ℹ️ What was more of a pleasant surprise is the fact that both providers are independently audited and seem to be quite proud of that. Proton Pass, despite being this "young," has already undergone one Cure53 security audit. 1Password, on the other hand, well, 1Password has a whole webpage dedicated JUST to listing all their independent audits, including their app for Windows and Mac. Quite impressive.

✅ Moving on, both Proton Pass and 1Password use Vaults. Just like 1Password, Proton Pass allows you to store various different info in specific vaults. Personally, vaults always help me stay organized and easily share passwords with colleagues. But Proton Pass lacks the sharing part of Vaults. In fact, there is currently no secure way to share anything with Proton Pass. There are very few customization options or settings you can change in general.

ℹ️ Proton Pass offers one standard premium plan and one "unlimited" option. However, due note that this Unlimited plan doesn't give you any benefits for Proton Pass itself. It's just a subscription to ALL Proton services. So we can just say there is one Proton Pass plan. In contrast, 1Password offers plans for individuals, families, and businesses.
ℹ️ And 1Password doesn't just offer more, it offers more at a cheaper price point. Proton Pass monthly plan costs under $5 a month, and 1Password asks for around $3 a month. What's better, at least for me, is that every 1Password plan comes with 1GB of encrypted storage space and the previously mentioned extra features.

✅ Look, overall, I think ProtonPass controls are OK. It's definitely not something BAD, but when switching back to 1Password, the difference is very noticeable. One big reason is that Proton Pass is only available for Android, iOS, and browsers. There's no Windows or Mac app yet, and personally, I really like doing most of my work through the native app, like 1Password, which is available for all major operating systems, mobile, and browsers.

Conclusion
Okay, which is the best password manager? If you're a Proton fan or working with its other tools, Proton Pass will be a great addition. It has strong security and is simple to use. However, currently, it lacks many life improvements and optimizations that 1Password has. I mean, for a regular user, 1Password will beat out ProtonPass any day of the week…

I really dont get how so many say "proton is missing features" - I mean isnt it just the dark web scan and sharing abilities? The first is really nice, and Id love proton to add this, but sharing isnt really a deal breaker is it?

You say Proton Pass costs under $5/month, while showing it's $3.99 while billed annually, but then you say 1Password around $3/month ($2.99). You're clearly trying to make Proton sound more expensive than it is. Also, if you choose the 2-year option, Proton Pass is the same $2.99 as 1Password. Also, you say Proton Pass for a dollar is probably the best password manager deal out there. You must have forgotten Bitwarden, which is $10/year ($0.83/month) for the premium version, even though the free option is very usable. Finally, you say you wouldn't pay $5 for a product this bare. Again, it's $3.99 per month when billed annually, and $2.99 per month when billed every 2 years. Much like in your comparison between 1Password and Bitwarden that was filled with inaccuracies, it seems you are shilling for the company that provides you an affiliate link.

Proton Pass’s code underwent a security audit by the German security firm Cure53(new window) throughout May and June. It is also open source so anybody can put eyes on it. The biggest advantage to the paid Proton Pass IMHO is the unlimited aliasing. Proton owns SimpleLogin, and this is great for privacy. Without the unlimited aliasing, I'd go with Bitwarden, which has a terrific free version, and the premium version is only $10/yr. Since I have Proton Visionary, I already get the unlimited aliasing, so I'm sticking with Bitwarden anyway (even though Proton Pass is included).
