Proton Pass is finally available to the public - Proton's new password manager. How does it compare to Bitwarden, KeePass, 1Password, and other established password managers in the space? Today I share my review of Proton Pass!

I don’t mind half baked stuff so long as they release upgrades consistently or provide a road map. This way I can learn the new features with everyone else. But as of now I like keeping my stuff separate I just wished they gave us the family plans on separate plans like the email rather than only the ultimate. Cuz I use Synology drive, IVPN and 1 pass and I like how they work and haven’t been convinced by anything else yet.

I agree that Pass is still trying to find its edge on the market, and they have to do it fast or lose relevance. Interestingly, Pass was announced around the same time that passkey was being rolled out by multiple platforms (i.e. Google, 1Password). I think Proton got caught off-guard by the market shift, but this is a great opportunity for them to enter the passkey space and carve out an edge ASAP.

This is a really interesting product. I am glad Proton is slowly starting to integrate their suite to the product line. I will be interested to see how this--and the Proton suite in general--will evolve within the next 1-2 years. Also, I love the transparency you have with the community on here. Thank you for that! Keep up the great work!

Henry, as usual great video. I have 1Password but I also have Proton Unlimited but I am not sure about Proton Pass. 1Password is so far ahead of the game and something I use a lot is the option to add a file (like a document) to a vault and there is no option for that in Proton Pass ...... Also, with Proton, it take years to get anything done. I am even thinking of leaving them all together but i like the fact that they are open source and have end to end encryption. If i get a paid email service, VPN, Cloud storage separately, its about the same price as Proton Unlimited

I am a paid subscriber of Proton and even if Pass was better than competition I would not use it. Why: If for any reason I lost access to my Proton account I would lose my passwords, my main email account, my main calendar app and my backup cloud storage. I don't want to put all my eggs in the same basket. It's not worth it just to save a couple of bucks a month. But that's just my opinion

I'm going off Proton. I'm not surprised they've released another 'bare bones' product, that seems to be their MO. They keep releasing inadequate software without polishing current products properly. If I was to start again I'm not sure I'd pick Proton, Drive is useless, contacts don't integrate properly and the VPN is on the slow side.

Thanks for a highly informative review :-) My question on Proton Pass is a generic one with all password managers: What if a compromise/weakness is found in a password manager? Wouldn't *all* my passwords be exposed? Wouldn't the use of a password manager thus amount to throwing all my eggs in one basket? It is really encouraging that it is open source and must obey Swiss privacy and all, but in the long run, all software will eventually get exposed. Any comments please?

A Proton app is barebones and lack basic features? *_WHAAT?!_* _No..._ ...ok, I'm done being a dick. But, you know... it's kinda true. :| I'm getting kind of annoyed with the Proton ecosystem. Because the more they add to it, the more what still hasn't been added sticks out. It's great that Proton is expanding and so on, but everything but Mail feels incomplete. And therefore, the ecosystem feels half-baked. _Because it is._ People keep asking about it, I know, but again: Where are the Proton Drive desktop apps, Proton?! Come on! ;-;

A good deal is going: proton pass offers 80%-off, on the 1 or 2 year plans. That includes unlimited email alias cration for 12 and 24 months (monthly 1 USD/EUR/CHF)... that is now the cheapest way for unlimited aliases compared to simplelogin (30/year [20 at blackfriday]), or anonaddy (pro, 3 per month).

People complain a lot about the "all eggs in one basket" but let's not forget we are minority here, most people would rather have a whole ecosystem than 20 different services and subscriptions, and for the record, I would rather have them in privacy and secure ecosystem than Google's, Microsoft's and other.
@MaybeTiberius
@MaybeTiberius Жыл бұрын
@@jeremybyte i give you that, but you have to remember one thing here. Privacy aside, google and microsoft ecosystems simply WORK. protons suite and drives and whatnot do not. and the ''most people'' you are talking about here dont even know proton exists. because those MOST people want something convenient that works therefore google/apple/microsoft. most people dont care about privacy so most people you refer to dont bother to set new stuff up to begin with. thats how most people are. and the others use proton mail but dont need a half baked suite. so now tell me: what would be the more logical step here: 1. fix and make the existing stuff better for the allready customers to enjoy and therefor also bring in new people in their family because they tell them about it. or 2. Try do build something half baked for a target audience that does not care about privacy anyways. im sorry, i dont like google or microsoft but you simply cannot compete with them on their own ground with suites and alike.

