I have a 10 kg Maine Coon and I called a groomer because he had some mats behind the front legs that I struggle to brush, we couldnt manage even with two persons, even with some relaxing meds, he was so strong and hated it he bit her even through the protective gloves lmao. What a lil' bastard. So we had to bring him to the vet and she put him to sleep to shave these parts. I have two maine coons but this one, I can brush him everyday but he has soooo muccchhh undercoat that is crazy so there are always little mats at some places.

To me it rather looks like he does definitly not like it ... but overall knows that its a good thing. And what I experienced: Sometimes cutting out the mates is way more easy and less stressful for the kitty, that beeing said for a 4 year old very fluffy cat :)

"Poor Ninja. Hated every minute of it, but I bet he feels so much better after." Only if it helped him get rid of some irritations. Cats appreciate when you help them, not when you do lots of things to them that have no benefit to them. Cats operate by smells and if you wash them and get rid of a lot of the smells they are in serious trouble with other cats in their neighbourhood until their own smell grows back.

I am a first time cat owner. I wasn't intending to have one but we found one and couldn't find an owner. Due to an... incident in the carry carrier in the car we had to bath her. She handled it OK, but we have decided to bath her once or twice a year, just to make sure it is something that doesn't freak her out too much. Sometimes you have to get animals used to things. Minor distress in the present can prevent major distress in the future.

And one day, a couple years ago now, it kinda gave us signs that it was over, and one night he just passed quietly. truely the greatest cat I've ever seen.

I remember being about 3 or 4 years old, and combing out some knots in our cat's belly fur. I was told that he was sad so he wasn't caring for himself. I used a regular hair comb for it. Kitty just let me push him over when he was loafing around, and start working the knots out. Didn't get scratched or growled at, not entirely sure how. Kitty did start taking care of himself afterwards though 😊

So my groomer explained to me that mats pull on the skin and essentially your cat is slowly being "scalped". Because they love being clean and your kitty was depressed and not grooming. The feeling of being scratched and having all that painful matting brushed out probably felt better than having it pulling at his skin. So afterwards he was so comfortable and felt motivated to clean himself again.

When I was little, Dad was in the Royal Canadian Air Force (as it was known back then). I had a black tomcat named - yeah, so original - Tommy. We lived on a very small base in Northern Ontario and the base commander would call the house quite often for Dad to come pick us up. I would dress Tommy in doll clothes, give him my baby brothers bottle with milk in it, put him in my dolly's carriage and go to find Dad if he was late - in my little 3 yr old time-telling abilities. Back in the 60s, it wasn't unusual to see all the little ones outside with nobody worrying if we hadn't been seen because we were all off playing together. Mom even has pictures of Tommy and I outside, him allowing me to torment him instead of my dolly 😊

The single best comb I've found for cats who do not like brushing is the Japanese-created Philocomb. I saw someone who used it on feral cats at shelters and got it for my brush-resistant cat early on and now she demands brushing multiple times a day. The curved teeth are made of resin and apparently just feel fantastic to cats. Not a de-matting comb, but after a cat is de-matted, it is great at maintaining their coat.

So grumpy but also has to feel a million times better! Cats crack me up! They have such attitudes! We have a apx 4 year old that used to be a stray/ part of a feral colony, that now is mostly an indoor cat. I managed to cut his nails yesterday, he acted like he was going to kill me the whole time. But I just did it as fast as possible, tried to stay as calm as possible, and surprise - he was all talk too.

my cats responded really well to baths just starting with lukewarm water about an inch deep, and a cup.. just put them in up to their toes and then slowly pour the water higher and higher up their body. it did not take them long to get used to that and they would tolerate shampoo and getting rinsed and everything after awhile, one cat actually like it and got excited about getting towel dried like a dog would. it was so simple to do it that way but it really helped.

I have to give Ninja a lot of credit for being a great kitty 🐈‍⬛ while being groomed. He had a bunch of knots that I know hurt badly as they were being pulled out and he did not scratch or bite. It hurt my heart to hear him in pain but I could see he understood his groomer was helping him. I give props to the groomer for your patience and care while grooming Ninja. You did a great job. Plus you did your best to make sure he was comfortable as possible and gave him breaks where needed. Yes, I agree cats take longer to care for, but they are so worth it in the end. Ninja looked relieved when it was over 😂and he looked happier than he did from the beginning of the video. This is my first time seeing this channel. I look forward to seeing more videos from here.

