, shhhhh!!!

I am originally from NYC. Been here In Saigon about 30 years now retired. Unless you experienced it... you can't even imagine what Danang was like in the 90s compared with today. And even in Saigon in the early days... no mobiles, no cable, no internet. Calling home meant a visit to the post office and three dollars a minute. But regardless of the time period its all been about people interaction, mostly beautiful places and warm weather. Frankly speaking... I wouldn't dare leave the country again till travel is back without incident for at least a year with pre-covid conditions ie., no tests, no quarantines no questions about vaccinations.

For someone who was in VN in the 1960s and early to mid 70s, the changes are so drastic that nothing seems familiar. If I had my druthers, I would retire in VN, and specically in lower Central VN near Cham towers--my college research speciality. I also speak the language.

Enjoyed watching that. My wife and I were there three years ago for a few nights. Can't remember a lot about Da Nang but do remember walking at night to a bridge in the form of a dragon. And a fantastic beach where we hired sunloungers - next to a bar of course. The biggest problem we had was food. The only restaurants we found didn't have menus in English. Mind you, we had the same problem wherever we travelled in China, so managed to adapt. One of those places we'd love to go back to again, but, unfortunately, with covid and health problems that tend to come when you are in your 70s, it's unlikely.

Yes, that's true: there are very few police men to be seen in the Vietnamese society, compared to Thailand, where they are seemingly EVERYWHERE, dressed in their brown uniforms. Now, this doesn't mean that Thailand is less secure for a tourist. The Police Officers in Thailand have a very different assignment: they are almost like "social workers". Whenever there's a social problem, the Thai's automatically will call the Police, and they in turn have to handle all kinds of socio-economic hick-ups, big or small.

@@danny24042002 Very true. You can easily live for much less money elsewhere in the country. Cost wise, certain Districts in Saigon are like the New York City of Vietnam. Everything is much more expensive here, but you have easy access to anything that you want. For example, access to western food, western products, and the best quality medical care can prove to be a little hit and miss out in the province. However, Danang is an excellent compromise. They have all the conveniences of a modern city (food, products, movie theaters, medical care, airport, etc.) but at a lower cost. You also have beautiful beach and riverside areas there, and fun day trip destinations like Hoi An. I have a retired friend you maintains apartments in both Saigon and Danang. He travels back and forth between the two cities, based on the weather and his mood.

I've visited Da Nang before and really enjoyed it. It was a few years ago but seemed like a holiday destination in some parts as it was near the coast! However, I did think it had a nice mix of working but also relaxing because you could nip to the coast if you wanted to. That's one thing I miss about being based in Bangkok, you can get transport to coastal resorts but it takes a while!

Agreed. A man would never got full of conveniences if they can't speak the language. And once you knew the fundamental rules, it's incredible easy to learn Vietnamese. Vietnamese is about the rules, no irregularities here.

Wow such reduced rents. I had a studio apartment near where you were filming for $400 a month, in late 2019, ground floor no views and no pool. We have booked to go to Nha Trang in May 2022 and our friends have found us an apartment for $350 sea views and infinity pool so hopefully prices won't rise too much by then. Flights from Australia start on 24th April to VN.

I currently pay $340 for a serviced Studio. That means they clean every day if I want, and they pick up my laundry and bring it back nicely folded. Also has a parking garage for the bike, 24 hour staff and security/cameras. Wifi...It's a great country to save money!

Living in Vietnam is great. Did it in 2006-2008, but I had a visa to teach English. How can one work online like you mentioned in Vietnam? What type of visa is offered that would be suitable to do that? I am medically retired and over 50 so very hard for me to get a visa in Vietnam to live. Hence why I went to Thailand. But if I knew a suitable way to live in Vietnam as a retiree (with some possible ability to teach again as a side gig) I would love to know!

Great video. I've been following your channel for a while and have found your videos honest and helpful. I wish you had a video about where to live in Đà Nẵng. I lived in Saigon for 4 years and the only complain I have is excessive noise (cars, construction, dogs, roosters, neighbours, water pumps, thin walls,...). I'm in Phuket, Thailand now and for the first time in 4 years get a good night sleep. I'm returning to Vietnam in a month, Đà Nẵng this time and I'm concerned about noise. Very true! I've lived in Bangkok for almost 4 yrs before moving to Ho Chi Minh City! I'm new here... so far I've found people are kinder and often go the extra mile to help you! ❤ Life's really beautiful.. I love the leafy alleys! And you can save or travel while living a pretty good life. Nightlife is definitely not as happening as Bkk, options are fewer or limited to certain places/districts (I might not have explored all it has to offer yet!) But again, that could be a better thing depending on what you choose for yourself right now..

The main disadvantage of Da Nang: constant noise. From construction work, from food advertisers, from thousands of motorcycles, from karaoke. Moreover, it starts from 6-7 am and ends at 1-2 am. I can forgive other negatives, but noise pollution - No. Danang is not a place where I want to live long term. The city government needs to start regulating this noise.

I think you guys are giving a slightly false image. Don't get me wrong, I think Vietnam is a great place. I will return there as soon as the visa situation allows it. But you don't mention the visa policy. Don't expect to get into Vietnam any time soon without a very good reason. And secondly the rent for appartments you are talking about are Covid prices. You can expect those prices to be double that when things reopen. Still cheap by most Western standards. You are enjoying Covid Vietnam- extra cheap prices and no tourists, it's a little different when tbings get back to normal. But I do agree with you that Vietnam is a great place to be.

3 more years, I will be retiring at age 55 with around 6k pension per month. I came to the US at the age of 16, went through college, and have been working for more than 25 years. Plan to go back to Danang, my childhood and birthplace, to retire with half a year there, and half a year here in the US. Hopefully, things will be all ok by then.

Definitely I recommend denang, was there a couple of times, had an excellent dentist and enjoyed great variety of Western food native food, and rented a cheap scooter, that is your freedom, or a hazardous aspect I intend to go back there, but I have a question for readers here.... Now I am currently on dialysis does anyone have any idea if PD supplies are readily available or how much planning ahead I might need any answers? BTW I think many young women here are more friendly, and More Beautiful than most countries 🙏🙏

Vietnam is a long country. It's weather is pretty diverse. Everything is relative, compare to where you are it may be hot and humid as hell, compare to Thailand and other SE Asian countries, it's not that bad, especially in Da Nang.

To "complain" about the climate is pointless as there precious little you can do about it. I'm merely stating a fact. To describe the weather as "not humid at all" or "mild" is being disingenuous and misleading. Da Nang and VN in general have plenty of positives but the weather, for the most part, is not one of them. Peace ✌️

So the guy that appreciates his life there embellishing about a climate that 100 million+ people, including hundreds of thousands foreigners themselves, that can put up with and many actually enjoy is "disingenuous and misleading". Not to mention there's a small beach nearby. But you who lived there for 7 years saying it's "too hot or too wet", ie not inhabitable or practically uninhabitable, a climate (not only specific to VN but also in India and Central and South America and Caribbean) where we Westerners had colonialized for decades and if not for the fact that we were kicked out we'd have stayed there for decades more, is not embellishing?
