Like many parts of southern Africa, our reserve is facing severe water shortages caused by reduced rainfall and high temperatures.
With our water sources drying up and vegetation sparse, animals are struggling to find adequate food and hydration.
Habitat plays a vital role in the survival of all wildlife. For World Habitat Day on 7 October, we are highlighting this and our work to support and sustain our wilderness.
You can help by supporting our land restoration project - www.globalgivi...
This year, the El Niño has had devastating effects in southern Africa, causing a severe drought and impacting wildlife in the region. El Niño is a climate pattern marked by warmer-than-normal sea surface temperatures in the Pacific Ocean, disrupting global weather systems.
We have seen the effects of this drought firsthand, with our waterholes almost all dry. Our herd can only drink and swim in waterholes that we are filling with water using pumps. We are taking the opportunity to make the current dried-up dams deeper and to create solar-powered borehole water supplies.
Herbivores like elephants, antelope and zebras face the threat of malnutrition as their food sources become scarce, leading to higher mortality rates. Predators are also affected as prey becomes more limited. The drought forces wildlife to travel greater distances in search of water, often leading to overcrowding at remaining waterholes, which can result in competition and conflict between species.
The after-effects of this El Niño could lead to long-term damage to ecosystems as plants and animals struggle to recover from the drought. Waterholes and rivers, critical for supporting wildlife and surrounding communities, may take months or years to replenish.
We will do everything we can to ensure the well-being of our elephants and surrounding wildlife as we await the much-needed rain.
Thank you for your continued compassion and support 🐘💛

The ironies in the situation between South Africa and Thailand are truly heartbreaking. South Africa is experiencing severe drought causing very limited water source for our beloved elephants and other wildlife, while in Thailand, there was severe flooding, which caused the painful passing of 2 beautiful ellies at ENP. Mother Nature is a very good provider, but oftentimes, people abuse Her blessings causing climate change and the innocent ones to suffer Her wrath. Elephants do not only have huge bodies, but they also have huge needs. We are very thankful for Adine and HERD for doing so much so our Jabulani ellies and their neighbors can survive the drought until the next rainy season. I am so sad for those wild herds and other animals who would need to travel so far to quench their thirst and satisfy their hunger. God Bless All Beautiful Creatures And May Rain And God's Blessings Will Pour On You Very Soon.🙏🐘❤

Yes and then the famine in two other African countries caused the culling of 200 (?) elephants each. The governments said that the animals will pass anyway due to lack of food/water and there was a chance that the meat could help humans that are going hungry. Heartbreaking all around.

Oh my Lord, in Africa the Jabulani Herd and the large wild herd are struggling with the effects of the drought and in Thailand at the Elephant Nature Park they were forced to work as hard as they could to relocate nearly 5,000 animals to higher grounds that they rescued over the years when the rain caused the river to overflow to such an extent that the entire park is now under like 5 feet of water. I still cry thinking about how hard Mother Lek cried and continues to weep over the loss of two elephants who drowned, one blind and the other with severe injuries that made it difficult for both of them to fight the raging flood waters. If only Africa could have gotten some of that rain, both areas of land would be doing considerably better than they are now.

I was devastated to learn that two Elephants drowned having been swept away by the torrent of water at ENP Thailand. They are a wonderful Sanctuary. Lek is naturally inconsolable. And yes Africa is experiencing this drought. Mother Nature is very kind but also ruthlessly cruel. May the flooding stop in Thailand the the rains fall where it is desperately needed.

The sight of the arid landscape and your descriptions of the effects of drought are truly alarming. I am grateful for all your efforts on behalf of the animals but also recognize that climate change will persist and will likely worsen because of the damage humans have already done. Pumping water from deeper sources is a stopgap measure until those resources also run dry. Some places are dying of drought - others from floods. I am fearful about the long-term implications not only for your herd but for the entirety of Africa and the world. I hope rain arrives soon and will do what I can to support your work.

