Prospecting for gold using MAGNETS.....!?

Gold panning or prospecting for gold using magnets? Does it make sense? Is gold magnetic? How can you use magnets to find gold. Well.... No, gold is not magnetic. No, gold is not attracted to magnets. However you can still use magnets to find gold, or to recover gold, by using them to attract the black sands that always deposit with the gold. In this video I use a magnetic separator to refine my gold concentrates making it MUCH easier to get the gold.

Several years ago a professor told me if I took the hematite portions and heated them to a certain temperature, then quickly removed them and dumped them in ice water, they would mostly become magnetic. Nor sure if that would be economic, but does anyone know approximately what that heated temperature should be? If the heating could be done by a large magnifier under the sun, it might be worth trying. Also, once the gold has been mostly removed, what is still in the remaining black sands? There may still be some PGM's or even rare earth metals that may be economic to one day remove, so I would tend to save everything in a separate marked container, even after the gold were removed.

Would like to have seen how much of the gold caught up in the magnet and "dry"iron mix would have fallen out if gravity was allowed to do what it does best if turned upside down , but in a wet mix "most" gold would be trapped to truly prove the point .

When I got my first pan, the first thing I did was add two small powerful magnets to the inside and out of the bottom of my pan. I would pan both the ferrous and non ferrous. Worked like a charm using some of Dan Hurd's cool panning techniques. Not with the ease of this new separator though. cool!!

I'm sure that greater minds have considered something along this line and dismissed it as insufficient, but it still makes me wonder what an actual prospector would concoct to address their own challenges. @@Scott93312 In Australia they use detectors that find gold. Their picks axes have strong magnets on the tips that will pull up any rubbish and sometimes if your in Wester Australia ( Around Kargoolie ) it picks up " hot rocks " magnetic iron rock, sometimes they may contain aluvial gold veins that you can crush to separate the gold from the rocks. I have never heard of people " detecting for gold " in the US. Why? Other magnetic minerals that can be found with a magnet can also be " species " pronounced spe- she- s. They are highly valuable and sought after! They are usually easy to find with not just a detector but also a magnet. I have actually seen a 78 oz and a 42 oz nugget found 10 meters apart and both found in a 75 min period. Is this not used in the US? I have also seen several hot rocks that were cut in half and found to have pure gold inside! Now prospectors are not so quick to discard them. If they find these hot rocks are quite dense or very heavy, they keep them to cut open.

Probably the best separator I have seen yet uses a tank of water and a fairly weak magnet to separate the magnetics. By pouring in the cons at a specific point it pulls the magnetics without actually clumping them up. This allows the non-magnetic material to fall into one bin, and the magnetics to fall into another. It was extremely effective and could be used at an industrial scale. Also, and I know Dan has a very limited time to talk about this type of stuff, but remember that no all gold is completely iron free, and some can still be caught by a magnet.

They do have larger versions but they are really large (like washing machine large) and are normally using water to separate. It does go pretty quick but they are big and expensive and need a large amount of water.

A lot of people think that magnets attract gold, but they don't, they only work on ferrous metals, ie iron based. But it is helpful to g separate the black iron sands from the gold. These black sands are also fairly heavy and where they accumulate, so does the gold. Nice video, though.

Klesh has a video using a magnet to pull black sands out of the stream using that tendency of gold to get caught up in it. He then goes through the magnetics to find the gold. Interesting way of mining.

Just a thought, ANY metal including gold can be picked up by an electromagnet that alternates it's polarity rapidly. This induces eddy currents and makes the metal stick to the electromagnet despite the metal not normally being attracted to magnets.

Not really. While you can induce a current, it doesn’t make most non-magnetic metals magnetic themselves. There is a definite difference .

Magnets and their resulting eddy currents do interact with nonferrous metals, but it won't make them temporarily magnetic...they just have more drag when they go through a field. It's possible that with enough eddy current generation in the right manner, you could use that drag to throw some of that gold over the hump, but the field is rather small and switching polarity fast enough that it wouldn't happen in this case. Older tachometers and speedometers used eddy currents to move a needle by using the drive cable to rotate a permanent magnet around an aluminum cup, and the resulting eddy current was enough to overcome a very weak calibrated spring tension...so the force is definitely there to pick up gold and move it, but at the same time, the eddy current produced is a constant force and polarity...not alternating at a high frequency as this device does.

Have you ever heard of a Franz Magnetic Separator before? This little separator is a very crude small example of a Franz. However, the Franz separates most all minerals, including gold and other economical minerals. I used one when I worked for the US Geological Survey as a lab technician.

Got me to thinking if there was a way to separate gold and other non ferrous metals from concentrates using an eddy current and perhaps some sort of drop tube or something once the magnetic portion is removed. The theory being the gold would be slowed down going through the eddy current while the non-metallics would fall unimpeded. Or on a vibratory plate, where the non-metallics would bounce around more energetically and bounce off the plate while the metallics would be dampened by the resistance from the eddy current and stay on the plate. That separation, if capitalized on, could potentially classify gold out of concentrates entirely.

