Patients on active surveillance often have to undergo multiple biopsies during their journey with prostate cancer.

Adam Kinnaird is a Surgeon Scientist and the Frank and Carla Sojonky Chair in Prostate Cancer Research in the Division of Urology, Department of Surgery at the University of Alberta. He completed a fellowship in Imaging, Targeted Biopsy and Focal Therapy for Prostate Cancer at UCLA. He completed his MD and Urology residency at the U of A, during which he was enrolled in the Clinician Investigator Program. He completed his PhD as a Vanier Scholar and was awarded the Governor General’s Gold Medal in research. He has published in high-impact journals such as Nature Reviews Cancer, Cell, and European Urology and has been awarded funding from local, regional, and national grant competitions since starting as an Assistant Professor in November 2020.
His lab studies translational prostate cancer research with a focus on new drugs, technologies, and devices. He is the principal investigator on multiple investigator-initiated trials prostate cancer trials and participates in industry-sponsored trials examining the use of state-of-the-art imaging techniques for prostate cancer diagnostics including PSMA PET, multiparametric MRI, and high-resolution micro-ultrasound.

Hi Dr I'm from Durban south Africa I had 10 out of 14 cores test positive for Gleason 6 on biopsy - my psa has been ranging from 4.7 to 6.7 in the last three years also coming down at times - is there any hope for active surveillance or not

Why can't we use PSMA PET scans before biopsies? If nothing shows, no need for invasive biopsy

Hi @bjhelder, this is a great question. Unfortunately, while most prostate cancers are made up of cells that express the PSMA molecule (making it an ideal target for imaging most prostate cancers), it is expressed in much lower levels in others (for which the scan wouldn't work as well).
