Protesters try (and fail) to silence David Seymour at Waitangi

ACT Leader David Seymour addresses the powhiri on the Waitangi Treaty Grounds, 2025. A protester removes David's microphone, but that doesn't stop him from getting across his message: the Treaty "partnership" isn't working, and identity politics won't solve our shared problems. The text of this speech is available at www.act.org.nz/powhiri_address

We end up year after year after year of putting up with this ugliness. To me (as a kiwi-European) I think Waitangi is a day of reflection. You're right it is hard to see it as a day of celebration, but only because of how its original spirit of partnership has been abused. I don't see how you can claim the misery of Maori isn't caused by the theft of their lands and erasure of their culture but through their own doing. I think anyone who has a basic knowledge of how the treaty came about and our settler history could see that. Equity creates Equality.

@@WilliamGarden-v9z Equity has become a fashionable woke word. Democratic political system allows for a more civilised society but it does not nor should it seek to be our mother. That would be communism. Some of us do better than others and we all have various aptitudes, talents & strengths. Nature is not equatable. British colonisation was the result of a technologicaly superior civilisation out performing the primitive one. Maori society was not equatable it was hierarchal. If you were not useful or powerful you were most likely a slave or eaten. Life was brutal. The development of AI will no doubt be like the musket and we will see a repeat of colonisation from whoever becomes the new great AI power. Humane nature does not change.

Why do you need a made up special day, can't you go out & celebrate a New Zealand day when you want or like, what's holding you back from having your own special New Zealand, day.

@@MrTengaereno one in the entire world needs a day, special or not, humans make it up as we go along.. however new zealand day is a suggestion that is clearly about inclusivity and unification of all members of our society, all unique individuals under one nation..

@@de-nz4jp you can't have inclusivity when you have people who don't feel included in that inclusivity. Giving or having a special name for a day of the year will never change that.

Yep next election will be a huge shock for winston and luxon. Wonder if ACT may become a major party. Just depends if he meddles with other things. The school lunches debacle will cost him, unless he backtracks and puts it back how it was.

Government funding to Waitangi must cease until Maori behavior becomes civil. Tribal Sovereignty creates a racialized society, APARTHIED. Liberal Democracy allows New Zealanders the freedom to be different.

Totally correct. But the lunatics have taken over the asylum so tikanga only applies when it suits them. A very shameful state of affairs. I was so embarrased to be a maori new zealander today.... please accept my apologies Mr Seymour. This is not what decent maori stand for........kia kaha