That's a smart idea and I've considered similar procedures myself. I experimented using copper filings. What I found was while copper is strongly inductive (as is gold), the ability to induce force using a magnetic field is not apparent in fine particles. Even pouring the filings directly over the magnet produced no noticeable change in velocity (I used large N52 grade magnet). I'm not sure what size piece starts to become resistant to movement in a magnetic field but I expect it is far larger than you would need a machine to separate.

@@nathanegbert977 Well, theoretically speaking, the size of the object is irrelevant in regard to how much drag it sees from an eddy current, sort of like how the same countering forces between inertia and gravity balance themselves out regardless of mass. Maybe it has more to do with how saturated the flux lines that the conductive particles are flowing through, or perhaps the nonconductive particles are just overwhelming the drag effect when colliding into the conductive particles, or a combination of both. It could be that in order to get any meaningful separation, an extremely dense electromagnetic field would be required...which may rule out the idea for a hobby prospector.

@@Skinflaps_Meatslapper I don't know much about theory but concentrating the field seems worth looking into. There's ways to do that using magnet arrays or ferrous shielding. I can make an iron clamshell but I'm certainly not going to attempt an array. The magnets I have were built for a wind turbine and thus have deep field which is not ideal for this experiment. 10 cubic inch N52 is a scary thing to play with. It's good practice to not even have two of them in the same room. Trying to get four of them into an array? Yeah, not me. If I was pursuing this further, I'd get four 1/2" x 1/2" x 1" and force them into an array. Then drop a stream of filings through the concentrated field and look for drag. If it works, it should be obvious and you can scale up from there. But the short of it is, I don't live near gold. I pan a bit while rafting rivers. So good luck and maybe you discover the next gen separator.

Yes, very good deduction man. However, consider that the concentration at hand is classified by gravity/weight therefore the magnetite is much larger than the micron gold. The heavy gold will settle by gravity throughout the entire matrix of the larger magnetite. Statistically the more prevalent but smaller micron gold will tend to stay with the magnetic material. Interestingly, is that applying your concept to a wetted matrix would likely have a greater result than with the dry concentrates. The question I have at this point of classification, whether wet or dry is: What is the composition of the magnetite? Which metals or elements are contrained in the magnetics. If the zinc content is low and the iron content is high: Why not dissolve the magnetite in Hydrochloric acid? Do a few muriatic acid hot soaks and pour through a coffee filter. Why not take the solids from the filter and dissolve them in aqua reg? Maybe? 5 parts muriatic to 1 part nitric on a hot plate should put the gold in suspension, the liquid state. When the solids are gone and the suspension is orange yellow translucent the gold can be precipitated out of suspension using sodium metabisulfate. I suspect that most magnetites are difficult to dissolve but crushing them should solve that problem. Cheers

I had been thinking about a process that's almost Identical, instead of a rotating magnet, use an electromagnet. Gold would be classified to the same property as copper , and aluminum. It's called Diamagnetic. Theres a fun experiment using a small copper tube and a magnet (those super magnets even work better) that just fits inside of the tube. You drop the magnet inside the tube and you will notice a difference between just dropping a magnet and dropping a magnet inside the copper tube. Its a difference in speed. A magnet has a magnetic field and when it moves when in a tube, the copper increases a counter magnetic Field apposing the magnets motion. In the same way an electrical motor works. The A.C. electromagnet doesn't need to move as a moving magnet would. So less wear and tear. Dan it's a very good demonstration you show, Thank you..

All you need now are some Allan Robertson silicone sluice mats to match, he is one of the innovators of this device and he is years ahead of the rest. He has a drinks holder on his sluice box.... 👍👍👍👍👍

I think the size of the machine is made for doing what you said not to do. You run the magnet through your bucket and then empty the magnet into that machine. The machine will let loosen the stuff that got caught up in your quick magnet work.

I have seen this technique. It works well. Basically pre-concentrate your iron and do a reverse sort.

Dan you must see the blue table chris from vo gus uses for black sands, his black sands are non magnetic and he has this table that is amazing at removing them from gold. Much faster than what you just went through.

If the speed controller is set to high or fast, it will miss some magnetics. I start and test my first run around 12vlt

You can separate individual gold atoms, from other material, by using a mass spectrometer. Unfortunately, mass spectrometry isn't used on an industrial scale to sort significant (economic) numbers of atoms yet.

Just an idea: Pan out some pay dirt, weigh the gold, put the weight of the gold on the bag, put he gold and dirt back in the bag. You'd need to get a lot more money for it to reflect the extra work but you could sell them as practice bags for people learning to pan. They could use them over and over to perfect their technique.

Since Klesh taught me through his YTchannel to use jet dry, it has been much more easier to pan for gold… no more floating gold dust or gold flour. Use 1 liter bottle of jet dry inside a container of 60 gallon plastic bin, no need to clean the water when it looks muddy; wait for a day or two and the water becomes clean enough to reuse while all else settles to the bottom of the bin. I’ve been using the same water for the past 2 years, once in a while I do add more water and 1/2 a cup of jet dry when it needs more water.

You should do another video on some dallasite being cut or something. A little variety on some rocks like agates in there too. Those red skins are pretty when cut.. anyways always love seeing the gold tho and that picture stone..
