Great info as always. I know that I may be controversial but I feed 30% protein 1.5% to 2% game bird starter to all of my birds. I don't bother switching them to a breeder feed. It works well for me but, like you said, I am not producing birds for sale or egg sales, just meat and eggs.
@MyshireFarm3 жыл бұрын
Yeah I was going to bring that up on Sunday I think that is a great point
@kennethharper82292 жыл бұрын
That 30% starter is totally acceptable for coturnix from hatch to dispatch, and anywhere in between. Not sure why it's so controversial, but agree that it is. If one buys feed in quantities less than 1000# a month or more. There is no reason to switch feed on coturnix.

Kalmbach is a great feed! The only issue I had was getting fresh product from my supplier. The feed bags were always old so I had to change. Glad they are making it fresh for you! I think that the freshness of the feed plays just as much a part in the feed as the percentages.

I just ordered my eggs from y'all/waiting for delivery. Got the incubator and template yesterday and now looking for food locally. Very difficult so I'm hoping to find it online - only ordered 25, was going for 50 since it's 50% hatch rate but the incubator/template will only hold 45 eggs. Anyway this is what I heard you say: 1st 8 weeks of life Starter grower 0 to 8 weeks old. 25 to 32% proteinstarter crumble, ideal but pellet ok maybe big, do not blend, do not fine blend crude fat - 2.5 to 3.5%crude fiber - no min, max 8% do not go over Calcium 0.75% to 2.0% Phosphorus 0.5 to 1.% Salt - NaCl 0.25 and 1% Beginning of week 8 to the end of week 8 Feed twice a day: first with Starter crumble and 2nd time with layer/breeder feed Layer Breeder crumble Protein 17% to 23% 2.5 and 3.5% crude fatfiber not over 8% max calcium min 2 to 3.5 % Phosphate lower 0.4 and 0.7% NaCL Salt - 0.1 and 0.8% Does this mean that as of week 9 and the rest of their life - they just stay on the Layer/Breeder crumble?

Great job. Do you have a problem with grinding the empty egg shells and refeeding to the breeder layer quail?
@cathalmire Жыл бұрын
Hi zak i ran out of layer pellets and didn't get it over the weekend so i cud only get chicken layer pellets so i grinded it up. Now that I have the quail layer pellets can i mix it with the chicken feed to get a similar nutrition level? Also noticed how much cheaper chicken feed 25kg was compared to quail feed 14kg.
@MyshireFarm Жыл бұрын
I never recommend grinding any feed ever. I would get an all purpose layer feed crumble

@@MyshireFarm ok cheers, i grinding it a bit cus i didn't think the quail would be able to eat the pellets as the are bit bigger.

I’ve always heard the 25-30% protein the whole time? Do you know why the recommended dropping it? I don’t have very many quail at the moment, so I’m not sure it would be worth it to constantly try to switch.
@MyshireFarm2 жыл бұрын
If it works then stick with it but the price of feed will go down with less protein

I’d also like to know what differences are needed in different climates. I personally live in a very hot desert climate. I feel our animals need more salt and more water.
@debraberg17632 жыл бұрын
Cortenix quail do fine in the heat. They are desert birds. A little fan not blowing directly on them and shade should be all that they need.
@shannonrobinson2622 жыл бұрын
I live in central California. We get to 114f in summer and it’s hot for several weeks. Our birds are all shaded and positioned where the breezes move their air to keep them a bit more comfortable. We give loads of fresh water daily and need a small supplement of calcium( ground limestone) in summer as the egg shell get a bit thinner in 5he Joshua+computer ream heat. Just do not let them run out of water…ever!

@@MyshireFarm I do it for my outdoor chicken & ducks, but I dump on ground once daily. The biggest reason I'm hesitant with trying with the quail is the clean up process. Because it gets gross in containers over a few hours. Lol

@michellerushing43113 жыл бұрын
I'm very interested in why the transition from starter to layer is done in two separate feedings as opposed to mixing.
@Rattlerjake13 жыл бұрын
Because the birds are able to choose which feed they need. I feed poultry layer, wild bird seed, and finely cracked corn, all in separate feeders. Each day when I check the feed levels I can tell what their needs were for the previous day. I get a much better idea of their needs based on climate conditions. Birds in cooler weather feed more on carbs (like corn) than on higher protein feeds. When you mix two types of poultry pellets that look alike, the birds cannot tell the difference and may be getting more protein than they need.

I have added quail to my family food plan about a year ago and haven’t been able to find feed with enough calcium. Have problem with soft shells and egg binding that I have read can be caused by low calcium. They alway have free choice oyster shell grit. What else do you suggest to supplement calcium.
@VeysPlace3 жыл бұрын
some veggies they like are high in calcium as well. Broccoli and kale. you can also use their shells. But if they are new layers, it is common to get a soft shell once in a while.
@pinocolada42543 жыл бұрын
Like said above, crushed oistershells dit chickens are an option. It is wat to coarse as it is. I Don't know were you'r ad, i'm in the Netherlands. Here i can buy really fine crushed shells for small birds. Regular pet stores and even grocery stores sell it here. Feed mills and stores comparable to, lets say, tractor supply, do not always have it.
@debraberg17632 жыл бұрын
A smaller oyster shell is available for smaller birds at the pet store. Use a complete game bird feed from a big company that you can trace. These are supposed to have everything that the quail need.
