I was thinking on making my own mix, growing as much as I can to save more. (Will add * to planned to grow fpr added savings) Main Ingredients (base) dry corn* Rolled oats A dried fruit* (raisin, mango, etc.) A crushed insect* (meal worms or crickets.) Added food sources a weekly feeding of homegrown leafy greens, beans, lettuce, spinach, kale, etc. If possible the monthly vegetable from my garden, pumpkin, carrot, or sweet potato. This is my intended quail feed. Opinions?
@TheWisendorf
@TheWisendorf 5 жыл бұрын
The game bird grower is great till they start laying then you will start getting soft shells. If you like the game bird feed high protein then consider calcium addition .You can up that by adding tums or rolaids in there water.My birds I changed to hen layer wich worked great but after awhile there plumage began to suffer ,dull looking.So now I mix it with the high protein that I used for growth and plumage . My birds must be southerners because they really like left over steamed rice and grits,when I gather my eggs if i find one with a crack or something,I go ahead and finish cracking it on top of there feed tray. They will almost fight to get it. Good show Coturnix Corner.

The layer mash is 9.99 for 50 pounds and the soy meal is 12.99 for 50 pounds at my rural king in Kentucky. Thank you for your time and attention! I have started raising quail for my young daughter to teach her economics. I have 16 quail about 5-6 weeks old. I just bought your two recommended feeds (startena and layena). The layena is in pellet form. Do I grind them up or something? The pellets are considerably bigger than the crumbles I have been feeding them. Any help with this would be great as grinding 50lbs of feed will take more time for my quail duties. Thank you!

I've heard also that medicated feed causes sterility in males, although I know a local breeder who feeds all his chicks medicated feed until they are 8 weeks old and he says he's never had a problem with fertile males. If you can find, or may have your feed store order in non-medicated feed I would go that route, but if all else fails I don't think the medicated will hurt your production. Thanks for the comment

They literally don't sell any types of game bird feed down where I live so I actually feed my quail a mixture of Dove feed, chicken layer feed, and I'll break my chickens eggshells and teeny tiny pieces and give it to my quail separately in a bowl if they want it. To meet their protein requirements I actually give them supplements as well as a lot of dried bugs, dose this sound ok? (I have two 6 month old Quail hens as pets)

Hmm. So, you would use the starter feed for a little while, then add the layer feed when they are old enough? Also, what do you mean by part? Like a serving size/cup? Also, is it really OK to keep giving them starter mix when they are adults?
@CoturnixCorner

Yes, I start my birds on a 30% protein feed until they start laying, then I'll mix a layer formula to feed while they are in production. Part just means equal parts of each feed. Example: 1 cup, 1 gallon ect. You can feed starter when they are adults, but the starter is more expensive and they really don't need that much protein.

Most feed stores carry a chick starter with 24% + protein. Or ask if they can order it in for you. If you can't find a feed with higher protein levels you can grind up dry cat food and mix with the feed. Cat food has approximately 30% protein.

Great info. I give my birds layer feed then they start to have bleeding within internal haemorrhage and they died.

Cheers for this, I been tryin to find out about "bobwhite quail flight pen plans" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Have you heard people talk about - Eeyila Rudimentary Expediency - (Have a quick look on google cant remember the place now ) ? It is a good exclusive product for discovering how to raise healthy and fertile quail minus the hard work. Ive heard some incredible things about it and my m8 got amazing results with it.

I don't recommend .mixing feed that way. It's not the same as feeding one feed that has the proper nutritional values some quail will eat some layer some will eat both and some will eat starter so the birds won't be getting the same ration You are much better off feeding a ration that has everything they need in one feed.Feed is very close to the most important thing when raising any Gamebird.I buy Quality feed so I have Quality birds and eggs and I charge my customers accordingly and have had no complaints. Not saying my way is the only way just know it's the right thing for my birds and my customers.
