One of the reasons I picked up a 2023 40th 4Runner is because I truly believe the 2023 Tacoma and 4Runner are the last of the greats!! the new models are 4 cylinder turbos with batteries, no thanks to all that tech-we all know the more tech that any auto maker puts into their vehicles the more problems they will have

Yup I regret selling my 2022 TRD Off Road Premium. I drive for Uber/Lyft and getting 12 mpg was a little expensive on gas when Costco had it at $3.86/gallon. Now I drive a Tesla Model Y, I’ve had it in for service 4 times in the 4 months of owning it for the A/C. I’m going to Lemon Law it and get a 2023 TRD OR-P.

I bought a 2019 TRD pro I use as a city cruiser in Chicago. When the weather is bad there’s no other car I’d rather be in. Thing is the most solidly built car I’ve ever owned not to mention I don’t put a ton of miles on it and can literally still get like $50k+ for it after 4 years of ownership. Will likely never sell it but it’s nice to have that peace of mind.

Reason the 4runner is built well is they are built in Japan in the same factory as it's Lexus gx460 cousin. Unlike the Tundra and Tacoma, which are built here in America. Don't get me wrong they are great too.

I just bought a 2023 4Runner TRD off-road premium. I've put a rack on it, tinted the windows, next will be the lift kit along with upgraded sway bar and end links. I live on a dirt road and when it rains, it turns into a river. I use the part-time 4x4 to get through the water and sand and what a difference it makes. The gas mileage? The slower you go, the better gas mileage you get. I can get anywhere from 13 mpg to 36 mpg. My average is 16 mpg if that says anything. It may not have the hp but it sure looks good. I love to admire it in the parking lot and in the reflection on the windows in the drive-thru. Just a note: I've heard that the 2024 version will be a hybrid. They just have to decide which hybrid to go with: Tundra or Tacoma. So, if you're planning on getting one, get it soon. I'm so glad I have the real deal.

Not to mention, at 150k, it runs the same as it did when new. They are just very well-built vehicles and difficult to beat from a value standpoint. It's a brick. Fuel efficiency is not going to be great. The resale makes the case, I love them. Great review Kevin, please keep up the objectivity. I still bought what I wanted, but your insight made me well aware of the shortcomings that I would not have been aware of as I made a decision.

I buy a vehicle for a purpose. I bought the 4Runner because it met my criteria for many purposes, and I'm not disappointed. I wish I could say I'm as impressed with the dealership. They were just all too typical with their practiced promises that you know are nothing but lies and BS. I've only ever dealt with one dealership that was honest. And, most amazing about that experience was that it was a used car dealer.

Couldn't agree more. I don't want all the problems from 8spd 10spd trans. Infotainment, etc. First Toyota we've ever owned. Always Hondas. My 2014 accord, still have, quality seems to have gone down. Still have our 07 odyssey. However, my friend still has his 99 lexus with 400k. And he really doesn't maintain it like i maintain our vehicles. So, I priced honda odyssey, pilot, etc. And we chose the 23 4runner sr5 premium 4wd. Should be bullet proof. All we need and more, simplicity is better. They say its a gas hog, but on trips I get better mileage out of it than the 07 odyssey. Can average 25 to 27. I don't do the jack rabbit starts, and keep it at 68. Anything 70 or above it sure drops mpg.

I love that this thing will go anywhere the TURD will too (Play on trd sound)... and saves several thousands over that, which I don't need. TRD are great for thost that want them for what they are DESIGNED FOR- but this will easily do what I need and MORE. I'm also 67 now and won't be driving all that much so the mpg won't hurt that bad.

I had a 1998 4Runner I believe it had the 4-cylinder and a button by the shifter for extra power and it had more than enough power, when I sold it at 180 000 Miles still running like brand-new. I'm thinking about buying this modeling before the redesign , these things are bulletproof and I'm tired of having new cars with all these weird problems.
@theAV8R

Completely ignoring true off-roading here, since 95% of 4Runners where I live are Costco wagons: 4Runners cost about 30% to 40% more to own over a ute like a CrV or a Rav4. This accounts for maintenance, odds of catastrophic failure (low for 4runner), parts cost, routine maint cost , fuel, etc. To those of us who value the extra the 4R brings, like if we live in a near the arctic or desert, it's worth the extra. However, I'm seeing folks preach resale value and reliability and completely ignoring the sticker price of these things right now. Their current prices almost completely negate the benefits, and it sucks. I personally love the 4R and am willing to pay the difference, and think anyone living remotely should as well, but for an asphalt warrior it's a truly terrible value proposition since dealers are sucking up all residual value from its reliability.

