In Canada, it is the same - you can't buy OTC antibiotics for animals since 2018. The reasons are the huge increase in MRSA and other antibiotic-resistant infections. Many smaller-scale farmers are learning the old ways of treating cuts, infections, and diseases in their animals. A very good friend of mine almost died from such an MRSA infection, and she carries gruesome scars as a reminder of her scare.

A benefit to having land is that you can forage and grow medicinal plants to treat your animals. I’m learning about this for our goats right now. We have Dakota Mock Vervain on our property that can treat goat mastitis. Wild dewberry leaves work like red raspberry leaves in assisting births. A pinch of rosemary leaves in their daily feed helps keep worm loads down. There is safer and free medicine all around us, if we know where to look and how to use it. Maybe this can make us less dependent on vets and big pharma, instead of more.

Then - it looks like we are just getting in step with other countries regarding OTC antibiotics for animals. What is odd about the US laws is many Rx for human use is OTC in other countries, much stricter here. We also haven't given approval for many life saving drugs that have been used for years overseas ( & safely) Many patients seek medical care in Germany & other countries that provide such tx not available here. The pharmaceutical industry is very powerful here and perhaps that's what is driving this change in the law? They make more money taking away the option from animal owners. Every farmer I know has had to use his experience in caring for his animals. (dx illnesses & knowing the best tx)

A new service some vets are using is an online pharmacy through them. My vet had his own online pharmacy for a while, but switched over to subscribing to a service which keeps a better variety of meds, and therefore, better rotation in stock (for exp dates). They ship direct. Some vets don't trust online vet suppliers, like Valley Vet, to have properly stored meds, and the vet is ultimately responsible for the quality of the med and teh health of your animal. This subscription service solves that issue for them. Plus, the service links to them for approvals. Go online, request a new bottle of Thiamine (still can't figure out why that is restricted), it notifies him, he approves, and it is sent out direct to me.

In England, we have never been able to buy antibiotics from the store. Most medication has to be purchased from a vet. Even flea treatments. There are some none medicated flea treatments from pet stores. But they’re not very affective. I think it’s a good thing. Because antibiotics are really bad if used wrong. If the course isn’t done properly it courses super bugs and the bacteria mutates, causing antibiotic resistant germs. I’m really suppressed you could buy your own antibiotics before now.

Try to think about it from another perspective. In a lot of countries farmers treat all their animals if one get sick and need antibiotics. A healthy animal doesn't need antibiotics. This, with the growing antibiotics resistance in the world needs to be addressed. I'm sorry but it's almost always responsible farmers that feels they got run over because of those whose not responsible. I don't think the law is there to create problems for farmers. The reason probably is the resistance of antibiotics which is a serious matter. Most laws are good laws but we feel controlled by them.