Its equivalent to being out in the ocean and not being able to drink the water. Privacy and security brings us to Proton. It is the utility that can keep us or lose us. Quite frankly I don't give a damn about Proton Pass. I'm tired of waiting for Proton to rollout crucial missing features to their core Mail product. I get that developing privacy-centric solutions is complicated but if you have the resources to rollout VPN, Calendar, Drive, purchase & integrate SimpleLogin, and now Pass there is literally no excuse for allowing Proton Mail to wallow in mediocrity for this long. I've been a paying subscriber to Proton Mail since its earliest days but I'm growing tired of waiting for them to do the bare minimum. Calendar, Drive and Pass all represent the bare minimum of what you expect in those product categories. Proton can only trade on the "privacy-centric" thing for so long before people tire of constantly waiting for basic features. Proton Bridge saves Proton Mail from many of its inadequacies. Calendar, Drive and Pass have no such a crutch. Rolling out Proton Drive, without sync clients, on every platform, borders on incompetence. I'm beyond frustrated with Proton.

i m still quite new with proton mail and in the transition phase of moving everything over from like 15+ years but i m allready upset about that. i m in here for a mail provider. i can see mail provider and could storage work together, thats a handy thing also for work. but it doesnt even work. proton drive is pretty much unusable, proton calander is whatever. everything besides mail is an early access unfinished beta test.. and instead of fixing that stuff first they allready introduce something else NOONE asked for? its upright stupid and i did not leave google just to jump into a new ecosystem or suite. i dont want or need that and its pointless. 99% of companies use microsoft office as a suite anyways so you have to somewhat adapt to that. i cant go to my boss and say: oh yeah but can i use this open scource suite noone knows about instead? NO i cant... i have to use that stuff because thats what all companies are set up for. i just want a secure and nice email provider and something to store some stuff online thats not google or microsoft. thats it... i dont want a new ecosystem.

@@MaybeTiberius Well, if you wanna avoid Proton Mail you still have a lot of other secure options for personal use. This is really dumb and concerning. Look at what Thunderbird is doing in contrast, they recently asked the community for ideas on how they could integrate their email client with LibreOffice to make their client more useful. Rather than reinventing what’s already good and well established they communicated with the community and started to work with other open source projects. Proton is giving me more and more corporate vibes each day. We oughta be weary.

Too many missing features. No family accounts, no sharing, no desktop app, no web app, no passkeys, no 2fa scanner, no copying items, no custom fields, no item history. They shouldn't have released it at this stage. I doubt they will enable all these features any time soon, if ever. 1password has all these features and with the family account, it's about the same price as Proton Pass per person. The price for Proton Pass is low but only until end of July. Why would anyone buy it at the regular price? 1password is closed-source but it wouldn't be used by major corporations if it wasn't properly audited.

Not sure why you rarely, if ever, mention NordPass. Putting that aside, I use Protonmail and their VPN. Not sure I want to use another of their products since it means if you lose one you'll lose them all. Not sure I see the lack of a desktop app as a down side. It simply cuts down on bloat. It does probably mean that it's cloud only though, which would've been a valid aspect to mention.

Proton pass is useless, i had it on my premium account, set it all up and once i downgraded to the free account Proton pass locked me out of my 2fa accounts?? Now i cant even log into my Proton account to upgrade. Stick with Bitwarden or 1Password

This means you either have your passwords all written down on paper which can easily be lost or damaged, saving them to a file on your desktop (hopefully encrypted), or using passwords that you can remember (hopefully none are identical). With the manager it can create very complex passwords, locked under encryption, a master pass and 2fa, and easily switch between systems when required. The only down side to most of them is that they're often cloud storage vs local, but that's also the factor that makes going between systems easier.

thats simply not true. if you setup and use something like bitwarden correctly, it is way more secure. 1. you can set it up in a way neither you nor your password manager knows the full password by first letting bitwarden create a password and save and then you add like a number pincode onto that password in your account that only you know so when bitwarden autofills, you cannot login because you need to manually add your pincode ontop of it. and if someone would breach your masterpassword they still cannot login into anything and you have time to act. its basicly an analogue offline version of 2fa ontop of 2fa 2. plus 2fa or a physical 2fa key like yubikey 3. plus alias accounts through simplelogin for example so you can have a different email for basicly everything and never expose your real data to anyone. tell me: how do you manage that online with just a piece of paper? and how do you encrypt that piece of paper? do you have a big safe at home where another safe is in in case that safe gets stolen and every time you wanna log in spotify or your email account or whatever you go downstairs opening 2 safe's and typing a 20 ish long random password into your pc and locking your safe again?