I live in the eastern part of the US and we didn't get much rain either during our past summer. However, the Southeast part of the US is being pummeled by rain from hurricanes and flooding. I think Mother Nature is angry at us for abusing the resources she provides. This is a devastating time, so sad to see how hard it is getting for them all. I hope the measures you are implementing now, will pay dividends next year... I can see how dry & wrinkly some become now 😰😰😰 On a separate note, to those hit by Hurricane Helene, praying for you & Miltin it seems will completely finish what is left by the first hit. Please leave the area, tomorrow apparently is going to be very dangerous, also fires caused by cables... I hope more lives can be saved, it may seem that Milton is not so strong, but it will demolish any remaining structures 😢 Praying for all those, including Wildlife whobate suffering from Environmental events at thos time. Love & light to all 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🫶🐘🐆🦁🐃🦓🦒🦏

Yes, we are all definitely living in very trying times. As the Earth’s climate changes, it is impacting extreme weather across the planet. Record-breaking heat waves on land and in the ocean, drenching rains, severe floods, years-long droughts, extreme wildfires, and widespread flooding during hurricanes are all becoming more frequent and more intense.

What extreme weather conditions are there in the world!😲 There is a severe drought in southern Africa while massive floods are ravaging Southeast Asia. In Thailand, for example, Elephant Nature Park has been completely flooded, the animals had to be evacuated with hard work but the current swept some of them away, including elephants.🐘🐃🐄 Unfortunately, there are also fatalities.😭 I wish Asia could send some of its rains to Africa, and Africa could send some of its drought to Asia.

Please pray for the elephants in Thailand! The Elephant Nature Park is under water! 2 Elephants have already died. Faa Sai and Ploy Thong! They will sadly be missed. Send your elephant prayers to Elephant Nature Park. They have over 100 elephants to move. And hundreds of other animals.! PRAY PLEASE!

@Patti-d2v I am - like many others - so saddened at the loss of Beloved Faa Sai and Ploy Thong. Lek, her husband Darrick and the Caregivers will be dreadfully distressed at the loss of these treasured Elephants. I hope the remaining Elephants - and all the different animals at ENP and all flooded areas - will be saved. And Africa is desperate for rain. Someone remarked that "God is angry with the world" Perhaps so but it is the innocent who bear the brunt of the devastation. May the land everywhere return to "normal". Thank you to the many volunteers throughout the world who are working so hard to help those in desperate need of help. 🙏

@@janparish7895 Have you gotten any news yet? I read that the waters are now receding. And a news report came out saying that ENP is to blame for the deaths because they didn't evacuate in time. And that they ignored the evacuation orders because they were still having tourists at the time. Something about that article isn't right! Lek would NEVER put any animal there in danger for tourism! Yes, maybe Lek should have evacuated sooner but, we don't know the real story!

@Patti-d2v Hi Patti. Sorry for the delay in getting back to you. No I haven't heard any further news but I hope you're right about the waters receding. Please God. No way would Lek put those Elephants at risk!! I don't know how fast it all happened but it's impossible to move such large animals quickly. People are quick to point the finger sadly. I'm sure Lek, Darrick and the staff are devastated. I can't get it out of my head. If I get any news I will let you know - please let me know if you hear more? I'm in UK - where are you? Take care 🙏

What sure was a large herd of wild elephants, a tiny baby 😍 then a few a bit older. Was there a pregnant ellie too? Far right side of the rest. My goodness you are sure having issues re lack of rain and feed just not there. I don’t recall in the quite few yrs watching have you had such devastating drought re dams. Actually I was just thinking I wonder if you drill bores, then you mentioned it! 🙏🙏s that you and the rest of Sth Africa gets the much needed rain. That is a shock to see that dam with no water in it.

Semi circular bunds or basins are working wonders in many desert areas in parts of Africa like Niger, Tanzania, and also in some places in U.S. deserts. These are not massive holes but are built on slopes with a gradient of less than 2%. They are usually around 2.5 meters long and 5 meters wide. They store water, capture any water running down hills and also acts like a subsurface irrigation. They are easily built and maintained. They won't provide huge swimming holes but they will keep the vegetation around them green and growing. These could prove very effective for HERD.

I really like it when you identify and name which elephants are shown in the video. I’m slowly learning how to identify the elephants in this herd, but it’s taking awhile. It’s striking to see the difference between what the African elephants are experiencing compared to the elephants at the Elephant Nature Park in Thailand that are dealing with flooding situations.

Jeepers, that's dry 🫣. At least all the elephants at HERD are okay but I feel for all the wild elephants and other wildlife. Strangely enough it looks like the eastern seaboard of Australia is in La Nina so we've been having record rainfall for this time of year. In Tasmania we've had very below average winter rain for the past 3 yrs but this is the first time in many years that the grass is lush and long. This is evident from the low numbers of roadkill. You should be getting Spring rain now ..... 😢.