Vanessa is 100% correct about everything she has said regarding cats. Bathing them young is absolutely essential. When they get elderly and can't groom themselves, they absolutely need human help. exactly. and i think some people assume the stress of a bath is worse for a cat than having unclean fur and skin, but honestly its really not in most cases. the oil and dirt that cakes up and causes matting is sooo much more stressful and painful to live with all the time, than to get an occasional bath.

Pretty much. Then again a lot of people have pets and aren't educated enough to make these calls. We really need to get rid of "never bathe cats" stigma. Desensitization is probably the BEST method for cats and dogs when it comes to these situations. Start them early even if they don't really need it, that way when it becomes necessary, they're not likely to worry as much. As the owner it's your job to think ahead.

@@nirablackfire2792I fully agree. Idk how many cat extremist I've seen say "my cat is 10 years old and has NEVER been bathe or had its nails clipped and is doing just fine" like that doesn't mean every cat will be the same. I've seen kitties with coats just like ninja that were in rough shape since the owner never bathe them and when they needed it, it was an extremely stressful situation. Also seen cats nails grow into their paws from not being trimmed. If you're not finding ways to help your kitty groom, it's up to us as owners to help them

I'm not sure if its available in Canada, but in the US a new product recently came out called Solensia, its a once monthly injection for feline arthritis and its worked wonders for my 14y Olive. She cleans herself more now and is jumping back up on tables and windowsills as she always loved to do before her arthritis started. She acts like a kitten again! She's been on it for a bit over a year I believe.

My 17 year old Mr. Midnight started solensia this year and it's been wonderful for him. He had completely stopped grooming himself, and was laying on the floor more often. After starting it, he's back to jumping up on things and acting like a young kitten again. It is kind of pricey where I am, but it's so worth it to see him feeling better.

Solensia has been a miracle for my 8 yr old Maine Coon Poppy. She's had arthritis since she was 3 and it's been a challenge keeping her comfortable. I give her Adequan shots every ten days and she gets a shot of Solensia monthly. The difference in her since starting Solensia is remarkable. I've groomed both my MCs weekly since they were 12 weeks old but now I'm wishing I'd started bathing them too. Thankfully they both can still groom themselves.

Solensia was a godsend for my 15 year old kitty with moderate arthritis. I was really resistant at first because it cost $92 per shot and they have to be given monthly. I used gabapentin at first. It worked, but Solensia works *much* better. When I saw the improvement in my kitty after just 2 shots I couldn't justify going back to gabapentin. It's like she was 10 years younger.

Yeah. And it's good when a cat is being expressive. It's a show that they're mentally there, physically ok enough to expend the energy to be chaotic and express their needs. After owning a very special cat, I've come to have a different perspective of them when they don't like something and may scratch, bite, growl, hiss etc. It's them telling you they don't like something and it's a good sign of their growth, personality and overall health. It was stressful for him, but I was happy that the old man's still got his sass. When they lose it, it's normally a sign that they're reaching their time to cross the rainbow bridge. Usually. If it's old age. They have emotions just like us, and it's good to express them. It shows that he's still kicking very well ❤

My cat passed away earlier this year at 16. Thank you for doing a groom for this older cat, and sticking it out even though you said you'd normally send one home that growled that much! I wish I had seen this a year before, or even earlier. The last six months of his life, he stopped being able to clean himself fully, just like you said. He thankfully didn't get matted, but his legs were constantly dirty. I tried my best to keep him clean, but I'd never given him a bath and I didn't particularly know what I was doing, so it was honestly more spot checks and getting the litter out before his kitty timer was up. One unfortunate thing is not all groomers do cats...in fact there's almost no groomers in my area that will do cats at all. I'd found one, but they never responded to any of my calls so I honestly don't know what was up with them. Maybe they'd gone out of business or something. I'm sure the owners really appreciated you helping out and giving advice; taking care of an old cat is hard as hell. And even if Ninja didn't admit it, I'm sure he felt better as well

She would actually do this. Unfortunately, she never learned to turn off the water.

