I own both of these. Bought them, as a teenager, back in the 70s, still use them. Great review, thanks. (The 1960s-through 1980s was a great time for all kinds of American made tools.)

I have a 10" pair of J H Williams that belong to my granddad bought back in the late 1960's that has seen very little use. Still consider them brand new. Their buried somewhere in my tool collections. Thanks for sharing

That sounds like a great heirloom tool!

I find 10" slip joint pliers to be the most all-around useful. You can really get a grip on something better than with a 6" or 8" version.

They really are the best all-around size!

I found a pair of these at a thrift store for like 2 bucks. Not sure if they are the diamond kind but definitely 10 inch proto slip joints. Nice big set of pliers, my dad hates em, calls them “finger pinchers”

Proto acquired the Challenger name after the bought Penens Corporation.

I have more CT branded slip joint pliers than any, including my dad's 10" black oxide finished set from WW2. He called all slip joint pliers, CT Pliers. Kind of like Crescent Wrenches.

I have no idea why I like slip-joint pliers so much. I've got quite a few pairs from 6"-10", made in the USA and Japan. My favorites are probably the 10" USA made SK (by Wilde). I also really like the 90 degree-head 8" IPS slip-joints made in Japan. I like the built-in spring action on those, and the jaws fit up to over 40 mm.

I love those 90-degree-head slip-joints, they’re so handy!

Used Proto tools in general are much more well used when bought second hand they were the choice of many logging and heavy duty mechanics in the Pacific northwest but I believe snapon has made big gains for many years.

You're right, they're a great choice for logging and heavy duty work!

Mr Maximus, Generally speaking, production of professional pliers has slipped right out of the USA. 🤨

The current offerings are made by WILDE, and they offer the flush fasteners too.
