Find Your BitLocker Recovery Key

If your computer asks for your BitLocker recovery key, this video will help you find it. BitLocker encrypts your hard drive to protect your data, but sometimes it gets a little unhappy and needs a recovery key to decrypt the drive. Fortunately there are a number of places you might be able to find this key if you haven't got it to hand.

The manage-bde command is a preventative measure to make sure you have a copy of your key *before* you get locked out. If you're already locked out of your drive it won't work and you will need to use one of the other methods in the video to find your key.

@@flixhyper1491 if your drive is unlocked and you still don't see a password then it's possible your drive was encrypted without creating a recovery key. You ought to be able to create one of your own with "manage-bde -protectors -add C: -rp", replacing C with the appropriate drive letter.

@@ProTechShow i have the recovery key and it gets me past the Bitlocker Blue screen and I continue it unlocks then says Automatic Repair and I can shut down or advance options if I shut down when I turn back on it says preparing automatic repair and brings me right back to bitlocker recovery key screen again. There is nothing else attached to this surface pro except USB mouse- suggestions?

Just wanted to support the pro tech show because nothing else worked for me and this man explained things beautifully! Very useful! Some time ago I was helping my dad recover from the same issue - and luckily I had printed the recovery key when I first set up the device for him. But while troubleshooting I first learned about Microsoft backing up the key to the cloud. And I was speechless, it was kind of a surprise to learn that the key to your precious and private data is stored at some big tech datacenter automatically. But seeing how BitLocker is used in the coorporate setting, then it actually makes sense. Great video as always! Keep it up :)

My initial reaction was similar - how dare they assume I want them to take a copy of the key to my data and store it in a MS account! Then I realised that by default on a home PC anyone with access to the MS account could just log into the computer anyway so it's kind of moot. Still feels like they ought to ask... or at least tell you upfront.

For Azure, if you lose the key and it was not backed up, the microsoft link won't work. The only other thing you can do is try to use the recovery key ID to find the key itself in Azure under a different serial number. This is not well understood by Azure support and requires multiple levels of support if it is indeed possible. The lesson learned here is that encryption is a double edged sword. If you don't back up the key and you get this screen, you may as well throw the machine in the river, you aren't getting in.

Not so fast. There is software that can retrieve the recovery key, not always, but often. Several forensic software. And there is PC-3000 Data Extractor device that can discover it. Finally, you can crack the Bitlocker password, but not the key.

I have watched so many videos today in an attempt to get into my computer without my BitLocker key (that I didn't know I had) but your's was the first to suggest going into a SCHOOL account to check for a key. I had no BitLocker enabled before. This happened after I connected my old laptop SSD to a new Laptop with TPM2.0. I could login two times without blue screen. I noticed BitLocker icon on my drive but didn’t care much as the padlock was open. In the third time it gave this blue screen. Nothing worked, no key was in the Microsoft account as well. When restoring hardware configuration (Disk Drives) I tried removing the laptop battery and tried putting back the HDDs and it did work!! I could login without entering any key

Fantastic help. Having found that the key for my laptop was not stored on my microsoft account and being close to wiping all my data i found this clip and after one last restart the Bitlocker screen magically disappeared and I was able to locate the key and make a note of it for future reference. Excellent explanation, well done. Quick comment - Windows 10/11 only automatically turns on BitLocker if you sign in with your work or school, or personal Microsoft account. So, if the customer signs in with a local account it won't automatically activate BitLocker. The customer can manually turn it on, of course, in the Manage BitLocker tool. I happen to think BitLocker is a good thing, of course, for the reasons you clearly laid out at the beginning of your video. :-)

Thanks. There seem to be other scenarios where it gets enabled as well. Although they say it doesn't get enabled automatically for local accounts, I have observed it getting enabled automatically when using local accounts where a Microsoft account was subsequently added within the Windows user profile (i.e. saved in the settings app for logging in to applications, but not used to log in to Windows itself). I haven't tested it, but I assume the addition of the Microsoft account within the local user profile was the trigger in that case. Given how difficult they're making it to sign in to Home edition devices running 11 without a Microsoft account I think it's going to become difficult to avoid! Personally, I always ensure BitLocker enabled; but most people don't know it even exists and MS could do a much better job of warning them. There have been quite a few people who have messaged me about second-hand devices where they have no idea whose account the key was stored in. A popup any time a new user signs in to explain that the drive is unencrypted and they need to keep a copy of the key somewhere would avoid a lot of problems.

I've tried all of the options you've suggested but when I look at all of my devices on my account only one doesn't have any bitlocker recovery key. I do have the recovery id. But for some reason I can't find the recovery key for my Surface pro 4. I've made a media disk and a surface firmware disk drive. I even have two recovery disks and it still brings me to either pushing the windows key UEFI or the Bitlocker recovery key screen. And it won't go past those screens. I've tried to do it from my desktop and other laptop. And I still can't find it under the command prompt. I have ordered a new Windows 10 pro OEM operating software disk to see if it will wipe out the issues.

Hello, great information! I have a more specific question, after I called the cmd prompt to Acitvate the Administrators in the local group saying Yes ! Then this Bitlocker message came asking for the key and when I tried to type it in the keyboard?, it does not type letters , it only accepts numbers... what's going on? Thanks for your time

The BitLocker recovery key is a long string of numbers. There are no letters in it. Perhaps you were typing the key ID instead of the key itself? The ID contains letters, but the key doesn't.

Those are all of the automatic ones. If none of these work then unless you have made a note of it somewhere I'm afraid you're probably out of luck.

What to do if yours computer doesn't log in because it says that they may be a missing file or contains error? edit: NVM I found out that somehow my laptop didn't generate a password when I used the CMD like in minute 7:52 just only the numerical password and mine from the Microsoft when I did go to there even that password/code didn't work either and this is the only laptop that I have bought no computer.

It seems Microsoft pushed out an update that has triggered BitLocker on a lot of devices. Presumably they made a change that affected the boot measurements and the TPM doesn't trust it.

My issue still persists. I was signed in with a local account and saved the recovery key as a pdf file but after updating the bios, the bitlocker screen came up and I didn't have the key saved anywhere else

I got this screen a couple of weeks ago, which was just a week after I purchased my desktop for my business. I managed to follow the instructions on the screen to find my key and had no issues getting back in. Now today I have this same screen and repeated the steps to get my key but my microsoft account is saying I don't have a key. Now I don't know what to do. Any suggestions?

I have just PowerShell to disable the encryption, however the keyprotector is still on. When I did the next step suggested by the youtube video, it stated that I couldn't disable bitlocker becaused the drive was locked. I have no idea what to do next, and I'm not sure what to google

You can't disable BitLocker or back up your key without unlocking the drive first. The encryption would be pointless if anyone could just turn it off. Try the methods shown in the video to see if you can find the key, then you will be able to do what you want with it.

Useful infor but didnt work. Command prompt doesnt give me the passcode just the ID. Microsoft keeps sending me to a wrong url when trying to get from site and I cant use Azure because its a personal account. This happened after it upgraded to windows 11 on its own.....how I despise windows 11. Makes windows vista seem like the brst OR

I was just in an extreme situation where I had my recovery key but it wasn't working when I put it in. I was eventually able to restore my computer back to a previous setting to get back in. What would make the recovery key not work?

The key will work as long as it is the correct key. Did the IDs match exactly? If not, you could be using an old key from another drive or device, or a prior encryption.