Both of my cats did that, although Oliver at 18 lbs. of solid muscle, had trouble fitting into the bathroom sink.

I always thought my cat was the only one to sit under the faucet, she loved the kitchen sink, would look out the window while sunning her self 😊😊

Ok people out there with all your questioning….professionals project a vibe that is different than the owner. When the owner does it, you communicate your anxiety and intimate feelings to your pet who can read you like a book. A skilled pro’s whole demeanour radiates calm, controlled, secure handling and the animal reacts differently. Pretend you have to give a needle to your own child. And then compare that to an experienced health professional. So respect is the name of the game.

So true. Plus anxiety from leaning over a tub feeling that back and knee pain while preventing them from jump out 😂 And if it helps anyone, I learned that closing the shower curtain behind you helped prevent most of my 2 cats' jumping attempts.

For sure. Tho, when you do have to stick a needle in your pet on the regular, you learn how to be professional about it. I thought I was going to faint the first time I gave my current special needs pet a shot (partly b/c she'd had bad drug reactions before) and now it's just a normal part of our week. But yes, people should respect and aim to emulate rather than fretting so much.

I have had to give subs fluids to three of my babies. It gets easier the more you do it. And the reward of your little ones feeling better is huge. I can tell you a little story. I broke my leg a few years ago and had surgery on it the next day. I had to have twice daily injections of a blood thinner to prevent clots for 2 weeks. I was told to inject myself in the stomach...WAIT, WHAT??? So, my sweet 45 year old son volunteered to do the injections in the back of my arm. The thing is, he faints at the sight of blood!❤ He managed through both weeks and only saw a drop of blood twice. I am pretty plump so lots of fat tissue there. My point is, you do what is necessary.

My senior cat crossed the rainbow bridge at 20 about 2 months ago, and she had trouble grooming starting around 17 years old. She also had arthritis, a heart murmur, and hypertension, so I didn't want to stress her out even more taking her to a groomer. Your videos helped me to figure out how to groom her at home in the last few years to keep her comfortable and not cause her too much stress. Thank you for taking on difficult and senior cats. They need it and deserve it! ❤

Cats really are absolutely nothing like dogs. They have completely different behaviour and responses to similar things. A lot less patient, for one, haha. They're both great companions, just very different.

Good example is Dogs are like having an extroverted best friend, Cats are like having an INTROverted best friend :) Dogs are playful and want to be around you always no matter what and are in great moods, Cats will cuddle and keep you company for a certain period then go off on their own to recharge and take care of themselves and also tend to switch moods more. Both pets have different things to offer

All the dandruff 😢 my torti had that in her late teens as well. Seems like a possible early sign they're not grooming the same as they once did. I'm somehow always amazed that such a small animal can produce SO MUCH shed!

Seeing Ninja is like seeing my 16 yr old baby, Faith. Sadly i had to help her cross the 🌈 bridge three weeks ago tomorrow after she suddenly quit eatig, drinking or using her box. They could have mopped the clinic floors with the buckets full of tears i cried that day. Fly free swetheart, mama loves you and wishes you were here. See you again some happy day

He has respiratory issues as well, doesn't he? I wonder if it would help calm down cats with arthritis if you would put a pillow or mat or something else soft and warm on the table. There are ones that can be easily cleaned. I had a special mattresslike pillow for my cat with severe arthritis and he loved that so much. Made him feel a lot better.

What a great video! As soon as I saw all that dander I knew that poor old man needed your touch. You’ve very much inspired me to look into learning to groom cats - spicy cats are my specialty as far as cat rescue and ownership, and I know there’s a large shortage of cat groomers (especially when it comes to the mean ones!) Thank you for all you do for the pets ❤

I started bathing my cats early this year, blow-dryer is too much for them though. For at least the first bath (even if they don't hiss or scratch/bite) wear THICK long sleeves, long pants, and something to cover your neck. When cats try to escape they'll cling to anything, including your face and neck. Speaking from experience 😅

I've found that Tangle Teezer brushes are great for regular grooming. They have soft bristles so they're less likely to snag on scabs or irritate dry skin, and cats seem to really enjoy being brushed with them.