Looks are subjective but the Pilot is way more sexy and tough looking with a better body design, the engine isn’t as smooth as the Highlander and is also a tad bit louder. Ride is also smooth but a tie bit more bumpy that I noticed resulting in a better smoother and quieter drive for the Highlander. Highlander 3rd row is useless however Pilot 3rd is very useful and comfortable for me at 5’8. Here’s my opposite comments, LoL. XP Package - Not the best tire option. Wish XP package came with A/T tires with #PMSF rating. Handling - You cannot judge 4Runner that easy since different trims handle differently because SR5 vs TRD ORP with KDSS vs TRD Pro with Fox vs Limited with XREAS handle very differently. 3rd row - I think you haven’t seen the 3rd row. Open it and see. 3rd row 4runners can adjust the 2nd row to have more leg room. Resale value - I think that is true to 4WD models. I don’t think 2wd models have good resale value as 4wd models. I have no clue why 2wd models exist as you can buy 4WD model and run 2wd for on road use and have 4WD when you hit off pavement. 2wd have less ground clearance than 4wd models. 🍻

Slow down there partner lol. It doesn’t compare to a GT3? More like an old Versa with 15” under-inflated 185’s lol. I almost flipped one going the speed limit on an off-ramp! It totally freaked me out, I wasn’t expecting such poor handling tbh. Longtime subscriber here, but this is a purpose-built tank primarily for off-road that can relatively manage day-to-day non-evasive highway maneuvers. Liked, subscribed and shared :)

I drive 85 and im not allergic to speed. Had my fair share of sports cars too but an aftermarket throttle kit fixes my sluggish issue. Its not really that bad anymore and also forget to mention the Smode on the runner is benificial. You literally can shift yourself up and revving up the first few gears up to speed. An automatic i can shift myself up to speed is pretty quick for its weight. Although a v8 would’ve been nice but I settled for the v6 and i shift myself up to speed and down where its pretty fun without a clutch.

That rectangular spot does hold an iPhone 14 and why did you get a two wheel drive to look at. No offense of anything but that’s not the one. There is no difference in towing or gas to step up to 4x4 and the resale is way higher. Also 5000 lb towing is pretty comparable to most mid size SUV’s now days. I own a 22 sr5 premium 4x4. It’s awesome. I’ll never get rid of it. My wife has a car for better gas mileage and it’s easier to drive in smaller downtown areas. We might trade that one out a bit, but never the runner. That will always be here for the old reliability and rugged durability

Would have to take the LexusGx460 over this. 4Runner is great but my goodness Toyota doesn't invest in NVH material and the GX is way quieter than the 4Runner. Also the V8 in the GX is better than the V6 in the forerunner.

@@MeynMotorGroup I don't know what models your looking at. A GX 460 with premium package is around 61-63K. A 4 Runner TRD OR with premium is 46k.If you go to the top of 4Runner with the TRD PRO at 56k and the bottom of the GX at 59K; I suppose its close, but generally speaking there is a 17k to 20k difference in cost when looking at equal levels of the two trucks.

Almost bought a 2022 4Runner last year. Just couldn’t get around the outdated transmission, terrible gas mileage and weak HP. Went with the 22 Jeep Grand Cherokee WK instead. Looking forward to what Toyota does with the next Gen 4Runner. Hopefully they offer it with a better powered V6 with more HP and better gas mileage to compete with the Ford Bronco, which is kicking the 4Runner’s ass in terms of modernization and features.

@@Anomize23😂 Knight in shining armor to the defense! Other reviews call the inside dated too. I didn't say that it wasn't functional and it clearly doesn't have trouble selling. More specifically, comparing the current 2024 4Runner TRD Pro to the Tacoma, Tundra or Sequoia TRD Pro, the 4Runner interior lacks the "Racing" or sports appeal sitting in the cockpit. And I'd bet money that nobody buys a 4Runner TRD Pro because the interior wow'd them. Just my $0.001 (not a typo).
