I worked at an asylum processing center in NYC. I can tell you that most asylum seekers are actually economic migrants. To be seeking asylum, you need to prove that the (1) government is persecuting you OR (2) the government cannot stop a group from persucuting you because of a protected class (think race, ethnicity, religion, sexuality). The vast majority of people do not qualify, but because their court dates are YEARS out, they are often given work authorization in the meantime. That's how the system works.
