I find it interesting how the helmet lights are actually a texture on his face, rather than actual lighting within the helmet. Makes sense, tbh, a texture would be far more performance friendly than actual lighting, and in this instance, it's indistinguishable, under normal circumstances.

This looks better than I thought it would. I was half expecting just eyes and maybe a top lip with the rest of him being either not there or ps2 graphics. Yeah the lighting's kinda jank but that's the least of the issues that should be. The fact there's facial animations that exist under the helmet is fascinating to me. They could have just left it at his eyes, but they actually made his lip curl, and when the Marauder appeared, he actually smirked a bit. Maybe it's because that medieval armor skin has a helmet that has slightly more 'face' beneath it so it needed to actually have the face do something? Very neat.

Thank you for this! I've been waiting for someone to show us Slayer's facial expressions during the cutscenes. I knew his face moved from the small bits you can see through the mask. I'm pleasantly surprised at the smug smile he has when tossing Samuel through the portal. Very satisfying. Honestly, if the Slayer never had his helmet on to begin with, nothing would've changed. All other video game characters have these emotions and expressions that make the player feel disconnected. But every time you play Doom, you're angry at everything; and from seeing this, the Slayer's face shows two emotions and expressions: Angry and angrier.

I love how literally everyone around him is constantly giving up, or giving in to temptation or fear even his fellow sentinel's. Meanwhile his will and demeanor is so unbreakable he rarely if ever says anything. He is so confident in his purpose that he'd rather live with action rather than waste time with words of doubt and cowardice.

What I love about his eyes are how they're more than just angry. There's a single-minded derangement in them that speaks about his journey. The sole survivor of Doom, the grinning lunatic of Doom 2, the fractured man sent out alone in Doom 64. The unknown time spent in Hell before and after becoming the Doom Slayer. It seems as if the only two thoughts he ever has are "Daisy's dead" and "Rip and Tear". A thinking man might have contemplated the Khan Maykr's offer, may have shivered at the thought the Hell Priests' revenge, and would have fallen in terror before the Icon Of Sin. Doomguy is a force of nature. An unavoidable eventuality, a constant variable in an unpredictable future. The Khan Maykr feared his coming before he existed and even with her unlimited power she was incapable of stopping him.

I LOVE what they did with Doomguy in this game. How they actually animated a face behind that helmet, but only ever let you catch little glimpses of it. It lets the Slayer retain his "unstoppable force of nature" vibe while humanizing him _just_ enough to make him feel like a character you can empathize with, and not a golem in power armour. You can SEE the burning hatred in those eyes. EDIT: You can tell they optimized for only those few glimpses, because of how... dumb his head looks without anything partially obscuring it.
